Xbox 360 backward-compatible list released
We were expecting a backward-compatible announcement today since the
emulated Halo screenshots on 360 were released on
Wednesday, and MS has finally delivered a list of backward-compatible games as well as
a BC FAQ from Xbox CPV Todd Holmdahl.
In a sense, we've been waiting for this list for a few weeks now, but better
late than never, we say. And there's still time before the launch of the 360, so at least we know what's ready right
off the bat, without counting the inevitable additions to be made to the list.
At any rate, most of the heavy hitters appear to be there, but we noticed that neither Kingdom Under Fire or
Otogi title is listed as of yet. Splinter Cell's missing, too. Can anybody else find a favorite (or
not-so-favorite) title that's not currently up there? (Catwoman, Drake, Kabuki War-...
shudder.)

Efren]

I was also going to say, at least they are honest unlike sony who says fully backwards compatible, ya right.

all games that are compatible run in 720p or 1080i with full antilising
Sanosuke Sagara @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
All I can say is one nail already in the coffin. How can you release a system and not gaurantee compatability with all previous games, let alone only top-sellers? They're not even gauranteeing compatibility with NEW games. WtF? How can they market a system that can't play games currently being released? Also, How can they market a system and when games for thier own previous-gen system are still coming out? Most people will not want to have both xboxes, so this will definitely be a huge problem.
TheUndertow @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
Captain Obvious - take a hint and just buy the new one...no sense wasting resources on either side as it will only dissuade new product sales and take away time for more productive uses.

32 -
Steel Batallion would not work because the huge-ass controller has no where to go on the 360.

THANK YOU!

Some of you guys need to actually go to the website and read it before you post.
On all the games being in 720p:
Xbox.com: Will there be any benefits to playing original Xbox games on my Xbox 360 console?
Todd: Absolutely. One of the great things about gaming on Xbox 360 is the satisfaction of knowing that every game will be playable in high definition. We are now proud to reveal that this extends to the original Xbox games as well. Every original Xbox game will be upscaled to 720p and 1080i, and will take advantage of Xbox 360s anti-aliasing capabilities, delivering a picture that is clearer and crisper than anything available on Xbox.
On why games like catwoman are one there but games like SC and burnout are not:
Xbox.com: At E3, Microsoft said Xbox 360 would run the "top-selling Xbox games." What did you mean by that?
Todd: That's a fair question. We've been working hard to certify as many original Xbox games to work on Xbox 360 as possible. This process is a detailed procedure that we're committed to, but it means that not every game is going to be ready on day one.
Naturally we started with the games that have sold the best and the ones with a large Xbox Live following. We also worked on games we knew were important titles for this holiday, and we're proud to have made games like Half-Life 2 (Valve), Tony Hawks American Wasteland (Activision, Inc.), and Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (Konami Digital Entertainment) backward compatible.
As we focused on the top sellers, we discovered that many other games worked due to similarities in their technology. As an added benefit, games that share engines and technology have been in some cases easier to certify for backward compatibility and have made the launch lineup as a result.
Mark B @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
I have 70 games for my Xbox.
ONLY 20 of my games are on that list!! :(
What about my other 50 games??
To hell with you Microsoft!!
I'll wait for the PS3 and enjoy 99% compatibility, not to mention a better overall system.
HyperBear @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
Ya. Sony are a bunch of liars and PS3 sucks. I mean look at the facts :
1. A month ago, Sony said that it would release an online service that would kill the Live service and the selling of 360's .
A month later, they announce that they r too lazy to do it, so they're just goin to stay with the PS2 online system which SUCKED....
2. They said that PS3 will be backwards compatible with all games from PS1 and PS2.
Now they say that it wont work cause of Blu-Ray they r puttin in the PS3.
3. They said they will have a big launch in March 06 in the states with some of the biggest launch games of all time.
Now they say it wont launch in the states till Christmas 06 and only have like 10 games tops that r in development for the launch and only 2 of those titles have been confirmed as playable demos at E3 2006.
4. They said they have the top developer teams working on games that will blow the 360 right out of Earth.
Now they r losing dev. support and already 1 game that was supposed to be a ps3 title has been cancelled "Condemned : Criminal Origins".
Its simple folks, PS3 is just losing this war, and as far as im concerned its already Lost, thanks to the quick thinking and developing by Microsoft,Team Xbox,The Xbox 360,& All developer teams that r working on games for the 360. CONGRATS TO M$ AND XBOX 360!!!!!!!!!!!!
John @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
SERIOUSLY PEOPLE. READ THE DAMN FAQ BEFORE YOU GO POSTING ALL THIS NEGATIVE CRAP.
Like no new games being on the 360. If you read the FAQ on the link that was posted (I'll add it since you obviously missed it) you'll find that it clearly states they will be supporting NEW games for the original XBOX because they do not want to abandon the console. As far as all those fighting games that were listed, most of those are pretty popular titles, so I'm sure they are working on them as we speak, because if you noticed, they said they are still working on adding more games, and will continue to do so. Especially all those capcom vs. games. All those games probably have very similar technology, so i'm sure once one is cracked, the others won't be far behind.
So what if you favorite game isnt on the list. Odds are it will be soon enough. I dont understand why you guys are so upset if its not on there yet. The list will be updated again before launch next week, and will keep on getting updated afterwards, and besides...are you seriously going to get your 360 home and be sad because you can't play an old game on it first thing when you get it home? You'll have NEW games to play on the 360 to hold you over for a little while until the list grows. SO STOP WHINING. And to all future posts, please READ THE FAQ AT THE FOLLOWING LINK THAT WAS ALSO POSTED ABOVE. Odds are it answers a boatload of your questions.

