We've
referenced his blog before, but Danc's got
some interesting ideas in the form of 5 steps (concerning "a method of getting to an answer") on how to get gaming
out of its current funk and into "forming new markets and expanding the industry":
-
Step 1: Stop fixating on the current game market
-
Step 2: Stop listening to your gut
-
Step 3: Learn about product design
-
Step 4: Surround yourself with other perspectives
-
Step 5: Build an integrated business plan
Danc's theory seems to be more focused on designing games that non-gamers would like, rather than the ones favored
by hardcore gamers (who tend to actually be the ones making the games). While we'd prefer that Hollywood portray
gamers in a more
sympathetic light—or at least that the media do a better job of
marketing to
untapped demographics—a radical paradigm shift may be needed in every part of the industry (publisher, developer,
and down the chain) if new genres are to be created, and the needs of people unlike us catered to. Admittedly, it's a
tall order, but do these steps point in the right direction towards that change in culture?
