Nintendo is having quite the fourth quarter, thanks to the DS and its solid lineup of both first- and third-party
games. Though no recent US figures have been released, DS sales are tearing up the Japanese and European
charts. But how long can this portable momentum last?
On Monday, the company will launch their new wi-fi Internet service, free of charge, to gamers around the world. With
the service comes the much anticipated Mario Kart DS which will be a big factor in determining if Nintendo's
positive year-end results can turn into next year's profits. If the PSP doesn't get some must-have games quickly,
Nintendo may cement its dominance in the current generation of handhelds.
Will Mario Kart DS keep the company's portable momentum alive?

DS ALWAYS had WiFi too. It was just never used on a wide-scale world wide basis untill now. PSP online only supports like 3 games and im sure its done by each developer unlike NWFC, give Nintendo a break they were just working out the kinks, they games for WiFi will only get better.

Let me ask you something, Hachi_roku.
Do you even own a PSP much less look up new and information? I would doubt it.
I own both, read news about both and love both of them alot.
The PSP has many games that can use infrastructure WiFi. And why should they have "kinks" in the first place? The PSP worldwide WiFi started when It came out.

I read news about the PSP all the time. I like to see what games are coming out that may be a Killer app. My friends own one and I can say they all own like one game each. All I know is that everyone talks about Socom, and Wipeout. Nothing else so I added another for good measure. When I said Kinks I said that because the DS is said to be experimental it was never aimed at being the sucess that it is right now, so I am assuming that Nintendo probably had no intention of Kicking off NWFC this early. I think Nintendo is doing a good job so far, w/ tons of free hotspot to connect to everywhere and all.
and I never said I didnt like it as well, it looks amazing and If I had one im sure I would have Lumines, and Legend of Heroes when that comes out.

Man took a while to get thru all this! and I definitely agree with post 51, are you kidding? a psp redesign? a ds redisign sure, but the psp is gorgeous. I own a ds as a result of my recently thinned wallet, though if i had the money i would probably buy a psp too, especially after this last weekend. My cousin bought one off his buddy in perfect shape for $100! I was totally jealous, it just looks so much better... in every aspect. and not to mention it can play better emus as far as I know. we got snes and genisis running off the mem card, it ws pretty sick. I have a gba movie player so i have emus on my ds which is way cool, but i can only get nes, gbc (who cares) and sega master system emus, i'd kill for snes emulation! i mean just having one card for 100s of games, i love technology!
Anyway, I have to admit I am stoked about Mario Kart online and just in general. And speaking of girls and gaming, I am 24 and at college and literally every girl I know LOVES Mario Kart, if nintendogs (which I think is stupid after owning it for 2 monthes) didnt do it, this definitely will give the ds a further boost to expanding their market. And further everytime I show a girl my ds, they go crazy, they love the touch screen, especially the mini-games for mario 64 and Wario Ware Touched.
So basically Nintendo is a handheld gaming genius, i am very happy with my purchase especially with the upcoming mario kart and metroid hunters coming (animal crossing is stupid... not sure about Tony yet). Lets hope they can do the same with the REvolution. Keep up the disruptive behavior Nintendo!

The PSP has been a huge frustration for me; it's game library is absolutely abysmal. Lumines has kept me going for 2 months now but i CANNOT bring myself to spend money on lame ports from other consoles... I'm tempted to sell it on ebay in time for christmas.
Is there ANY reason to hang on to this system when it comes to games? I haven't even been sent my free Spiderman 2 UMD to really demo the movie function. I've been waiting 6 weeks on that one. Not to mention the counterintuitive 'multimedia' functions... Putting video/music on it is a pain in the ass, and Sony sure do have massive balls doing the old double dip and asking their customers to cough up again for a simple way to transfer their media. They have really badly screwed this baby up. It's gone from my #1 lust of 05 to my biggest dissapointment in a *long* time.

