Wanton destruction of an Xbox 360

Some people will go through a lot in order to make a video to post on the Internet. After collecting donations, the creators of SmashMyiPod.com endured "55 hours of pain, cold, and suffering" in order to buy a 360… and immediately smash it up in front of fans still waiting to purchase theirs. No comments yet on whether it still works—after all, some 360s are crashing without having had sledgehammers pounded into them.

Looks like the creators have smashmyps3.com and smashmyrevolution.com lined up too, so presumably there's more next-gen destruction to come.

What a tit. this guy didn't think of being nice and donating to charity rather than spending his money on an Xbox to smash? hmm. and next he's going to break a Ps3 and Rev. inbred.

OK, that's just out and out stupid. Somebody should've jumped the guys before they smashed it and ran off with the xbox.

Because torturing fans waiting for hours on end in front of a storefront is hilarious.

Some could argue it is art, and a statement. I agree, it's silly and wasteful but hey, if people want to waste money, go right ahead.

You'd think that people would learn from their previous exploits that they are in it just to rip off the donators to his 'projects'.

With his SmashMyiPod stunt, he got $400 worth of donations so he could buy the top of the line iPod and smash it in front of people in the apple store. He bought the cheapest iPod ($250) and delayed release of the video in order to try to sell advertising space in it.

And he's quite the chicken about it. I believe he's the one who did the 'spoil harry potter' stunt where he spoils the ending of the latest book for a bunch of fans. He doesn't even confront anybody about it, he screams it out of a car as he drives past.

Honestly, if people want to give money away freely, try donating it to child's play instead of inflating this idiot's ego further.

Take a look at the photos. They include an Xbox360 Core System (the green box) yet they raised over $450 bucks. I'm guessing they pocketed over $150 themselves because the core is selling for $299. The funnier part is that if they sold it on ebay they would have made twice that. HA!

The people who donated the money would have been better of donating it to people who actually need money, for necessities like food and water. Thats my rational point of view.

Does anybody know if SmashMyiPod.com is funded by the Sony Corp.? :D

We as gammers have to be smart and play the best games. Competion is good the costumers and always will be. Being a fanboy is throw away good games. Only the brands should be worried with this console wars, we should be happy. The smart choice, in my opinion, is wait and see which console is better.
This fanboy war, although is fun to watch is a stupid war.
In 5 to 10 mounts will be 3new consoles in market at a lower price and tons of good games. I Will try to keep reading Joystiq to help me decide which is the better buy

According to them, the core IS 400 dlls, because CAD dollars are worthless.

Anyways, the smashmypod sucked, lets hope they actually TAPE IT RIGHT this time.

Anyone else notice the Best Buy PRP (Product Replacement Plan) brochure? I wonder if they purchased one for this and are planning on trying to return it. LOL "We opened the box and it was all smashed up like this; we would like a new one - here's our PRP."

If they wanted to make a statement about consumerism they should have set up a booth to give money to the Red Cross or Salvation Army at the same spot. That would at least make sense. This is just as silly as those guys who break iPods.

DG, you need to step back and realize that this world is FULL of things we see and don't approve of, and would never do ourselves. I think spending money on certain consoles is just as mindless as smashing one to bits. It's all different depending on where you're standing.

And to the person saying this money would be better spent with a charitable organization. That's fine, and you're right. But I've seen the same argument made to people who like buying games. Why waste 50 dollars on a hobby when you could feed someone for a week with that?

Because it's your money. And how do we know the people running the site aren't larger contributors to charity than you or I? You don't.

Grudge - I don't see how spending money on a console to play games is just as mindless and smashing said console.

The entire reason they did it was to piss people off, which is a pretty sad way to spend what to some is a weeks pay. It's just rather pathetic.

People can do what they want with their money, burn it if they want, it is their right. But doing so is more mindless and inconsiderate than using that money to buy stuff.

some look closely at the video, find out where abouts they live, then when they go to smash the revolution (and maybe the PS3), do what that guy said and fucking mug the geeky kid that does it, and put it on smashthatkid.com

I agree with you. My point is that it's all relative. I got blasted recently for having an iPod and a cell phone because they were unecessary luxuries when people were dying in NO at the time.

All I'm saying is that we all are coming from different place and while we see the difference between smashing a system and buying a game, someone who puts much more effort into charity would look at both scenariosand see wast in each of them. Know what I mean?

Grudge, I think it's especially heinous for a person to knowingly sell an empty Xbox 360 for $200, and then laugh about it later. That's not funny. That's criminal.

You guys all need to take a breather. He (presumably) waited the time in line, like everyone else who was committed to buying a console the first day. He paid the money for it. He has a right to the console, and has the right to do with it whatever he wants, just like you!

If he chooses to beat the crap out of it, who are you to say anything? What about the kid who waited in line and throws a tantrum, breaking the machine when PGR locks up? It's his right to buy and destroy the thing - you don't have to like it.

And @22 - I don't think he did it just to piss people off. I see it as more of a statement on consumerism, but that's just me. If that's what he intended -- actually, if EITHER of those are what he intended -- then I guess it worked.

If you're all so concerned that the money people donated wasn't put to good use, get a domain, start collecting money, and buy XBOXes for the underprivledged. Nobody's stopping you. Hell, I might even donate.

I can't fault this guy for anything. About 4 or 5 years ago I doused a furby with lighter fluid and torched it in front of a line of people trying to buy them on 'black friday' (day after thanksgiving for those who don't know). I'd be a hypocrite if I delared this wrong just because he's destroying something I want (and haven't gotten my hands on yet) now.

You're right, he can do what he wants with it, but I can also understand how gutted some unlucky guy standing out all night in freezing conditions to get one lose out to the jerk who wasn't even gonna use it.

The guy could have taken it home and smashed it up.

Although I really would not do this myself I find it a bit funny. The only reason is because they are saying it is only a hunk of plastic and is not that important. I had 5 on preorder at various stores in my area. So on launch day I didn't have to stand in line for them. Once I got them I took them to a couple of orphanages and childrens hospitals so they would have a merry christmas. The look on their faces was more of a xmas present thaNm I ever got before.

I think its a nice way to promote anti-consumerism, and it's sure amusing watching the 360 fanboy reactions.

I think it would be much more interesting if they slowly built up the torture to test the things durability. Example: The old drag-the-gamecube-behind-the-truck video that's been floating around the internet for years now, where it still worked afterwards. That was quality device destruction.

I could see myself doing that, just for the fanboy reactions. I bet it feels pretty good to smash something like that too, you know, take out all your stress and all.

If I was camping outside to get a console and saw someone do that, I would just laugh. It's not my place to get mad, they own it, and can do what ever they want with it. It's not like any of you haven't wanted to just smash something before anyway.

Geez, you people sure got your panties in a twist. Relax and chill. The xbox will come when it comes. No need to rush. There will be plenty for everyone. It's not like it's the end of the world if you can't get it on day one. It could even be a blessing in disguise. Who knows that if you had got it, it would have probably been a dud and then what ? More grief and dispair ? Heck I could imagine that you'll probably want to smash it yourself.
Go do something else, like chill out with your friends and exchange stories of your unsuccessful trip, go read a book or heaven forbid, get a girlfriend.
