Sure, if your Xbox 360 is crashing you could call up
Microsoft tech support and get your new toy repaired or replaced — or you could take design flaws matters into
your own hands and source out the root of the problem. And according to one Gamespot forumsgoer, apparently what's
causing these overheating Xbox 360 crashes isn't the Xbox itself, but rather that monstrous power supply. So what's a
gamer to do? Increase the airflow over the thing by getting it up off the floor, and suspending it in the air with
string — or if you're not feeling like making a trapeze act out out of the thing, stick it on an open box so it can
better emanate heat. Apparently this has been doing some good, but hey, remember that if it can't sit on the ground as
intended, it's defective, so make sure you call 'em up and get it sorted!

as much as i hate to admit that Chu is right, Nintendo IS known for using strongarm tactics as well as other unethical practices. just because we all love to hate huge corporations and Microsoft is an easy one to target doesn't mean it's right to single them out or label them as evil.

Hmm....I've been reading quite a bit into this, though I won't give out my opinion, as living here in Australia hasn't quite given me the chance to buy an xbox 360, and for that reason, I have no power problems to complain about.
Also, about making the console smaller and having it overheat-- are you forgetting the 2nd version of the ps2? It's much smaller...too bad that all it has in it are a few chips! By the way, I have that out on the ground, away from anything that would make it warm, and the sucker made be give up and trade it in, thanks to all the overheating it does!
It does sound like MS had a few design flaws. And it's their responsibility to fix those flaws. IF they don't FIX them, then they are operating UNETHICALLY. However, them making a mistake that they themselves would not desire (seriously, what's the toll this whole thing has taken on the xbox 360's reputation?) is, in my opinion, not an unethical practice. It's a mistake, something that all humans are prone to.
Should MS fail to replace each and every xbox 360 for free and leave its customer satisfied (maybe a year's free xbox live gold service), then I will be among the first to label MS as an ethically irresponsible corporation. And I agree, anybody that thinks corporations of this stature do not stomp on people's throats is kidding themselves. In this field, you either screw others or you get screwed. That's this 15 year old's two cents.
Oh, and one small thing I wanted to point out: a massive market with only a few sellers is not monopolystic. A monopolystic market is one with thousands of buyers and hundreds of sellers. A MONOPOLY is when you have only one seller (I know, the way the terminology is used is absolutely stupid). A massive market with only a few contenders is known as an OLIGOPOLY. Just thought I'd point that out ;)
Oh, and can we please abolish the term 'fanboy'? It's fast becoming the new 'noob'--the plague of the internets.

hey Sony and Nintendo boyz............Bill Gates is the largest single donor in the world for food and other such programmes.........he pisses on sony and nintendo type of donations...they aint even worth a few million $. and one more thing my xbox 360 is doing just fine without problems

The only reason why Bill Gates makes any charitable contributions is so that he can then turn around and use those same contributions as huge tax write-offs.
Does anyone honestly believe that he is giving strictly out of the goodness of his heart? Gimme a f*cking break.
Every real gamer should hope and pray that Microsoft falls flat on their asses. We don't need them becoming a monopoly like Wal-Mart and taking over the videogame industry. Just try to imagine how badly gaming would suck if there was only the 360 with no competition.

I'm sure you would know where he pisses as it sounds like you have his wiener lodged in your mouth.
Nobody should be defending bill gates of all people. Anybody defending bill gates or MS is a fanboy for sure. Its ok to like the xbox but its not ok to like bill gates. He is a bad man whether you like his products or not.

Nothing against you number 84, but that's for the original xbox.

