Wasn't Joystiq nominated for something? Like best gaming blog?
jago @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
It sure doesn't surprise me that a no-talent guy like 50 cent won for "Best Original Song."
As for the PSP winning a bunch of awards...doesn't surprise me since that channel is known for having shows and movies with Van Dam and other washed up "actors." Just b/c something has superior technology doesn't mean it is superior in everything else.
I own a PSP btw...but I'm sure there will be idiots saying I'm anti-Sony or something.
Sagan @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Shouldn't they wait for the year to be over before selecting which game is the best?
Also some strange picks... A Gamecube game for best graphics??? I would have expected something like Quake IV, Half Life 2 or AoE 3. I mean the graphics in RE 4 are great, but Quake IV repeatedly wows you.
And the publishers of King Kong and 50 Cent definitely had to pay a lot of money to the right person in order to get their games in there, simply because the games weren't even out when the nominees where chosen.
jago @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
You are right about people from King Kong or 50 Cent probably paying money but the games JUST came out and if they did have a review board of industry pros, then they had near completed copies of the game.
Contrary to what some think, the Gamecube is a very powerful system and pretty much neck and neck with the Xbox. Resident Evil 4 has every right to stand next to HL2 but Quakr 4? Gimmie a break. The BIG difference between Q4 and HL2 & RE4 is tha GAMEPLAY. Quake 4 is while pretty...is just like Doom 3...a tech demo.
Jay @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Spike TV? sounds like something aimed at the 'gangsta' wannabes. im guessing anyways, seeing Lumines do better than Mario Kart or Advance Wars DS.
So glad i've never heard of it :)
Rob @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Surely if King Kong and that Ecko game are in there, it wasn't too late to include Mario Kart DS as the handheld game of the year. Cos let's face it, it owns any other handheld game. And even so - Lumines? What about Burnout or Advance Wars? Ah well, seeing the amount of EA games in there, we know it was well funded.....
Still, WOW was well recieved. And no shit about it being the most addictive game.
cool dude @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
hahahahahahahaha. lumines is probabdly the worst handheld game u could get. gta lcs, twisted metal head on, ridge racer, nfs rivals and even mariocart for the ds is far far better than lumines.
jago @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Have you played Lumines? NFS Rivals has horrible driving controls, GTA: LCS is basically a PS2 game, Twisted Metal could've been an awesome internet game (but it wasn't.)
A game doesn't need flashy graphics or complicated controls in order to be good.
cool dude @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
lol lumines just reminds me of tetris and bores the hell out of me. and it really doesnt matter if gta lcs is a ps2 game on the psp. thats actually a good thing because that means the psp is able to play games just as good as the ps2. and easily gta lcs and socom fireteam bravo are much better than lumines.
Sam @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
"thats actually a good thing because that means the psp is able to play games just as good as the ps2"
no, that's a bad thing, a portable stystem needs something different, it needs a whole different game play. especially a game like GTA, are you able to play a game like that for 10 minutes while in the metro? no. also the fact that it'll take you 3 minutes ( i'm not egsageurating in the slightest) just to turn on your psp and load the game doesn't help...
skibble @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Yeah, why wouldn't Gaming Horizon report the winners for Best Gaming Blog? That doesn't make sense in the least. Oh, wait...
cool dude @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
it really depends on what u like. when i bought the psp i wanted sumthing liek the ps2 but for places like the car and for times that are long n boring when i cant have a ps2 and tv to play games on.
Sam @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
yeah, i guess.
James Montagna (Mario Kart Drift Squad) @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Where's the Nintendo love? Pretty lame awards show, I say.
san @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Resident Evil 4 deserves everything it gets. But I wonder what if any methodology exists here for judging games. Although what if any methodology exists for choosing the Academy awards? The members of the Academy vote on it, I believe it. Yet AMPAS is venerated so we give it much attention.
And if Spike TV announced the press category (web site, news, blog) of their awards at the taped event, they didn't list them in the press release. http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/11-19-2005/0004219778&EDATE=
No press category winners were included in the release.
JohnnyCashAK @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
"Contrary to what some think, the Gamecube is a very powerful system and pretty much neck and neck with the Xbox."
Are you on crack, or did you not read the interview with Nintendo's president back when the GC was first released, in which he stated that since there was no way the GC could match the power and specs of either the Ps2 or the Xbox, their strategy was to court the younger player since they knew full well they would be mostly ignored by the more serious older gamer. The cosmetics of the system as well as the majority of early releases for it reflect this philosophy. Don't get me wrong, they've done a great job turning things around with games like RE4 and pushing every spare clock cycle worth of power out of what they have to work with, but spec wise the GC is closer to the N64 then the Xbox.