Dan Choi: I have no problem with the question you have asked - it's a legitimate concern even I have. That's why I said you could've said both.
Its obvious NOW that the list is not just the top ten titles. However, as far as I know, BEFORE the list came out, most people thought it'd be the Halos and Fable and maybe a handful of other titles. The fact that it isn't deserves some mention.
Further, it WAS and IS obvious that not every game in our collection is on there. This was expected yet this is what is mainly harped on.
Ironically, you close out by thanking Nintendogal for support. I bet a lot of people put a lot of effort into making our favorite (and not so favorite) games BC on the 360. I bet they'd appreciate some acknowledgement of the fruit of their work. Especially since it exceeds what was being predicted.
Just my two cents - afterall thats what the comments section is for right? :-)
Dr. John @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
Just a few from my collection that I noticed were missing from the list (in addition to what's already been listed):
007: Everything or Nothing
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
NBA Street: Volume 3
Psychonauts
Hooligan @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
I have owned consoles since the 2600 and I have never wished that I could play games from my previous systems. I always bought, played and enjoyed the games on my new hardware more. The only game I currently play on XBOX is Winning Eleven 8, and it is not currently on the list. I love some of the comments you guys write though. "Another nail in the coffin...", what a joke! Why buy a new system if you still need to play you old games. Break out your wallet and buy some new games, or keep playing the old system. Again, if you are that concerned with old games, keep playing your XBOX! It can't play PS2 games, this teh sucks!

HyperBear:
You do realize you sound and look like an idiot when you base what you write on rumors, not facts? None of what you said is confirmed.
Oh wait, yes, condemned is not gonna be on PS3, but why should Sega bother in porting it when it's not coming out at least 5 months after the 360?
LOL, so now because that particular game was cancelled for PS3, almost EVERY SINGLE DEVELOPER has left PS3. Very good reasoning.
By the way, I forgot to mention, not one of the Silent Hills or Metal Gear Solids that came out for Xbox is on the list yet.
Art Guy @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
I am VERY impressed. When I saw this article I was expecting a list of 5-15 titles tops, not a giant list.
And then to read EVERY one of them will have HD support and AA!!! I honestly would buy a 360 just for that alone, they wouldn't even need to have 360 games.
I am very happy right now. =)
acer589 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM

Hell, lets break your BS down:
"1. A month ago, Sony said that it would release an online service that would kill the Live service and the selling of 360's .
A month later, they announce that they r too lazy to do it, so they're just goin to stay with the PS2 online system which SUCKED...."
This is a rumor, but then why would they keep making costumer surveys about online services?
"2. They said that PS3 will be backwards compatible with all games from PS1 and PS2.
Now they say that it wont work cause of Blu-Ray they r puttin in the PS3."
LOL, yeah right, so Sony would sacrifise that, and cripple the PS3 instantaneously only for the sake of Blu-ray...
"3. They said they will have a big launch in March 06 in the states with some of the biggest launch games of all time.
Now they say it wont launch in the states till Christmas 06 and only have like 10 games tops that r in development for the launch and only 2 of those titles have been confirmed as playable demos at E3 2006."
So not only do you manage to invent facts about the previously pressumed PS3 launch date, you even calculate how many games "like 10" lol will be out on PS3 launch window?
"4. They said they have the top developer teams working on games that will blow the 360 right out of Earth.
Now they r losing dev. support and already 1 game that was supposed to be a ps3 title has been cancelled "Condemned : Criminal Origins"."
As I said above, ONE game doesn't mean anything, specially when by the time PS3 comes out, it'll be an 6 months old game.
"Its simple folks, PS3 is just losing this war, and as far as im concerned its already Lost"
It hasn't even started, smartass.
"thanks to the quick thinking and developing by Microsoft,Team Xbox,The Xbox 360,& All developer teams that r working on games for the 360."
So not only you base yourself on rumors to declare PS3 dead, you say Microsoft thought "quickly" on the BC issue. In fact, they were too slow on this. They realized shit hit the fan when they didn't plan on Xbox 360 for being a BC system. Thank goodness for them they have the hard drive in case them or a developer screw up.
"CONGRATS TO M$ AND XBOX 360!!!!!!!!!!!!"
LETS ALL GET EXCITED AND SOUND LIKE WE ARE RETARDED YEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAYHHHHHHHHYYYYYY!!!
soupcommie @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
The list is about what I expected. I have 45 xbox games and only 11 are on it. I have 57 PS games and I hope they have better BC than this.
I doubt the list will grow much more because once people see it and decide to get a 360 or not, they probably won't check it again for a while.
Looks like they are abandoning the xbox to me. What else can they do? They have to move on. They are not going to support 2 consoles for very damn long.
Hopefully there are better games coming soon for the 360 than whats announced so far. I dont want to have to wait for PS3 to see some real next gen games.
SickNic @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
God, I was pretty impressed with that big of a compatibility list. I was only expecting like 12-15 games on launch day. Yet people still bitch and whine about it.
Thats why MS didn't give the list earlier, they wanted to spare themselves from listening to you guys bitching at them for months
Mark B @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
Well I am NOT IMPRESSED!! NOT AT ALL!!
ONLY 20 of my 70 games are on that list.
That leaves me with 50 games that so far are NOT PLAYABLE on the 360.
And to whoever said just buy some new games. LOL Do you mean 360 games? Are there any good ones worth buying yet?
caddieking @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM

