NPR covers professional gaming superstar FATAL1TY

Xeni over at BoingBoing covered professional gaming superstar FATAL1TY today for NPR's Day to Day. Much of the story focused on the branding of FATAL1TY as an "athlete" and spokesman for his own line of hardware and gaming accessories. Compare this to other athletes who also sell a product like Michael Jordan and his eponymous sneaker and the practice is hardly controversial.

FATAL1TY is set to compete for $150k in next week's CPL where he's already a five-time winner. Don't forget, MTV is set to provide coverage of this in their week long "assault" on gamers.

Give me a break! I went to the webpage to see what 'fatality' was all about. Training till 2 in the morning drinking strawberry milk and banquet dinners. Is this for real or a bad dream?

I think it's a joke to call a pro-gamer an "athlete". I'll call Fatal1ty an athlete when he plays at the olympics. He specifically may not go but there will be virtual games at the olympics someday.

I met Fatal1ty at E3 last may and got to talk with him for a few minutes and he is actually a really cool kid. You gotta respect him for what he's done with his "talent"... his winnings and his brand name. Check out his website sometime and read his bio, it's pretty interesting. If any of you could win $150k by playing ut2k4 wouldn't you? No one ever called Michael Jordan a sell out for selling shoes with his name on it (which by the way kick ass!)... MJ is a professional just like Fatal1ty is.

yeah, sorry but.. even though i love chess i refuse to qualify it as a sport (despite the fact that many people DO classify it as a sport and that you can, in fact, burn calories playing it). i also love gaming, but hell if i'll call a pro gamer an athlete.
