Command & Conquer packaging 12 games in one box set
Command & Conquer was one of the first great Real Time
Strategy games. Born out of Westwood's experience adapting Dune II into a computer game, the Command &
Conquer series has flourished through a series of amazing (and not so amazing) titles. In honor of the series'
10th anniversary, EA is releasing Command & Conquer: The First Decade.
The First Decade is about as comprehensive as one can get in a box set, featuring all 12 games and
expansions, from the original Command & Conquer and the glorious Red Alert, to the poorly
thought-out Sole Survivor and black sheep of the series, Generals. The box set will also feature a
bonus DVD with a video interview of Command & Conquer creator (and Westwood founder) Louis Castle. There is also a
chance to be featured on the DVD if you submit a video proving your "undying devotion to the C&C
series."
No word on when the compilation will be released, but the suggested retail price is a meager $40. For all that
multiplayer glory (or, for just the Red Alert series), that is an unbeatable deal. What is your favorite
Command & Conquer memory?

The installation process. I can't remember a PC game where the install was so cool.
Anyone know if all these games will be XP compatible or just the old versions packaged up?

Once I played an epic 3 hour game of the original c&c over a modem with my brother. We played forever until I built enough for a final blitz- using all my resources and units. He sacrificed his units, packed up his MCV and drove away. That SOB actually rebuilt (in an area of the map with some resources) and came back to win. bastage.

The question is, will the repackaged games work on XP? I had trouble installing my old C&C games on 98, much less XP.

Ah yes, Command & Conquer: Red Alert... the game that introduced me to the RTS genre.
Best moment ever? Using spies to infiltrate your enemy's base in six places in under one minute, immediately followed by a crippling air strike from your death swarm of 60 harriers to permanently cripple their power sources. Follow that up with a chronosphere worth of prism tanks and engineer-laden IFVs, and you've got yourself a party.
Overkill is bliss.

Generals is the black sheep? I thought the general concensus was that it was one of the best out of the series.
DarkHorse @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
The best part about Red Alert was the music to the intro. That crazy German/Russian beat with the sound of marching boots or something of that effect. A must buy

Generals a black sheep? Nuh-uh! It's quite possibly the best RTS of all time. The graphics and gameplay still hold up, even though the game is nearly four years old. Most games I play once and they sit on the shelf. Generals has earned a permanent spot on my PC. I still play it!
sn @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
someone needs to make combine flash with google maps to make an online RTS you play on satellite maps
command and conquer new york? i'd play it
Ross Miller @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Maybe black sheep was too harsh of a phrase; it was indeed a great game, but it just felt out of place in the Command & Conquer universe, having nothing to do with the story's lore whatsoever. It was fun to play, yes, (I'll admit I was not as excited about it as most people), but it just did not mix right in the Command & Conquer universe; it almost felt like it was added to the series just to garner more recognition from the press.

Yeah, I was wondering if there was some animosoty there for being the post-Westwood C&C.
I really enjoy Generals:Zero Hour and feel like it was a decent relaunch of the series more reflective of current events than the retro-Soviet stylings of previous C&Cs.
Ross Miller @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
It's a good game for the "next" decade - a starting over for Command & Conquer. But if you are going to celebrate the first 10 years, it's all about the Brotherhood of Nod and zapping those soldiers with the Tesla Coil.
Have you ever seen a Tesla Coil taken out by nothing but infantry? It's possible, and really funny.
James Emberton @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
I am thinking they meant to say that "Renegade" was the black sheep as it wasn't even an RTS. I believe it was a FPS if I am not mistaken. Generals was stellar and received great reviews at the time. Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth used the Generals engine.
Kristian @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
I'll get this if for nothing but Red Alert.
Speaking of which, my best memory is trapping the computer opponent's sole surviving infantry unit into his own base, then dropping a Nuke on it to kill it.
Jago @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Talk about milking an old franchise...you'd think EA is running out of original ideas and needs to make a quick buck...
...oh wait...they are doing that...lol
Chris K @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Best memory? I have a few!
In the original C&C where I learned the beauty of using the aircraft against helpless units like the harvester. It was even more fun when the CPU started escorting the harvester with infantry. They of course immediately died due to the radiation. :)
Also, building tons of power plants, then assaulting an enemy base with nothing more than Tesla Coils was loads of fun.
And funneling units through gates due to their poor AI was a laugh. They ran through the maze, only to be wiped out by artillery as they exited the maze in single-file.
Finally, what was that infantry unit that had a gun not much more powerful than an infantry rifle, but long range and DEADLY against armor/buildings? Tanya? Anyways, I would often load a bunch of APCs with this unit and sneak around back of the enemy base. You'd have to be careful to avoid flame tanks and the like, but you could decimate a base in a minute or two if you did it right. If nothing else you could destroy the construction yard before getting wiped out.
I wonder, are these games ALL playable on XP? Cause I would love to play the old C&C games again if they were completely compatible with my current system.
Devil's Advocate @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Good times..... Creating an army of invisible tanks, wiping out harvesters and then driving them to the back of the base, sending a "visible" convoy, wait for the defense to target in on those and then UH-OH.. point. set. match.
Gah @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
I think it would be pointless to release this without XP support. Clearly, EA may screw up franchises and games, but they are not that dumb to overlook that. I for one would buy this, it's a bargain for having 12 at least above average RTS, and early C&C games belong in Hall of Fame.
I do not consider Generals to be in the official C&C history. To me, C&C equals cheesy B-movie plot that is somewhat familiar yet fresh, and an engaging story told by FMVs, not to mention speedy combats with lots of options.
George @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
If I didn't already own every game in the C&C series, I'd be buying this.
Red Alert was by far the best of the series. RA2 was also enjoyable.
Personally, I found Generals to be a massive disappointment. Likewise with Renegade, although I wasn't expecting much from that.
If you want a modern-day version of Red Alert, look no further than Act of War. It's simply a fantastic game, and probably a good example of what Generals should have been.
K_G @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
"No word on when the compilation will be released..."
Ummm, in the 7th line press release of the piece it says it coming out in Feb 2006.
Austin @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Oh come on, you people know Generals did NOT feel like a Command and Conquer game at all. I wouldn't go so far as to say black sheep, but it's close. Renegade, on the other hand...
Anyway, I could never get over the live action cut scenes in the first Red Alert game. Embarrassing as they might be, they hold a special place in my gaming heart.