Do I have to buy the expensive system just to get backward compatibility?

tiesto81 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
I have to agree with SickNic on this one. The fact that the system is backwards compatible to some extent is a luxury, not a god given right to gamers. Jesus - just because the ps2 did it doesn't mean every console afterwards needs to. Never did play any ps1 games on my ps2 anyways.
I am pretty damn impressed with how big the list is. I say bravo to them. Sure, only 25-30% of my games work out the door, but hell, that's a lot more than I expected. I'm sure they'll be adding to the list as long as gamers want it. That's what they said. Once support for it dies down they'll stop.

san @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
You need the hard drive for backwards compatibility. So, you can buy the premium system for $400 and get the hard drive included; or you can buy the core system for $300, buy the hard drive for an additional $100, and get backwards compatibility that way. Without the wireless controller and whatever "premium" goodies they throw in with the high end system.
It's really not their fault so much. Original Xbox games require the presence of a hard drive, and the base 360 kit doesn't include one.

I used to neglate the cool features that the three-shitty would have and how ps3 and rev would pwn it. Although sony is shooting them selves in the foot, in the balls, and in the ass to be exact and just because it has godly graphics doesn't mean it will be that fun. Infact it would seem that the x360 has a better ability to have more fun games especially xbox live.
Now looking back at ps3 i wonder why i was so drawn to it... oh yeah.. the FF7 tech demo. mmm.... I'm almost fully convinced to get a 360 instead of a ps3 and of course a revolution will be the icing *yum!*
But apparently you guys (the fans of x360) we're right. I usually bash people for being fanboys and I sorta ended out to be one in the end. The x360 is a good console, and the controller feels very good (perhaps the best controller ever made). I just hope alot of fun games comes out for the x360 and i'm sure there will be.
I was so sure that x360 would go the way of the dreamcast because it so resembled it in so many ways but overall its a sweet system.

Imagine if you still have some games left on your BC wish list and the space on your 360 Hard Drive equals Zero; you'll have to get a new, bigger, and more expensive hard drive.
Art Guy @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
This list is great. They have to play through the entire game to certify it due to the emulation and to make sure all of the visual effects work correctly. Last thing you would want is to get to the final boss and realize that the "blur" effect (or other gfx effect) isn't working. Plus thye already stated this list will get bigger. I hadn't even planned on playing my Xbox games on the 360 until they said the games will get a graphics boost. I'm very jazzed to try this out.

Oh, it's probably worth noting that PS2 compatibility with PS1 games wasn't so much to please PS1 owners with large game libraries -- you'd think they'd still have the PS1 to play with. It to entice the first time PlayStation buyer, the guy *without* a PS1. So Sony could push the "huge library of quality games" that would play on the PS2 on launch day, even though there may have been 10 or fewer launch titles.
I think Microsoft is probably doing the same thing: Leveraging the existing library of Xbox games to push the 360 to first-time Xbox buyers who want a fair number of games to choose from. Otherwise people will wait to buy the console until many games are available.
McFleshy @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM

Good question. The core system is for those that aren't interested in BC and the other things the HD offers. As amazing as it sounds to you or I, this demographic apparently exists.
$400 is a lot of money. You might be better off buying the Revolution or waiting til the Xbox360 price drops. The PS3 is also rumored to debut at $400 (without HDD).
The 20Gig HD is pricey because its an external drive. Internal drives are cheaper. If you truly want an HD Xbox360, buy the premium. For the extra $100, you get stuff worth ~$250 if bought separately.
Hope that helps.
