Nintendo's biggest blunder: sticking to cartridge games for too long (Joystiq poll results)

Maybe blu-ray is not our savior but only an xbox fanboy would worry if it is or isn't. I think BD's point about next or next next gen was that none of the NEXT GEN consoles are planning on using this holographic technology. There is a next gen console that WILL use blu-ray. That mean BLU-RAY is NEXT GEN. Now perhaps one of the consoles in the generation AFTER THE NEXT one will use holographic storage. That would make it NEXT NEXT gen. Right? Right.

As for your quote from "Hans Coufal", of course he is going to say it will rival blu-ray! Its a technology he is personally working on! As I'm sure the blu-ray people will say that the holographic tech is still years away in terms of reliability and application integration.

There's lots more where that came from but I figured that was plenty.

Digital distro will come for sure but its not an either or proposition and that is where you and mr. gates are both a little blind. The same shit was fed to us about paper in the nineties. Everyone was shouting about the digital office, and the paperless office. Everything digital. PDF, DOC, Bla bla bla. But. The "hardcopy" is never going to completely disappear. The question here is what form the "hardcopy" will take. You've got to be able insert something into your car stereo/dvd player to play your music/movies on the go. You've got to be able to bring content with you, or to a friends house. Thats the issue. While nice and certainly a part of our future, digital distro doesn't address the whole picture. Yes, thats how we will buy/receive content more and more, but after that we need to be able to move it around and for that we need a storage medium. Right now blu-ray looks pretty solid, but the future remains to be seen.