Hey nathan67.
Are you playing on an HDTV? Do you have the right cables hooked up? I tried my 360 on my regular TV and the graphics are pretty much the same as the original xbox. They are a definitely better when I hook them up to my HDTV. Not a LOT better, but better. I will say I was a little disappointed but I think it will be the same with all the consoles this gen, at least in the first wave of games. Hopefully it gets better in the second wave when developers figure out the hardware, or this will be a long 5 years. :(

okay...no. its not a problem if your not stupid i dont care what anyone says. The xbox gets hot...okay? so they tell you not to put it in an inclosed area...it is not a problem, its what your supposed to do. Now...your car has a radiator...it keeps your car cool. Is that just a quick fix? no. its a vital part of your car. just like an xbox 360 and overheating, keeping it in a well ventalated area is just a part of having the console, your ventalated area acts as your radiator. if you have it in a well ventalated area LIKE THEY SAY IN THE OWNERS MANUAL you should NOT have a problem. what we have here is a bunch of ppl bitching over nothing. There is no problem. There, however, are stupid people who think there is a problem. Read the damn owners manual for once...they say it in there...sure microsoft is out for money, who isnt? you have a job? your out for money. great. i dont care. I dont think there is a problem i just think ppl are amazingly arrogant and dumb.

Yes, but would you buy a car if it said in the owners manual to only drive it on days where the temperature is less than 75? Hell no! Thats because you expect you should be able to use your car on any normal day. Or what if the cars manual said it could only be driven on 2 lane roads, but no 4 lane roads. You could complain because cars SHOULD BE DESIGNED to be driven on any normal road. Just like an entertainment console should be designed to be able to withstand being put in an entertainment center. Well thats essentially what MS has done with the 360. They made a car that can't be used the way cars have been used for years. That my friend is bad design, pure and simple. Your analogy is a good one but you just didn't really apply it correctly because it actually proves the opposite of what you are saying.

well I have to say my Xbox 360 is working perfectly because I haven't even bought it yet lol. The thing is with this whole overheating thing is we only hear a one-sided story. Which is " my peice of crap Xbox is overheating". We don't hear that they are being stuck in some closed up entertainment center , sitting on the carpet or whatever. Of coures its going to overheat if it can't ciculate air around it. The thing is heat will kill any electronic device. Would you stuff your 3ghz multimedia desktop in a confined area? Even the old N64's had a notice that said do not put the console on carpet or in confining areas.

Hey I have a sony media center pc with a prescott P4, running at 4.2, damn thing cost me a few grand, It overheated many times when I got it, because I just stuck it in a tight area, where my old computer sat, Ironically, it had the same clock speed of my origanal xbox, that thing didn't over heat once, but my new computer did, that is until I built a new, more open hutch to store it in, I'm not saying to build anything special for the xbox, but how about putting it in a more open space, because My 360 is sitting right next to my computer, and it hasn't over heated once.
and anyways, how many people on this board actually have a 360, and how many are just complaining about something they don't even have, and also, how many people on here that say they have one and so does their friends, how many of you actually have one? most people that I come across complaing about the 360 don't even own, nor have even played a 360.
and who the fuck really cares about the shoddy business practices a company does, if you were part of said company would you be here complaining? or would you be sitting in your penthouse playing with the money you just made by crushing some small, barely able to compete, business?
Who cares what Nintendo,Sony, or even Microsoft does in there spare time, we are the ones who benefit, wether or not its a PS3, X360, or a revolution. just remember you reap the benefits. they lose the money, and eventually maybe make money.

Hmm.. I bought my XBOX360 @ Zero Hour- I got a ticket last minute and was able to go. I have to tell you that I have not had any of the overheating issues with the unit.. Yesterday I played 3 different 360 games for about 3 1/2 hours total and I touched both the power brick and the 360 itself and it wasn't hot at all; just barely warm. It is strange that there are complaints over the heating issues since I, nor my friend's 360 have not been having overheating at all.. I have not experienced any freezing screens either; there probably was a faulty shipment tho and/or some people are creating something outta nothing too.
I just wanted to say that as I was driving back with the 360 in the passanger's seat, I had to make an abrupt stop and it fell off the seat onto the floor- My body froze! Yet fortunately nothing happened to it and nothing has happened yet.
For everyone who thinks this is XBOX 1.5- I would have to strongly disagree.. I have the xbox and the ps2 and the 360 visually blows them BOTH outta the water, seriously.. Granted I have the 360 hooked up to my HD Plasma by way of the VGA connection and it really is beautifully-widescreen, succinctly-clear and the frame rates have been outstanding. This is based on my own experiences and it has been a quite positive gaming experience.
I am also definately planning on getting my PS3, since it will also be in Hi-Def.
I am hoping that all of those of us who are either getting or have the 360 and eventually the PS3, actually have or will have an HD set to watch it off of, cuz if you don't, really what is the point?? Seriously, save up for the HD TV before you invest in these next gen consoles, you really can tell a difference between regular TV and HD.

