World Cyber Games 2005 draws to a close
One of the
biggest events in professional gaming finished yesterday,
with the USA emerging as the world champions after some
extremely close matches and tense moments. Winning gold medals in Counter-Strike: Source and Halo 2
thanks to national representatives Team 3D, the champions only just managed to
beat Korea, who took second place with wins in StarCraft and Warhammer.
The victories reflect the seriousness with which these respective countries treat
professional gaming; while European nations were well
represented with teams such as 4Kings, victories for Europe were thin on the
ground. Perhaps this will change next year, as the 2006 World Cyber Games is set to take place
in
Italy.

I can't wait for the days when Pro Gaming will go the way of every other legitimate pro sport--causing minority groups everywhere to drop their HS educations to concentrate on their gaming so they can go pro and buy their "blingy things".
I want to see adds on TV with the "Michael Jordan" of gaming saying "when I'm fragging noobs, I like to drink [...] which gives me the edge I need to play 48hr marathons"...then he comes out with his own shoe and clothing line.
I want to see ESPN cover what the "T.O." of gaming said to get himself into trouble this time.
I want to see Terry, Howey, and the gang making sunday afternoon predictions on "who's gonna win this frag fest"
Yes people...yes...the future is now!

Then...much later into the future, the Pro gaming world is taken down when most of the pro gaming icons are all busted for steroid use, revealing a corrupt and disturbing pro gaming world. Youths everywhere that looked up to these "supermen" are shattered and jaded...seeking comfort in (gasp) books..NOOO!!

Haha - fears that day wayyy ahead into the future.
Expect *actual* professional uptake of the sport in no less than 5 years time since we still have a lot of people to convince that gaming is SO competitive (and fun to watch as a spectator?).

they compete in starcraft? little old, no?
If I kept playing it since 1998 or whenever, I think I'd be able to compete too :)

Korea is Krazy for Starcraft. They loves it. It's pretty much the best RTS ever, so I don't blame them.

Grats to the USA for winning Gold, and to the Chinese for winning gold in WC3: Frozen Throne.
