chris: That sounds great and all but for one thing. The hardrive itself is only 20 gigs. I have accumulated quite a few games over the years. How would that system work without having to redownload games everytime you are in the mood for something besides Halo3.

Actually, most of you are forgeting the Dreamcast Fiasco, and honestly your forgeting that PS3 has all its support from the previous generation (don't give me that rumour hoop;a thats going around), no company has really said they were jumping exclusivily to the x1.5 bandwagon, and seriously look at the x360! It looks like a piece of shitty recycled plastic! and then look at the PS3 & Rev both slick with touch motiony goodness, at least sony is making its console non-dfective (*cough Walmart x360), fully next-gen. Joystiq are full of stupid kids, who can't even write a basic PHP script!

In the end ypu people should wait till December or January and see it for yourself the HYPE Will be bac after 8 months of development!

first of all in my last comment i has referring to bd. About the medium issue. There is a simple solution to that. I have heard rumors that M$ will be releasing a 40 or 80GB harddrive as early as this summer that will sell for the same $100. As far as fitting the data to a disk, I don't see what the big deal is with 2 or 3 disc games. FFVII was one of the greatest games of all time. It took up 4 discs on the PS1, and it still sold like crazy. Almost EVERY PC game is still on CD's they just give you like 3-5 discs to install. On GCN RE4 was 2 discs and it was a huge success. If a company runs outta room, all they gotta go is use another disc, big deal. Games have been on multiple discs since consoles started using CD's, it's nothing new. If you consider that one single layer BluRay disc holds around 20GB of data (i doubt they'll use dual layer discs at first) all you need is 2 Dual Layer DVD's to match that almost. What's the big deal?

I've said it before, Ken needs some quiet time in the corner, if he just let the games do thetalking, maybe people would be more forth coming in believing what Sony says as fact concerning what their machines can and cannot do.

The PS3 and the 360 will be about equal.

"But Sony's screenshots and videos are better looking!!"

Says who? Have you been closing your eyes when they show footage from PGR3? Have you even LOOKED at a screenshot of Dead Rising or Gears of War?

FANBOIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11!1!one!!!1

Buy the system of your choice, and wait until both contenders have made their presence known. Only then MIGHT there be a clear winner. Still, doubtful.

Until then, continue litorally fellating your company of choice... or accept the fact that no amount of internet debate will seal the deal for either console.

Daver, you are a moron.

I LIVE in downtown Nagasaki. (You know, the other Atomic bombed city) ALL 10 of the top ten movies this month are American. 5 of the top 10 albums are American. Levies jeans sell out everywhere.

They don't buy Xbox because the games out for it in Japan are not to the Japanese taste. Halo didn't sell well but it wasn't because it was "an evil American company" it sold bad because it was a FPS. Japanese mad FPS games sell badly too. Also MS in Japan charged nearly $70 for new games as compared to $50 for new ps2 games. And basically ignored the Japanese market.

It is not based out of racism but of taste. Your comment on the other hand WAS racist. Judging an entire race of people that you have never met and deciding what they belive, based on bad xbox sales.

Clearly most of you have overlooked the Revolution entirely. The new generation will not merely be a battle between xbox and ps for graphical bragging rights. This generation exclusive games are going to be so much more vital. This clearly puts Sony in an awful position. I have no idea how they've managed to be successful, they have accumulated the worst first party games I've ever seen. People are retarded. Nintendo has Mario and the gang, and Microsoft has Rare and bungie. Squaresoft is clearly branching out, one less for Sony. So is Gta. They really have absolutely nothing less. You can all argue the specs for the rest of your lives, but I'm not looking for what looks the best, I'm looking for which system I'll have the most fun with. That was the point of video games, to have fun, remember?

The problem with the disks is that if you make a game like next gen gta you will probaly have a massive city that is detailed down to the trash. now each part of the city takes up massive amounts of space. plus you have devote space to the a.i and physics, so unless you want to play 3 seconds of gameplay and then change disks your going to nee a large storage format.

Am i the only one who thinks that microsoft droped the ball with this console? their launching with current gen visuals and same gameplay. the next gen isn't just about graphics it's about makeing massive detailed worlds, that are as big as the real world and populating that with advanced intelegent a.i. first person shooters should no longer be about walking around cramped hallways and shooting guys who pop out and then find cover and pop out and then find cover. hard modes should no longer be about making you weaker and your enemies stronger but rather leaving you alone and making your enemies smarter. it should also be about innovation which is why i love the revolution. the 360 will be like the dreamcast, it'll have great games and dominate for a little while but when people see real next gen they'll move on.

