Our sweet screen setup
As seen in our last post regarding our sweet speaker
setup, we've got what appears to be a screen of some sort on the wall where we've run our projector before. Chris
went ahead and painted a projector screen on the wall with reflective white ceiling paint.
We had to do something to increase the contrast of the projected image, so we chose phosphorus-containing paint (which
cost a whopping nine bucks) to better see our games during the day. Contrast this to the $160 treatment required by the
more high-end projector goop recommended online.
The equally costly painter's tape (as compared to our cheap paint supplies) may go on the wall again if we deem such a
border necessary, but this is what we have up now. Note the border between the area covered with two coats versus the
surrounding area that was not painted over. You can see a few more close-ups of the divided areas below after the
jump.

So the projector displays 720p!!?!??!
Balazs @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
Does it, I didn't know that projectors can do 720p?? it seems far too high for a proj. If it is only 420p then it is a bit stupid coz you won't get all the hd goodness!

I think projectors can do 1080i, just not 1080p

You guys are making me jealous! My 360 comes in the mail tomorrow (courtesy of Mtn. Dew). Sadly, I will not have a setup nearly as great..eventually, but not for awhile.
So, you guys single? LOL.

...are you kidding... i thought $5k projects have like 200 lines... and i know for sure they can do more than 60fps
Joe @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM

The projector is a Panasonic PT-AE700U, and it does indeed do 720p AND 1080i. Halo2 looks great!

There's really no limit to what projectors can project, there are do-it-yourself projects that illustrate the fact pretty clearly. Its just light going through a display screen like an LCD, magnified and shot out onto a screen. 720p is not only doable, but fairly reasonable at around $1500 (http://www.visualapex.com/lcdprojectors/LCD_projectors_details.asp?chPartNumber=PLV-Z3&MFR=Sanyo)

I'd like to know if you guys can see (or maybe photograph) a difference between projecting on the treated wall and projecting on the untreated wall (maybe slide the projector over to do half and half)
I project on a smooth off-white wall in my apartment and it looks great at night, mediocre during the day.

Joystiq- The most bootleg blog on the net! Seriously, you guys rule. Those speakers are straight out of 1985. So when do we get to see Joystiq editors with He-Man lunchboxes and legwarmers?

You can get 1080p with an expensive projeetor, they just recently had one in Popular Science.

ZipperSeven @ Dec 18th 2005 9:37PM
If it's a multimedia projector it could probably go up to (or higher than, even) resolutions of 1600 x 1200, more than enough to project 1080, it's whether or not it can truly display progressive scan instead of interlaced that's the key.

Which company paint did you purchase? I've called around, and no one seems to be carrying reflective paint anymore. Any place I could order it from online?
