Joystiq Guide: PSP on the 360
Presenting the official Joystiq guide on getting your shiny toys to play nice together: your Sony PSP and your Microsoft Xbox 360. Just like iPod integration, this seemed crazy, but we are here to announce: it works great.
To the right is a lovely, svelte PSP next to the impressive 360 (with PGR3 faceplate). In between them, a simple USB to USB mini connector.
|
Once you have connected the two, all you need to do is put the PSP into USB mode. This can be found in the leftmost Settings menu. |
|
|
Once connected the 360 should recognize the device. Navigate to the Media blade on the 360 and begin by selecting Music. |
|
The PSP will be listed as Portable Device. Select it and
You can navigate through the PSPs (irritating) filesystem. The path is relatively straightforward though,
Portable Device : PSP : MUSIC.
For photo playback return to the Media blade and select Pictures. Again, select Portable Device and again
navigate the filesystem until you get to Portable Device : PSP : PHOTO. This should contain all your
photos. Mine are organized into playlist folders, and all images had been resized to the PSPs native 480*272.
Considering, they looked almost decent on the giant screen (see pic), so I imagine they would look even better on a
more normal-sized screen say, anything under 8 feet wide.
The menu system allows you to navigate
forward, back, stop, pause, and rotate your images. The Pictures playback should be identical for your USB enabled
digital camera as well.
Now, if only video playback worked

Why wouldn't it work? I'm amazed by the converage of USB devices interoperating with USB ports. The only reason it wouldn't work is if MSFT decided to not support it, which obviously they wouldn't do (even if though they are evil and sleazy).

Its nice to see Microsoft and Sony getting along. Now if the readers of this site could do the same thing it would be cool.

Amazing, the Xbox 360 can see something that works like any other standard USB storage device.

I don't think I've seen it addressed before, so I'll ask...
Has anyone tried using thumb drives / external USB2 hard drives with the xbox360?
Would be nice to be able to use an external 300+GB drive and not suffer the same "hard drive became too full too fast" situation that the Joystiq staff faced recently...

Can I link my N-Gage to the 360? jk :-D
Aryan @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
Well, i guess it wouldnt really matter if my PSP could connect to my 360, since when I picked up my 360 from walmart, it was DOA. It'll go through the dashboard, but locks up during games... Now I have to wait 10 more days to play my 360...

I want a PSP to hook up to my toaster.
DCFC Fan @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
So Microsoft's latest flagship, cutting edge product can communicate with a USB Mass Storage compliant device. So does my 6 year old laptop.
My question is whatever happend to playing the game and playing music on your stereo/pc/whatever?
Worst. Overhype. Ever.
Willb3rg @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
Poor Aryan man, but here in NZ we won't get it for MONTHS: adverts haven't even started yet.
Shit, I've seen you on, like, several blogs today. Go man, winge! Winge and complain and make yourself feel better. Hell, I'm not even being sarky, sucks to be you, you have my sympathy.
in5ane @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
Why have your photos resized for the PSP screen? All mine are 2mp from my camera phone, and the PSP scales them down so they still look bad ass.
Also re: Worst Overhype Ever comment. My PC speakers are no match for my home entertainment set up, and not many stereos I know come with USB connectors and a display for selecting songs. Quit moaning, it's a great feature.
chudgoo @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
Or better yet...
How long until we see a XB360 hard drive connector to normal SATA adapter...?? (external drive possibilities are endless!)
Has anyone inspected the contents of the 2.5" drive that comes with the $399 package? (or the standalone drive?) How is it formatted? What types of protections are in place?
I'd bet that it does the same sort of "locking" that the original xbox drive did...

Well, the stock(read:un-modded) PSP I have wont work with my XB360. I GIVE UP! I've tried every combination of reboots, cable unplugs and startups that I can think of and I cant get the XB360 to recognize the PSP at all! Is anyone else having this issue? Any help would be appreciated.
Oh, and I have a jumpdrive that it wont recognize as well. Hope that helps some of you out there on that topic.
pathfinda @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
.. yes, it sees my PSP, my Creative Zen Vision, my Sony Mavica CD500, but it dones't see my WD 40GB External HD...