PSP is a piece of crap. I bought one the day it came out and when I got tired of playing lumines (the only good game to come out at release) I sold the damn thing on ebay for more then I originally paid for it.
Yellow Texan @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
10.
"no, that's a bad thing, a portable stystem needs something different, it needs a whole different game play."
What about the GameBoy Color it was pretty much a portable NES? Is it a new gameplaying experience? GameBoy Advance which is pretty much a portable SNES. Both Gameboy systems have pretty much the same game experience as their console counterparts. The Gameboys both have ports and sequels to the console games ala Super Mario Advance series, Zelda, and such. A portable system doesn't have to contain a "new" gameplaying experience. There is reason why they're called "portables" not a "system that lets you have an unique gameplaying experience on the go."
The PSP also has a standby mode so don't have to wait to game to reload for several minutes. You can just resume the part of the game the last place you turned off the machine.
LSSLAVE @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
You seem to forget Nintendo ALWAYS downplays their consoles, the Gamecube is much MUCH more powerful than the PS2, and the difference in graphics between the GCN and XBX are barely noticable.
You can not claim it is like the N64 when it is graphically superior to the PS2..
Smash Bros Melee you can see the stitching on Marios coveralls... you can see cloaks billowing in the wind. The graphical power of the gamecube is exceptional, but remember graphics dont matter, the gameplay matters, and Nintendo always wins there
Invader Alex @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
WTF!!!
How is the PSP a breakthougth!!!
The PSP is pretty much like a palm with a CD-drive!
The DS is more of a break thought because it use a touch screen for gameplay. The DS is more than breakthrough, it's revolution!
Did you notice that pretty much Sony won all awards! Nintendo won nothing!
And how is Lumines the best handheld game!?! Even Super Mario 64 DS is better!
I'm a Nintendo fan, I have nothing against Sony.
But clearly the show was a fix!!!!!
kilo @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
maybe they picked Lumines because it's the only PSP game that doesn't involve a car.
Billy Bob's Bills @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
The Gamecube featured a 485 MHZ CPU. The PS2 featured a 294 MHZ CPU. The PS2 did not feature a graphics card. The Gamecube did feature a 167 MHZ Graphics Card.
People say because of specs that the Gamecube is unsuperior to the XBox. Tell me, compare the load times from Xbox to Gamecube. Metroid Prime (1) always was voted graphics of the year compared to Halo (1), and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes was voted better graphics than Halo (2).
Jay @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
not to forget the GC had a PowerPC CPU. you know, where sony and microsoft are going now? the PPC is an insanely powerful architecture. hell im typing on my powerbook now as I render a video I made into H.264 with NO slowdown or lag or anything! all on a 1.5ghz G4. My 3ghz XP laptop would crawl.
you can argue specs all you want. Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime, the Cube has amazing power equal to the Xbox. probably just a little under, i dont think it has some of the texture techniques the Xbox has but then again it has a much faster loading time. So it wins for me.
g @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
bloody hell, ive become a bit of a nintendo geek since i realised their greatness, and i had no idea about the whole GC vs PS2 vs XBox specs, its lush to hear the Cube kicks the PS2.
As for PSP, its crap. i wanted one cos it looks nice, but im SOOOO glad i didnt buy one, id rather a second DS just incase i lost mine (sonic rush is brilliant). People spend nearly 300 on a PSP with a 1GB stick and what do they do? play mega drive roms ha! for 300 u could get a DS, nintendogs, Sonic Rush, Metriod Prime, Advance Wars, Mario Kart, Wario ware, Animal Crossing, and Kirby all brand new too, thats amazing.
JJ @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
The GC is not as powerful as a Xbox. But is is Dman close. The Power PC Archutecture is much more powerful than a P3, By far. All of the new consles are switching to a Power PC based archutecuter, dosent that say something? MHZ means nothing, it all about the archutecture. The Gamecubes GPU, fipper, is more powerful than the Xbox's Ge-Force 3. The only reason why the GC doesnt have as good of graphics as the Xbox is that the Xbox has far surpeir Developer tools, and the Xbox DVD's can hold much more than the GC 1.5 GB disks.
calthaer @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
I'm a fan of the cheesy and over-the-top action movies that Spike TV puts on the air, but these awards are a clear indicator that they should stick to TV and movies and stay out of video games, as they quite obviously do not know what they are talking about.
cool dude @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
# 25 is right. This game awards show on spike tv is totally off. Lumines is by far not the best psp game. There r better games than resident evil 4 and it doesnt have the best graphics either. the only o nes that are right is probabdly god of war for best action and WOW for most addicting. and dont u think they should wait until the end of the year to announce what game was the best of that year.