The thing with the PSP - and the reason everyone moans about the PS2 ports - is that it isn't really a handheld that competes with Nintendo. Sony thought that they could do the same thing to the handheld industry that they did to the home console industry. But all they've done is create competition for themselves. Developers are choosing between developing for the PSP and the PS2, not the PSP and DS. Consumers are choosing between a new PSP game and a new PS2 game (maybe even ported versions of the same game). As some of the comments above have noted, some are simply replacing the PS2 with a PSP.
Sony have a great product with some great games (especially if the originals of the ports didn't exist) but they're don't seem able to convince those PS2 owners that the PSP is something different that they need to own.

Matt,
Thank you, you said quite a few excellent points. And you didnt put down the PSP nor the DS.
But one this is confirmed. Most people who have posted here own a DS and not a PSP. Maybe its money. Or maybe its the fact that they grew up playing mario, and they will die playing mario. I on the other hand(along with a few others) dont care about which system, or company I am playing on/with. As long as the games are good, and graphics are up to snuff then Im fine.
Oh and let me go ahead and name some pretty good PSP games out so far.
Lumines
GTA:LCS
SSX: On tour
Metal gear acid (Number 2 coming soon)
Socom: FTB
Sims 2(Not out, but will be)
LOTR: Tactics
Battlefront II(Kinda iffy. Wasnt the best for graphics)
Infected(Out soon)
Loco Rocco(sp?) (Demo was awesome)
Splinter cell 4 (XD Not released, but I can dream!)
Meh. I could go on. There is also the countless amount of homebrew and emulation.
Come on, who doesnt like having 200+ NES games in your pocket?

"hey, have you ever heard of a "PDA"? "
Really, PDA's have better than N64 graphics and developer support like NDS.. i really didn't know that...

You could go on hm? Let me clear things up for you.. Popolocrois is a hurting SNES-style RPG. That's not much to hang the hopes of an entire platform on.. maybe SqEnix will save the PSP like they did with the original PS (FF7)
Oh wait.. FF is making tons of games for.. the DS.. got it...

"Sorry. Now, the PSP is like the PS2's online setup... somewhat shoddy, not unified, rather hit-and-miss. That's not to say the PSP's WiFi is crappy, it's just less... formal. That's not really a good thing, but it's not too much a bad thing, either."
Ah, now you know how Mac users feel when they look at Windows. *cringe* You get about 10X as many Apps, but most of them are disgusting shite.

Ok...I'm a psp owner and I know the unit has it's problems, but I just dont get it when it comes to ports. It seems like when the psp has a port everyone turns their nose up at it, but as soon as nintendo releases a 10 year old N64 game, everyone goes crazy. I mean wtf? Too many nintendo fanboys. If you're gonna be critical of either system, at least be fair about it. Like I said, I own the psp and I'm always quick to point out whats wrong with it whenever a discussion like this comes about. A few others out there should do the same...

Actually, er.. it's pretty obvious how this has to do with Apple: Sony can't do software.. you think they can do something like Xbox Live? They have to outsource all that shit.. try using MiniDisc software, or Sony's lastest PSP software and get back to me.
MS's advantage over PS3 with online is akin to DS's software mastery over PSP.
Sony makes machines. TV's. DVD players. Speakers. They make great gear. They basically set up a great machine, and the 3rd parties take over. Their ignorance in software will come to roost.
Apple is vertically integrated, they know hardware AND software.. and Mac users are the beneficiaries of that. It's been this way forever.
I don't need to waste my time bashing Windows, I just mentioned the similarities...
Long story short.. MS makes you (and the devs) do the work they don't wanna do. Same goes for Sony with its online stuff.. YOU set it up.. you're on your own, each company has their own unique service, its up to you to get it right, no communication from Sony.
Where's the unified marketing for Sony's online service like nintendowifi.com.. ? There is none.

The thing with the psp is... I don't want to buy a game on a handheld that would be better viewed on a sexy tv with 5.1 surround. I want some psp-exclusives that justify the systems existence. I'm really just stunned by the lack of titles that are really worth grabbing. IGN ranks a whole load of psp titles in the 6-8 range, and given their tendencey for leniant scoring, I'm not about to dump my cash into any of the titles mentioned.
The only thing the psp has going for it is the status-symbol thing. Man do I ever get myself gawked at when I'm playing that thing. I don't like the DS. It's clunky and large. Purely personal preference on the aesthetics of the thing. But damn, I really wish a game like nintendogs or advance wars or SOMETHING would find its way onto the system I'm becoming considerably more regretful of purchasing.... Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't have picked up the PSP with a 10 foot game pole.
The only game I'm slightly interested in buying is LOTR Tactics, but I haven't liked anything EA have done with that license to date. I haven't dabbled in homebrew, and I really dislike that a system that should be blowing my socks off is relying on software that the manufacturers are trying to stop you from accessing to make it worthy of purchasing. Gah! The whole thing is totally backwards.

