The Spike TV Video Game Awards last Saturday gave the Best Breakthrough Technology nod to the PSP, an announcement we admit brings out a reaction somewhere between smug satisfaction and that uncomfortable, not-so-fresh feeling. First of all, the VGAs hasn't exactly been the most credible of award shows (Enter the Matrix as Best Movie Game of 2003?). And while some have said that this year's show "wasn't half bad", we can't help but wonder how a game like King Kong can be considered the Best Movie-based Game when it hasn't even been released yet?But since we love the PSP about as much as we do our middle children, the award is still much appreciated. And anyway, it definitely makes a nice addition to the award for Best Gadget of 2005 from Popular Science magazine. (By the way, thanks Spike TV, for giving the award for Best Handheld Game to Lumines, too!)
