While many Joystiq readers have been pleased with their new hardware purchase, reports are coming in of Xbox 360 system crashes, overheating, and some titles not playing at all. Crashing is believed to be due to hardware with overheating issues attributed to the hard drive. No word yet on misplays of some games, but Slashdot has some comprehensive links that look further into the problem.
While all hardware launches have teething issues, let's hope the trend doesn't continue, and the number of occurrences doesn't increase.

I have been playing my 360 for an entire week for at least 3 hours a day, twice that on the weekends.
No Problems whatsoever.
These overheating issues are easy to fix, and without going as far as MykR0 and removing the heatsinks to replace the thermal paste (email me if you want to know how though). The heating issues can be solved by using COMMON SENSE and not blocking the only way for the console to keep cool. It's built to keep itself running but only if you provide it the proper surroudings, i.e. no sitting it on shag carpet or on a television.
ITS A GREAT SYSTEM. AND AS OF RIGHT NOW, IT'S THE ONLY NEXT GEN WE'LL HAVE FOR THE BETTER PART OF HALF A YEAR. Seriously, a system is just as good as the people who actually play it, not the haters. I say every complaint should be followed by a Serial number for a 360 console to verify the legitimacy of that person's complaint.

...Yea Microsoft is losing money on every console but does'nt every company do..#95.It's not like the guy's going bankrupt...this is probally a good thing for them seeing as they can get rid of SOME money thats just taking up space. But n-t ways,i got 7 friends on my xboxlive friends list that have a 360 and none of theirs have messed up...just a ton of SONY fan boys trieng to make Xbox360 looks back...3 words...DISK READ ERROR.Theres probally gonna be less than 2% of Xbox360's that will be faulty, think of how many faulty PS3's there will be...I'm gettin gall 3 consoles about a month or 2 away from launch, hopefully all the bugs will be out.Learned the hard way not to but something at launch...my PS2 messed up in a month >.<'...while my xbox and gamecube works perfect. So for those of your planning on getting a PS3 at launch...don't --'.I think the only reason the PS2 sold so much was because of more than half of the people buying extra PS2's because there first ones had messed up after there warranty ran out, just had to throw that in there.HA!

Ever think about the video chip that runs XBOX?
its Ati and all i can tell you is that ever since i have been working on installing products from this company about 8 years or so now, i always encounter problems with them, there drivers are not stable in windows, there software also has problems, they will blame the problem on Microsoft drivers but they make these video chips, cards, and software for Microsoft in the first place, there incompetence to make there hardware work with there software is the problem with this company.
if you want to be problem free stay away from this company and any product that carries there software and chip.......

THE SECRET ABOUT THAT BIG PSU
THE SECRET ABOUT THAT BIG PSU
THE SECRET ABOUT THAT BIG PSU
Let me tell you the truth about the size of the PSU, in the begining the xbox 360 design has the PSU inside (if you see images of a disasembled xbox 360 you will see that has enough space for it), all the microsoft enginerers feel good, they could pack all in one small unit.
The problems start when they try the unit, and suffer overheating, this happend a few months ago, the solution (you know microsoft first create and then fix) was to pull out the PSU, since they cant pull out the CPU or ATI card, with no time to fix more design flaws, they make the PSU twice the size normal will be, just like an external CD is more bulky than an internal.
The sorprise come out when after pull out the PSU, they still have overheating, less than where inside, but still happends in some circunstances. But no time to redesign, or fix flaws, because the launch date was inminent. So microsoft release the fix design, and hopes all the buyers has air condition in their rooms, thats why they realese in winter, cold time. For spring and summer, they may recall, or have fixed the overheathing.
Thats why they send you a free-post 2 way for your xbox 360, cause you cant fix it by phone, they need replace your defective design unit, for one fixed one.

My 360 has Crashed 3 times now! not bad for the hundred times I have played it. First time it crashed was while I had it vertical sitting on tile, so I thought back to Gen 1 PS2 and vertical stand...said oh yeah heat is rising through system and causing it to overheat this was after 3 hours of gameplay. Next crash was a few days later it started to make sounds like someone banging aluminum sheets as hard as they could while I was in a multiplayer live game of PDZ, I rebooted it this time and therefore wasn't a crash but more a glitch. 3rd time it locked up when I recieved a message in a loading screen during PGR3. However I have played it for 14hours straight once while horizontal, so I dunno, it has issues but I can wait till they come back in stock and exchange it (I bought an extended warranty as I am familiar with the PS2 launch LOL).