To answer the question asked, which side has the marketing advantage right now... well, that's a silly question because Microsoft has the marketing machine at full throttle and Sony is still a ways off before they are ready to push their console and the 360 is being released right before Christmas which is an obvious marketing plus. That question doesn't even make sense because the consoles aren't being released at the same time, how can you really compare marketing advantage?

fat bunnies - Having a bigger storage medium, especially a ROM medium, will not mean the videogame system can load bigger textures and better AI.

It will require: Faster processor, both system and video; high bandwidth, faster bus and memory; and a lot of system memory (RAM). If a system has 512MB RAM, it will theoretically not be able to load texture bigger than 512MB on-screen, but it will use less considering RAM is required for AI, physics, sound, buffer, etc... Don't expect the Blu-ray drive to cache that for you since its read-only.

Granted bigger storage will let the game load additional data at a later time, but that's about it. I don't see any other benefits.

If you look at the statistics gaming is going down except for the parts where they are innovational. Last generation was all about graphics, and next generation is all about innovation. Innovation will come in new styles of gameplay, vast online capabilities, and affordable. These are things that the PS3 will not have.

If statistics are correct Playstation 3 will ultimately loose more than it gained and Xbox 360 and Revolution will be the ones who prevail.

If Sony doesn't end at Playstation 3, they just as might well be by PS4. All I know is that I want to have games downloadable via my brain like in that PS2 commercial :P

Dear god... Can the PS4 really be that? o.o;;

I've been wondering lately why Joystiq SEEMINGLY does so many positive stories about the XBox 360, while most stories regarding the PS3, and Sony in general, tend to spin negative (interesting choice of "propaganda machine" in this article's title, for one easy example)...

And then it occurred to me that Microsoft is currently contemplating buying AOL, A Time-Warner company that owns Weblogs, Inc, which spawns this Joystiq blog. (If not an outright sale to Microsoft, then a strong and lucrative partnership)...

In the past, I never noticed any sort of MS/XBox bias at Joystiq, but it seems to me that it began within the last couple months, and I wonder if this began around the time that Microsoft's interest in AOL began, or at least became known to the public. I can say that AOL bought Weblogs, Inc on or around October 6th, a date which fall within the timeline of this (conspiracy) theory of mine.

One question of mine - If Microsoft does NOT acquire AOL (Google and a couple other companies have show interest), can we then expect Joystiq to abandon all these XBox "blowjob stories", and actually start being a bit more fair in their coverage of the gaming industry as a whole?

My second question - If Microsoft DOES buy AOL, or partners with them, can we then assume that Joystiq will morph, once and for all, into a transparent and wholly obvious champion of all things MS/XBox?

I realize Sony does plenty to sully its own name and brand, and the 360 launch is nearly upon us, but surely I can't be alone in detecting at least some MS/XBox bias on this blog.

I also realize that Joystiq is merely a blog, and therefore not tied to any notion of fair and accurate reporting, but again, I cannot be alone in detecting at least some MS/XBox bias on this blog.

Just some food for thought. I enjoy reading Joystiq, but something has changed around here lately, and the last time I checked, I'm not completely batshit crazy.

"If you look at the statistics gaming is going down except for the parts where they are innovational." [sic]

What statistics are these? Or are you just babbling? Oh, and I think the word "innovational" is itself innovational.

"Last generation was all about graphics, and next generation is all about innovation."

Yeah, because we know the machine with the fastest hardware won the last round, right? Har, har.

"Innovation will come in new styles of gameplay, vast online capabilities, and affordable. These are things that the PS3 will not have."

You have divined this how? You know what games are coming out for the PS3 during its entire lifetime, eh? I'll bet Sony would be fascinated. Perhaps you should apply for a job at SCEA. Or with Miss Cleo.

"If statistics are correct Playstation 3 will ultimately loose more than it gained and Xbox 360 and Revolution will be the ones who prevail."

Which statistics are these?!? Your post doesn't make any sense.

The only statistics that hold any water are the number of consoles sold and the amount of money made. Sony sold a bjillion consoles and made a mountain of money from the PS2. Nintendo made a tidy profit off far fewer consoles, but not quite Sony money IIRC, and MS took a bath -- out $4 billion on the console over its lifetime.

Sheesh. Get a clue, dude. And work on your verb tenses while you're hunting for that clue. Literacy before videogames, man.

All you fanboys are a laugh. Keep up the good fight.

Anonymous coward: It's already 5 billion.