The DS is getting a ton of games coming out for it. Most of them are average quality. However that's not really a bad thing. It's a sign that developers are jumping on board. The low cost of developing plus the short development time is finally starting to pay off. All a system needs to take the lead is a ton of games. That's why so many casual gamers went with the PS2. So yea, Nintendo is picking up speed and I don't see them slowing down anytime soon.
Enough with the comments on how great the PSP is, how it's sold out everywhere you look, or how everyone is jealous that you have one. Save those for positive posts about the PSP (although I haven't seen one in awhile) don't be jealous that the DS is doing so well. You’re just trying to deflate the success of the DS and you come off sounding extremely childish. Which is ironic because wasn't the PSP for the more serious, mature gamer?

ATV: Offroad Fury
SOCOM FTB
MLB
Gretzky 05
Gretzky 06
FIFA 06
NBA 06
X-Men Legends II

#74, well Mortal Kombat Trilogy getting out before christmas on PSP, but not online, only adhoc, big deception there :)
As for the online thing, I would be curious to know how many peoples will play Mario Kart online at the launch. I know SOCOM impressed me a bit, there was like 500 users the day the game got out, between 750-1000 last night.
I think the style of the game PSP and DS are REALLY different, it's not for the same peoples. I really have no interrest in the DS games that are out. Nintendogs ?? I can't even understand why peoples can like this kind of stuff. Maybe Kario Kart, even then Crash bandicoot Racing getting out soon, that's fine with me (for the Kart style). I own 8 PSP games already, really more my kind, sports games (NBA, MLB, Tennis, Golf, soon Winning Eleven 9), FPS (like SOCOM really rule), Lumines, Tony, etc. I'm really not disapointed with my PSP. It does all I needed. And I'm really happy with the games line-up.

To Self Conshus
The point I think most are trying to make regarding ports on psp is that they are ports of existing games and therefore share shelf space with their PS2 counterparts. Ports of games you can no longer buy for their original systems are more justifyable purchases to many/
If we had ports of PS1 games but improved graphically, noone would complain.(PSP Symphony of the Night please, Konami)

saying the PSP is awesome because of the emu's is kinda worthless talk, I mean I have SNES/(Pogo)NES/Genesis emulators on my GBA/DS (well my sisters)
thats what I use it for mostely because the only games we own is Mario 64, and the Metroid Demo.
Homebrew shouldnt be a selling point, so I don't know why it keeps coming up. have you compaired how long it takes to load a SNES game (from power off) on a PSP verses DS? much quicker boot time on the DS.

Here's my story:
I went mad months ago I went mad at a BestBuy somewhere in Texas and bought a DS(Mario DS) and a PSP(Wipeout Pure) both systems had death pixels and then I realized my credit card was maxed. So I went back and returned the DS and had the PSP exchanged (new unit still has a dead pixel). I did that because I played more with the PSP, then the firmwares made it a great thing to check Engadget without booting the laptop, so it was cool. The thing is PSP games/movies are expensive and I don't play that much anymore. I'm keeping the thing because I look forward to the LocationFree TV thing, would it be a SlingBox that support PSP?
But now I will get a DS, because of Mario Kart, maybe even 2 or 3, one for sister to play MK with me even on the other side of the country and other for girlfriend to play Nintendogs and hate gaming a bit less, there's hope I guess.
So let me give a tip to Sony and Nintendo. Make content "play before you buy" and make it down-loadable, DRM it if you feel so, but keep it cheap, a la iTunes, and then you've got the killer portable console. Also make online playing free, cheers to Nintendo for doing that. Because of this feature is why I'm passing on the current wave of consoles and will eagerly wait for the Revo.