must say, you HAVE to be prepared to be virtual-guinea pigs (ok, hamsters? in the states?) buying the first xbox360 off the production line.
clever folk wait for round two hardware revisions and the associated price-drops.
you crazy yank nuts!

I'm going to make this short and sweet. no matter how much a company plans, prepares, and tests, there will ALWAYS be issues once the product hits the market. nobody's has ever created a product without somesort of a bug that had to be worked out. the only reason you have even heard about these issues is because its the x-box 360. nobody cares about all the dvd players, computers, tv's, mp3 players, and everything else that has been sent back because its was defected. all eyes are on the 360 and thats why you notice. bottomline is that as a consumer your experiencing something that happens to everyone at one time or another when purchasing new tech hardware. microsoft didnt make it to where its at today by making crap. and if you dont believe everything im saying just watch the PS3 release and after about three weeks see if you can find a site like this. i promise you it will be there. thats just the way it is.

Your all a bunch of whining, back stabbing, idiotic, brainless, no-tech, know-it-all morons. Try getting a life instead of spending 3 hours whining about a stupid power supply. If this is all you have to worry about in life then I suggest you quit jacking off and get a real hobby. Dumb a$$es.

Ok. I by no means want to add to either side of this whole debauchery of who's company is more evil... less evil, etc.
But I will say that-
Yes. I do own a 360.
Yes. I absolutly love it.
Yes. My brother loves his too. As does a dozen other friends who own one.
No. Not one of us have any issues. None what-so-ever.
We all use the 360 to chat with one another, and all while going in and out of games and movies... all doing our own thing.
Yes. We love it.
No. I don't think there's a problem with the launch. Yes, I'm sure there really are a select few that did in fact ship with issues. This is unfortunate. They are working with those that have issues, and are fixing the problem.
Call me a fanboy. I don't care.
I wonder if those that are bitching even have a damn 360. I've heard all these people bitching that there is a problem... when they don't even have a right to chime in. I do believe the numbers of defective units out there are <3%. I also believe that those who think otherwise are uninformed... or misinformed.
On the matter of heat. Yes. This damn thing gets hot. Yes. I'm sure some are over-heating. I also bet that there are probebly both over-heating issues due to a faulty unit, and due to bad placement. The PS3 will do awesome things too. It will also, pump out a shit ton of heat just the same. So don't act like you didn't know this is coming. If you all want powerful machines that dazzle the senses... they're gonna generate HEAT. We can't escape the laws of physics on this one.
Those that say "There is no excuse for this not be able to be placed in an entertainment center" are absolutly right. Good entertainment centers. But even entertainment centers can very in effectiveness. Some get air better than others. Some entertainment centers are not designed well... no matter how much you like the way they look, and are NOT worthy of housing expensive equipment. Xbox or otherwise. It makes you sound like one of those dumbasses that buy one of those aweful desks that house the computer in a completely enclosed space with a door in the front. Open the door, and a heat wave hits you like you were baking brownies. That is a poorly designed desk too. The user that melts their vidcard or cpu cause they wanted to use their pretty desk should be shot just as quickly as one who wants to use a shitty entertainment center, or make shitting judgment one how they use it, but then bitch about the results. I think that all this bitching and using blanket statements "This is all good" or "This is all evil" are just plain horseshit.
Please understand who's comments it is your reading. Everyone's a little bit different kind of asshole than another.
I think that those that want a reason to bitch... about anything. Sony. MS. Nintendo. Grapefruit. ANYTHING. I think if they want a reason to bitch they will find one.
I also don't think any of us will change anyone else's mind on the matter. It seems that if you want one, you'll get one, and you'll have your own reasons as to why.
If you don't want one... don't f**king get one. I'm sure you'll have you're own reasons why as well. But make sure those reasons are educated. Not angry and misinformed. But if you're gonna be stupid dicks, and bitch just to bitch. Fine. I didn't want to run into your punkass on XBL anyways. ;-)
Cheers.