Matthew @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
You know, I think as time passes, reviews are going to become more and more meaningless. There's going to be so much variety, so many different experiences, that it's really going to be up to the consumers. Thus, Award shows, like this one, really won't have much meaning. That's what I'm starting to feel these days. Even movie reviews. You get these great reviews, and your like, "what, that movie wasn't that great." Or you watch a movie, and then check the reviews, and think,"what the hell are they talking about, I loved that movie." For the past year, for me, I've found myself relying less and less on game reviews. Does anyone feel the same?
nazuraki @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Best BREAKTHROUGH technology is the PSP?
Are you fucking kidding me?
These people are dumb as fuck.

Fred @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Hi, I'm an Xbox fanboy, but I wanted to play RE4 and Killer7, and after reading some reviews(the NGC versions have superior graphics and shorter loading times than their PS2 counterparts),I ended buying a NGC and I don't regret it.
1up_clock @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
And THAT my friends is called "Marketing towards idiots".
Edmund @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
I agree, Resident Evil 4 it is. I haven't played anything better this year. But the PSP for hardware? That's ridiculous. And to whoever it is that said the PSP was a breakthrough, go read up on the history of games. It's not.
Beeves @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Lumines got 'Best Handheld Game'?
What about LCS?
What about Meteos?
What about Advance Wars or Castlevania or Burnout or Mario Kart DS or Kirby: CC? Actually, I think Nintendogs should've gotten the award, seeing as it has been such a huge worldwide hit.
This is about as rigged as the Oscars, I tells ya. RIGGED!
/laughs maniacally
jago @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
JohnnyCashAK:
Are YOU that dumb? If you think that the GC is less powerful then the PS2 then you must be on crack. Just put the games side-by-side and you can see a difference. Just something is not large and bloated (ie Xbox) doesn't mean it is less powerful. Like others have said, the Cube is not as powerful as the Xbox but it is very close to it. The 2 major limited factors were the 1.8GB discs and the fact that developers wouldn't support it as much.
As for the Gamecube development kit...I have heard very little in regards to bad stuff. In fact the programmers I do know who work at development studios, put the Cube and the Xbox at about the same level. The PS2 on the other hand is another story...BUT...that hasn't prevented it from having some fantastic games. I forsee that the PS3 will have a similar hurdle.
As for GTA: LCS. Answer this for me...would you want to pay $250+the cost of the game to play something that won't match the PS2's quality AND have to worry about the battery dying on you?
The PSP's biggest problem is that developers (especially EA) are just porting PS2 games to the PSP thinking it will sell like hot cakes. Burnout Legends (while a fun game) is just a "greatest hits" collection with some major collision detection issues.
As an owner of Meteos AND Lumines...I can't really choose one over the other b/c both offer different styles and both are incredibly fun.
Also...what made the previous incarnations of the Game Boy defeat all it's competitors? The BATTERY LIFE...something the PSP has a slight problem with.
cool dude @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
the psp's battery life is fine. if your going to use it in ur house and it sstarting to run low you can plug it into ur wall and if ur in the car u can plug it into the cigarette lighter. but if your not near any of those things the battery will last a good 3-4 hours while playing gta lcs or any other game. it lasts even longer if ur playing games off the memory stick or listining to music or watching saved movies. the psp has no battery life problems.
32_Footsteps @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Okay, when you're bragging that your handheld gaming system can get up to 4 hours of play, you're already in trouble. Nintendo promises 8 hours and I've gone over 10 hours of gaming without charging.
Truth is, though, have we really had any breakthrough technology this year? I'm going to say no; everything out this year was just an evolution of what came before, and not a very great one at that.
Ah well... Spike was almost completely predictable. The only thing that took me by surprise was that We Love Katamari won something. It's like they had a brief period of lucidity before going back to voting for games that haven't even come out yet.
jago @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Wow you are delusional #34...
The point of a "portable" is to have something that you don't need to plug in every couple hours. I can go days without recharging my DS yes I have to recharge my PSP every other day. If you are gonna sit at home and play your PSP, then you might as well have not bought the thing b/c you are basically playing an overprice PS2.
I would love to play a Final Fantasy RPG on my PSP but since alot of those games stream the info off the disc, they would have to pull off a miracle to get more a few hours out of it.
Edmund @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
JohnyCashAK:
Everything you said about the gamecube being more comparable to an N64 and that Nintendo said they were going to appeal to kids and not hardcore gamers is completely fictional. Stop making things up, idiot. The Cube even had a survival horror title as a launch title. You are truly stupid.
Stephanie Chan @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
It looks like any other awards show. Chalked full of obnoxious, undeserved Hollywood pandering. I don't know why you guys are talking about the video games here in the comments when it looks like celebrities were all that mattered at the awards.
