Research firm Gartner conducted a final tally on the eve of the Xbox 360 launch and
determined the market share numbers for the PlayStation 2 (51%), the original Xbox (34%), and the Nintendo GameCube
(15%).
Gartner's numbers are significantly higher than our understanding of how the big three had split the console pie, so we're not sure how they figure. Previous estimates had the PS2 shipping approximately 100 million units worldwide, with the Xbox and GameCube at about 20 million each. That would put the share figures at 70% for the PS2, and roughly 15% each for the GameCube and Xbox.
We've sent a note to Gartner asking them how they came up with those estimates. We'll let you know if they provide any clarification.