Easy fix. I bought a white lap top cooler with dual fans that fits the exacts spec of the 360, if it was to sit horizonally. It's great because, it plugs in with USB 2.0, which will shut off when the 360 shuts off, and also has 4 additional usb ports built into the cooler....
Now, Now, I know what the anti 360-pro P23/Revolution fanboys are gonna say....why pay an extra $30.00 for a device that makes the system work the way it should in the first place. Well my pale, overweight, womenless friends...if you are able to afford a XBOX anywhere close to launch date or there after, you can easily afford an extra 30 bones for a quick fix. Now, as for the power brick getting hot...that's a whole other animal. So, I just run up to the store every 15-20 mins and grab a bag of ice, and put that bad boy right on top. ;)

First, wow didn't know people could be like this about a msft product. A lot of passion on both sides.
Second, anyone remember the Dreamcast? No it didn't catch on fire etc. but it had similar timing to the 360. Granted diff products, diff buyers, but take a look at all of sega's releases. They brought the goods to the table first, and painted a big red target on their butts so sony/msft/nintendo could give it a firm kick.
Third, dude, if my car had a problem that caused me to have to stop every twenty miles for a "break" I would not consider it normal/in any way acceptable. Msft did not take into consideration what the diff between a console and a full fledged performance computer. You sell rocking compy's to enthusiasts who know why copper is better than alum. You sell consoles to the average joe who goes to walmart to get his oil changed.
Fourth, jury-rigged solutions are ok, but when this console is old tech it will hit the trash, cause nobody wants a cardboard box in their living room as a piece of furniture. 'scept that crazy kid with the Fedex box furniture.
Last, my NES still works, just burp on the cart. (Oh yeah, and those slip in cleaning carts DO work.) My DreamCast still works (And I still love the fight box.) My Genesis still works. (No burping) My SNES still works. My PS... well, maybe that mod chip was a bad idea. My SATURN still works (yeah I bought one, got suckered, but I still love virtual on, shoot me) PS2, still going despite all the controller tossing induced. XBOX still playing, and well cause I can't leave well enough alone rocking linux too.
In summary (cause I write too much) I've seen many consoles come and go. I see which ones get traded in, and which ones take up permanent residence on the entertainment center. Given its current state of affairs the 360 will be traded in for the next big thing, just like the DC when the xbox/PS2 tag teamed it. If they clean it all up with some firmware, or other techno wizardry it stands a chance.
The PR damage is done. MSFT you have to win hearts before minds. Make people feel good about your product and you can still stay in the game.

Oh yeah to the guys who say every launch sucks just like this, well ya know... Let's take us all the way back to when computers plugged into tv's, and for games well in some of the more popular (geek) magazines of the time had code for your own games, you entered it yourself.
The earliest stuff you soldered together (that was before me) and if it didn't work you could call the manufacturer and they would help you, clarify instructions and sometimes ask you to ship the unit to them and they's ungoof your goof, least that's what my dad's exp. was.
So, no launches aren't all this bad, but anything that gets big like consoles have, well you lose what made the scene.
Ya know, the diff between underground and pop.
In the meantime, sit back, have a cold one (soda, beer, wine cooler whatever.) and wait, those sweet, sweet wafting smoke nades will look the same a month from now, and any issues will either be fixed, or clarified. Fanboys will grow hoarse, buzz will settle to a hum, and the console will be probably be 50 bucks cheaper. Not to mention more games/better games.
And yes believe it, better games are coming, no one can fully utilize a console's power until 6 months in, or even a year. Don't believe, look back to other consoles.

