London-based
Golden Joystick Awards announced their trophy winners today, and the
results are only partially inaccurate. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was the big winner with 5 awards, including best
hero, villain, soundtrack, PlayStation 2 game, and all around "Ultimate Game of 2005." Some other noteworthy awards
went to Nintendo for Publisher of the Year and Play.com for Retailer of the Year.
The two minor discrepancies with the awards have to do with the Best Film-Based Game and the One to Watch for Xmas
awards. The former was given to Resident Evil 4, which is not based on a film (despite the existence of 2, almost 3,
movies with the same title), and the latter was given to The Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess. Link's upcoming
adventure was delayed until sometimes after March 31 of
next year, a fact that has been known since mid-August (hence, plenty of time for the Golden Joysticks to fix their
nominees, much less choose incorrect winners).
Despite this, the awards still hold more integrity that Spike TV's VGA's, which
nominated King Kong for an astounding 7 awards, even
though no one outside of Michel Ancel's entourage has played the full version. The Oscars would never nominate an
incomplete film, so why do video game awards seem so hell-bent on nominating future titles?
