"...for me less noice is very important - it's just bad karma to make a loud console. :)"

that doesn't even make sense, dude.

What are you guys talking about the XBOX being loud? The original XBOX is not loud at all. I have an XBOX from launch day and I can't even hear that thing unless I put my ear right next to the exhaust fan....

"This does not mean the individual cores are maxed out, though. For the sake of parallellism, you might need to use more than one core to do multiple things at the same time."

Call of Duty 2 is doing that...it's not using all 3 cores 100% but it is splitting up various tasks across the 3 cores.

In personal experiences, I have found the original xbox to be tolerable. The gamecube's noise is the lowest. The PS2(fat ones) are really loud, a whirring fan noise as has been described. can the 360 really e louder than the original ps2? If so, I'm disappointed as far as noise goes. As long as the volume is at a decent level, it should be fine.

Brian, I'm glad your Xbox isn't loud, but mine certainly is. It's not a launch day unit, was bought around 18 months ago.

Our unit sits on a hardwood floor and from our couch over three metres away is clearly audible (and I use XBMC to set the fan to the minimum of 10% of it's speed) even when watching our TV at the "regular" volume we use.

Well, My 360 is going into my stereo cabinet, which has a glass door. The glass is split and the cabinet has active cooling to keep airflow optimal(and it was made in 1994!). That way I can enjoy it noise free without sacrificing cooling options or use of the Media remote/drooling over the ring of light.

are you guys stupid? since when did a consoles noise affect gameplay or enjoyment? i have had every console back to the original nintendo and no console has ever made enough noise to bother me or distract me. are you guys using the thing as a head cusion as you play or something? i got my 360 almost 2 weeks ago and it isnt even as loud as a pc, and i have a dell wich are preety quet. it might be loud compared to say a gamecube, but its not loud enough to be bothersom. fan noise is a very stupid reason not to get a console and you might as well quit gaming in general if it bothers you that much because computers and consoles are more likely to get louder than quieter.

Eh..my laptops most likely louder anyway.. Acer Aspire 1802WSM for those that are interested. Has 3 fans in it and they are fairly noisy and run pretty much constantly.

I think it's obvious who the fanboys are (no pun intended) -
'just turn your tv/5.1 up' or 'my xbox isnt loud at all'

the suggestion to turn the volume up is all very well and good during the day, but I was trying to watch Father Ted then Kill Bill Vol.2 on DVD at about 2 in the morning the other day with my girlfriend, when she said,

'why is your machine making all that noise?'

Basically the Xbox is ridiculously loud. Yea it may not matter when you're in the middle of a gaming sesh, but if you ever need to turn the volume down, it's damn annoying. News that the Xbox 360 is pretty crappy news.

On the upside, it may very well change in the future. My original xbox is a 1.0 and it has two fans, one on the cpu and one in the back. Later versions, when the cpu die process shrank, was cooler and able to do without the second fan, hence much more quiet. The same should be true in some degree for the 360.

wtf....how the hell would the PS3 be quieter then the Xbox 360. Honestly x3 cores, verus the PS3 x8 cores. Hmm...what's going to need more cooling? Not to metion the small size the PS3 it's trying to be. That fan is gonna have to blow like a Boeing.

Well a blu-ray drive would rev at lower speeds, for one thing, and the seven sub-core design might be more power efficient.

Unless it's actually several times worse.

Hey the revolution will be quiet! Flash memory instead of an HD!

If they say its liquid cooled, they should not mislead. It uses heat pipe heat sinks, as do many air cooled computer cpu heat sinks, such as the stock cooler on an Athlon FX or X2, or the Thermaltake XP series. That does not mean it is liquid cooled. More specifically it has heat pipes with a refridgerant that turns into a gas when the CPU heats up and transfers the heat to the other end of the pipe distributing heat over the fins, then the gas condenses back to liquid and repeats process. So does that mean it is gas cooled? (retorical). Why cound't they say it is cooled by heat pipe heat sinks. I'm quite confident that the ps3 may also utilize similar technology, as is the trend in current cpus. They will not label it "liquid cooled" hopefully.

Hi Guys excellent discussion.

Ok I purchased one of the first XBox on release.
I thought it was loud then, so I opened it up and found it had an additional fan on top of the processor (this fan was removed in later models)

I replaced the fan with a heatsink which needed some modification to fit, this has made a huge difference and made it bareable.

My PS2 wasn't as loud as the XBox so I left it.
My Gamecube was perfect virtualy no noise.

When I received my Xbox 360 I was confident Microsoft would have adressed the noise issue. I got a shock when I started running games, it sounded like it was going to take off like a jet.

Housed inside my entertainment cabinet behind glass doors and holes cut at the back for ventilation, it is more bareable but still more noticable than the xbox.

I have also found the heat to be phenomenal I was able reheat my food inside the cabinet in about 20min.

Even my Alienware Area 51 7700 Notebook isn't as loud as the XBox 360.

I dearly hope Sony will work on the noise issue for Playstation 3.

Perhaps someone will release a Heat Pipe kit for XBox 360, which will reduce the noise?

Perhaps we all should contact Microsoft with our concerns about the noise, that way we the consumers are telling them to do something about it.

Hello again I almost forgot to mention some old technology which still after 15 years I have not seen applied.

1. There was a broom like device with prongs attached to the ends anything between these two prongs would be chilled so rapidly that oil based fires on a concrete floor would instantly be extinguished. One of the applications they mentioned was cpu cooling.

2. Noise canceling technology, Lotus created this many years ago. They canceled out the engine noise and replaced the engine noise with a choice of seletable Porshe 911, F1, V8 ... replacement engine sound.
The sound could of course cancel out all noise.
The application would be applied to noisy machinery and assembly lines.

Why is this (now) simple technology only found in headphones?

Getting off the subject
What happened to pendometer battery recharging in phones and wireless controllers such as XBox 360?
There is also a Russian technology which uses the users keystrokes and turns it into electricity, why don't we have this for for all our laptops,PSP, Gameboy...?

Looks like people still havent got a clue as to what is making the noise. Its not the fans, its nothing else but the DVD drive when it spins out at max. If you have a game in, it will spin out max. If you put a dvd in it, it will only idle since it doesnt need to spin at max. Its quiet as hell when viewing dvd movies, movies, browsing around in the dashboard etc playing harddrive games etc. But whenever you put a game in and launch it you will hear the drive spin out to complete madness. If your xbox does sound loud when in dashboard only and have nothing in the drive you should have it checked out. The xbox360 is quiet as HELL!! and whenever you play a game and find it too loud just turn up the volume a bit, or put on headphones or whatever.

I have to agree with some of you. I was fooled into thinking the xbox 360 was going to be water cooled in the more taditional sense, with pumps and everything because microsoft said that the system would be alot quieter, but it's just a standard heatpipe. A major disappointment. I don't consider that water cooling either. Once again microsoft lies about a feature of the 360. (It was supposed to have wi-fi built in......)

I have a fan not working on my 360. From the rear, the left fan is running, but the right fan is not. On my brother's 360, both fans run. Should I take it back to the store?