This has been true for all the console releases I've taken part in. Pull out some of the PS2 launch titles, look at the graphics and gameplay. Now pull out Gran Turismo 4, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shadow of the Colossus, Something new. Look at those graphics and compare. You can do the same with the Xbox 1. It's well understood by gamers and other tech people that the games won't reach full potential until the last year of the console's life. The year before Xbox 720 or whatever come out, the games will have a now unimaginable quality in graphics. It can only get better, and it will.

Also, I should have mentioned this in my previous post, as I don't really like to double post.
Both sides make good points. I'm not going to take sides. I want a 360, I'm a graphics whore, and I like gameplay. Buy a system based on gameplay, not because it's made by X company. I've loved Nintendo since I got my NES. I will probably buy their Revolution because they put out games that I like that aren't on other systems. I also like their innovation with the touch screen (DS) and their new controller thing.
Anyway, new technologies always have bugs. Someone made a point earlier that new technologies have bugs, and Xbox 360 is getting all this bad rep because it's been awaited so much and that everyone has been watching it. I do not know how many units are actually defective, nor do I really care to know unless it's some obsene number. Bugs have been fixed in other systems. Bugs will be fixed in the Xbox 360. PS3 will most likely have bugs, which they will fix after the release date.
On the other hand, The console should be designed in a way so that it can be treated as previous consoles by putting them in entertainment centers. However, you shouldn't put it in a poorly designed entertainment center either. High end electronics need high airflow to keep cool and properly functioning. This is why they make pc cases with so many fan ports. I've seen a cubic case, 18 inches on each side. the picture wasn't incredible, as it only showed 3 sides. The front pannel had 4 fans. The top pannel had 2 fans. One side pannel and the top pannel, and the other side pannel each had a window. I think there was also 2 fans in the back. 18 inch cube is a huge airspace, and more air inside the case allows for better cooling.
Now I'm just rambling.
BOTTOM LINE:
-bugs expected and will be fixed
-should be designed so it can be treated like previous consoles.
-gameplay should be regarded as the most important element in video games, not the hardware specs.

- I read through about 2/3rds of the comments so forgive me if this has already been covered but:
Suppose the entire Xbox team earnestly believed that the majority of purchasers would place their unit in a 'special place' (read 'altar') like the very top of the entertainment cabinet (where the cable box / modem would be now) and where airflow considerations are moot.
-Just a thought.

You're all kidding me right?.....
So if some kids were to take their new laptops and put them in a 'stereo' cabinet and they overheated (which they would if they were running alot of apps), its Dell's fault?....
#14, u bought a dell, hahha, a fucking dell.

In my case the xbox 360 out of the box had a slight problem which was located the hard drive( I could`nt delete saved play list without the system crashing ) but I figured a way around this( by replacing existing playlist only) but it seemed to be a prelude to other problems like the entire system crashing and the three red lights flashing continuously.
I called microsoft and they will replace or fix my 360 for free, Now while this is fair and quite noble that does not excuse the apparent disregard for quality control on MS part. Remember this is a MULTI BILLION DOLLOR COMPANY they have the resources to ensure that a product of this importance should reflect that companies dedication to it`s fan base unless the company has become so successful that the consumer is`nt as important as they use to be. (MESSAGE!) I think that`s a shame I liked the technology in the xbox and the 360 but sadly I know that this will be the last Microsoft product I will buy ( I am devoted apple guy but the have`nt developed a unik based game system as of yet) It`s like they don`t care if sony continues to be on top of the video game mountain, GEEEZZ what a way to start a new era in HD gaming.....
