Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest NOT 360-bound
It was a nice dream, at any rate. Faster than you can say Yoichi
Wada comes news from Square Enix (via 1up) that the Reuters
article from yesterday, which hinted at possible
next-generation Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy titles for the Xbox 360, are inaccurate. It appears
that Sony will continue to hold the main Final Fantasy franchise as long as it still can.
Xbox 360 owners still have the online-centric Final Fantasy XI. There is always a chance Square Enix could
one day move allegiances, but right now they still seem adamant to stick (at least,
primarily) to the now-dominant Sony PlayStation 2.
We'll update this post as soon as more information is released.
[Thanks, Chris_C]

FF is played out plus the 360 has alot of better rpgs coming to it E. Arm, Blue Dragon, Lost Oddessy, Fable 2, Jade Empire 2, Kotor 3, Mass effect, and more hahaha

That hurts, but its not the end of the world. This will have a larger negative impact with making the X360 more inviting to the Japanese gamers.

LOL, poison? Which kind of poison would have a serious effect on silicon anyway?
jc @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
"Which kind of poison would have a serious effect on silicon anyway?" Seeing the the Liquid Cooling likely doesn't come into contact with the silicon in the IC/processors, but is instead contained in what I would guess is a copper housing and cooling fins... all you would need is somthing to oxidize the copper (or corrode it quickly).
:P

This would probably sting Xbox fanboys but I don't think anyone's holding their breath for Final Fantasy XIII / Dragon Quest IX considering their current iterations have taken / are taking forever to be finished.

Final Fantasy?
Who cares?

LOL, I know BX, it's just that poisoning the 360... sorry, I was being too logical.
Yeah, I've played FF6, and it's much better than 7

Who cares?"
Too many people except you, my friend.

@RMF: Everyone in Japan and a good portion of the rest of the world.
Matt @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
yeah seriously who cares... im not from Japan, I live in New York and I dont know one person who likes/plays final fantasy. So laugh all you want, its irrelavant and no one cares.
BXJoseff @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
"Final Fantasy?
Who cares?"
Millions of people--who cares about you?
hey bd, I would have to say FF6 was awesome--it was the first time I felt anger and sadness in a video game, particularly during the part when Kefka poisoned the water supply and everyone, INCLUDING the little children died.
Final Fantasy 7 made me cry, I think it was just the fact that Aeris knew she had to die, and when Sephiroth killed her, it was so peaceful--almost beautiful--it was very emotional.
oh yes, you were being way too logical man, but I understand--we all do that sometimes, and totally kill the jovial mood in the room cuz we like it.
BXJoseff @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
I live in the Bronx...and uhm...I was once in a static for FFXI made up of all members from the Bronx...so...please, don't embarrass me and tell everyone you're from New York man.

"WATER=WATER COOLING TANK OF THE XB360"
It's funny, despite Microsoft toting the Xbox 630 as being water cooled, it's actually just three largish heat pipes on the processor. It's nothing revolutionary, PC manufacturer's have been doing it for about 4 years now. Hell, even my crappy Dell has heat pipes on the processor's heatsink.
And if you want to effectively kill the processor, poison would not be the preferred method. The easiest way would be to drill a small hole in each heat pipe. The coolant inside will vaporize into steam, escape, then overheat the CPU.
I'm sure that's really what you meant, but something must have gotten lost in the translation from Japanese to English... That wacky Kefka!
John @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
although the new final fantasy game (presumably FFXIII) and dragon quest will most likely be headed for the PS3, and crystal chronicles will be headed for the revolution, speculation has it that Hiromichi Tanaka, the creator of the first MMO Final Fantasy game is going to be working on another Final Fantasy MMO game that is headed to the 360. Given that the tech demos shown at X05 for FFXI on 360 were partly the teams experiments with next-gen graphics on the 360 one would assume the next MMO FF game will be headed for 360, this and the fact that M$ is marketing it as an extremely online system are two reasons people think the game is headed to the 360. So this time around maybe square will be giving all the consoles some love?