But anyway, people, I just got info from my source (the friend of the cousin of the gamestop shareholder that happens to have a contact in Sony of Japan ('s area of marketing or something like that) I was talking about). The PSV will be like this:

-Holographic Atomic Storage (So if you thought 3.9 terabytes was a lot; this one holds not less than 10 Terabytes, and it can hold up to 10 Exabytes (yes, you read well, that is 10 quintillion bytes; just to give you an idea, you can store a full century (one hundred years of time, do the math) of movies))
-The first qubit processor in consoles.
-Prepared for the "Next generation" of video, perhaps able to upgrade itself for holograms
-This time (for real) it will feature photorealistic images (go figure)
-Optic fiber connections.
-And a lot of shit or something like that (that's what they said)

There are also a few rumors about PS6. It is said that behind doors, Kutaragi mentioned that it would be called "PSIX". When questioned why, he said "It's similar to the Pentium ViiV logo, that is pronounced 'five' yet it means 64. What I'm trying to say is, you pronounce it 'six', but we want to give you the impression that this is our ninth generation (that's why the 'IX'), because this could be the ultimate generation of computer entertainment; we want to make the observer think they are three generations ahead of our time, not just 4.5...". He simply mentioned that the next generation would include DNA and water processing mixed with quantum computer chipsets, optic fibers, and that it would be able to connect to four hologram displays at the same time (even if you only need one; it's pointless to add more, but Kutaragi presumes it'll work for 'military purposes'). The only concrete data he gave, was that the discs it would use (Sony proprietary formats of course), would be subatomic holographic storage discs in the range of "between 10 Yotabytes and 10 Zetabytes" of information.

When questioned about PS7, he said that the PSIX would last until the end of times, so that there would be no need to launch another console entertainment computer *cough* console *cough*.

Sony propaganda...Yes.

Xbox 360 propaganda...Yes. Things I am disappointed with the new console already: a HUGE power adaptor, a wireless controller with NO CHARGER in the premium package, buffed up graphics but NOT GAMEPLAY.

Take any reviews online:

PGR3 looks stunning but how about car damage? You drive a car into the wall going 150mph or more and nothing happens...

NBA2K6 is amazing to look at but plays the same as on Xbox or PS2...

Call of Duty 2 is as good as on high-end PC. Wasn't Microsoft talking about Xbox 360 being at least one generation ahead of everything available on the market today?..

After all that complaining, I guess, I will buy it. Obsession about new tech things is no good...

You know bd, you're almost right. Except, if you ask anyone on the street about gaming systems, you'll get one of 3 answers. Nintendo, Playstation, or Gameboy. No matter what the system is, everyone calls it one of those three things, because those are the names they know. 5 year old kids who have never played a video game in their life go into game stores and ask their parents do they sell Nintendo games. Playstation has started to eat into that mindshare, and anyone who isn't a gamer has a tendency to call any system a playstation. The only people who even think Xbox are gamers. Even with all the marketing, it just doesn't have the history, and therefore the mindshare, to make it a byword among non-gamers. No amount of advertising is going to change that, only time.

"the 360 will be like the dreamcast, it'll have great games and dominate for a little while but when people see real next gen they'll move on."

What happened to the dreamcast is really symptomatic of actual gamers, they don't want a console because you can have some fun with it, they want it because they were told that what they will get in 8 month will be more fun.

Dreamcast had good games, very good games but everybody jumped on a machine which did not get a single good game worth to be played before FFX (yeah I mean PS2). That must have been really hard to have waiting almost 2 years before playing games really made for this machine while a few people were playing to Soul Calibur, Shenmue, Hundred Swords, X-Men vs Capcom 2, etc.

If gamers could think with their brain (you know the sponge-thingy between your ears) we would have betters consoles and better games.

And yes I love the Dreamcast and hate the PS2 (even if I own one, shame on me but FFX and Ico are so great).

Sony is this big company that can't move fast enough anymore, and they bring the wrong equipment to market or they try to introduce new technologies that ultimately fail. They're a dinosaur.

To be talking about the PS4 when the PS3 isn't even released yet, just goes to show you that they're scared the PS3 could fail.

I've had similar thoughts over the past couple months. Right now Joystiq is acting like fox news. Saying there is no bias but only truely covering one side of the story and giving a mild look at the other side.

How will we know when Joystiq becomes basicly property of Microsoft?

It doesn't really matter which system sports the better hardware or capabilities. I'm willing to say as long as there are games that are appealing to any kind of person, be it a genre that they like, video game consoles do their job of entertaining that person. Sony being better, Microsoft being better, Nintendo being better. Who cares. Sure, it only applies when you look at hardware specifications, but it is really a matter of the game companies that make the games, that can best represent the consoles for what they are worth.
