Joystiq review: Gauntlet demo

gauntlet banner

Midway has brought its classic dungeon-crawler to the Xbox Live Arcade and, despite some cosmetic touches, does nothing to diferentiate itself from its quarter-hungry hack & slash ancestor. The demo allows you to play as any of the four "different" characters, the Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, and Elf, through two levels. The franchise's popular co-op mode is unavailable in either local or Live on the demo.

Gauntlet High life

There is one redeeming quality of this iteration: unlimited health! The scientists at Joystiq Labs found that by pressing Y you fill your health faster than walking into enemies depletes it, and in turn kill them faster than using your weapon! When you can “add money” to the machine faster than fire your weapon, it’s a clear sign of the designer’s intentions. Even though the demo is free and the “insert quarter” feature is free, it’s hard not to feel violated when you play a game whose every waking moment is consumed by thoughts of shiny, silver coins.