BXJoseff:
I totally agree... Final Fantasy titles are like reading books. They provoke feelings that no other game would. I think that final fantasy is the best overall gaming experience. Sure, Zelda OoT is my favorite game, but in my all time favorite games, Final Fantasy among others rules on that list.
Final Fantasy (any) has the best soundtrack of all games. These games too, are the ones that exploit the graphical capabilities of any system. The storyline is always deep, and gameplay is always great.
I was disappointed with the last two though (FFX and X-2). I didn't see the point in making a sequel to X, specially when it is comparable to Charlie's Angles more than to any other FF. Oh, and FFX was too linear, and had very few Aeons/GFs/Eidolons.
My favorite FF game is 8. I think it is the most innovative, has the best music score, and had the best cut-scenes. I just loved Junction system. It is my second favorite game of all time, tied with Chrono Cross, Kingdom Hearts and Mario RPG for SNES. They were all made by Square (at least at some point).
I miss the days when you could fly all over the world of FF, and not automatically be transported like in FFX.
Hopefully, Sakaguchi will make up for that on Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, among other things.
I can't wait for FFXII, Kingdom Hearts 2, Dragon's Quest VIII, and their respective sequels on PS3.
Phew, long ass post.

Anyone know why Square left Nintendo's platform after the SNES? I'm guessing it was because the N64 was such a joke. Anyways, I'd like to see Square get back with Nintendo, where they were in the beginning and where they should be now.

John - CDs. It was all about the cds. Storing a massive game on a cart is cost prohibitive, plus the license fees where much lower on the PS1.

I think a lot of ppl miss the point, its not so much about if you think FF or DQ is boring, its the biggest killer app for Japan.
While, this doesn't mean the XB360 will fail in Japan, it guratees that the PS3 will be a massive success. DQ8 was the biggest hit for the PS2, DQ has been the biggest gaming brand name is Japan for over a decade, it's up their with Mario.
but the new isn't suprising being that Sony is a shareholder of Square Enix, and is on the board of directors.
InfoMofo @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Art Guy - I also heard that there was some sort of formal feud between Nintendo and SquareEnix for a while.

Anyone remember the 3 games per console theory? Oh right that was Squaresoft and now its Square-Enix. Then again, its really Squaresoft that i cared for.

Yes there are other RPGs coming for the 360 but the brand name of Final Fantasy is big news...

Hmmm. If SE won't show any love for the 360, might they for the Revolution? I mean, I thought there was going to be a shift in allegiance after Tactics Advance ...
... but maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Turn based rpgs suck ass

bd, you mean like what was on the 'cube? No thanks. That game was amusing for about two hours. Using Blizzara, Blizzara, Blizzara, Blizzara got extremely boring. I never bothered to get past Year 3.
I want a "real" FF, like Tactics, a turn-based rpg. Like the type that sucks, according to Mr. Sparkler.

Square leaving Nintendo isn't this terrible drawn-out affair that some people would have you believe.
Nintendo created the N64, but even with the promises of the 64DD (then known as the "bulky drive"), the technology couldn't compete with CDs for the type of game they wanted to make, so they left Nintendo development behind.
Also, former president Hiroshi Yamauchi was still running Nintendo under the banner of monopoly, afraid that the industry would fall apart without his company's guiding influence in every 3rd-party project. Square rejected that, Yamauchi said some nasty senility-induced words, Square took offense. It happens.
Sony bolstered their support by buying shares and shoveling money into the company. Sony also restricted development on other platforms (hence the now-famous workaround in order to develop on Gamecube), but during the merger with Enix, the developer bought its shares back from Sony, with Sony owning a mere 7% or lower, no longer a controlling share.
To recap, Nintendo has an un-senile president, Square Enix has a president with no Nintendo-based grudge, Sony holds no financial control of S-E, and we have 3 strong next-gen platforms...
So with that said, as far as where Square Enix plunks its franchises, it's totally up in the air, with no guarantee of any platform.
justchris @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM
Dragon Quest VIII is already out.
bd, are you sure you meant Chrono Cross and not Chrono Trigger? Cross was very disappointing, whereas Trigger was awesome.
Tactical RPGs are not the same as traditional console RPGs. I happen to like tactical RPGs, but I can get those from Nippon Ichi (who've been exclusive to PS2 so far) or from Nintendo (specifically intelligent systems who makes Advance Wars and Fire Emblem). While I would love to see another Final Fantasy Tactics, I would hope they wouldn't screw it up like they did Tactics Advance. They took out the one feature that made the original FFT better than any other Turn-based Tactical RPG.
Also, Crystal Chronicles for the gamecube was disappointing, however, it also wasn't made by the main Square-Enix devteams. It was made by a semi-seperate holding company partly owned by Nintendo, partly owned by Square-Enix. The Rev version (or so I've heard) is being developed in-house, and will hopefully be a massive improvement.
I think Mephy explained the Yamauchi-Square situation pretty well.
On the 360 I'm looking forward to Lost Odyssey, not so much Blue Dragon. I'll have to see more about it.
John @ Dec 18th 2005 10:09PM

Thanks for that write up...
