Square Enix's Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, developed by Level-5, has finally made its
way to North America, bringing its proper series' moniker with it (Dragon Quest, not Dragon Warrior).
Sometimes you don't gotta reinvent the wheel to make a smooth ride, ya kna' mean? Dragon Quest VIII has
8-bit nostalgia written all over it. And despite one nostalgia-hater (ummm… netjak), the critics are
loving Dragon Quest VIII:
-
1UP (95/100) - "[The] reason I know Dragon Quest VIII is 90 hours long is because that was my time when I finished it. It's that good."
-
GameSpy (100/100) - "[Dragon Quest VIII] shows us that radical rethinking isn't always the key—that developers can preserve the look, feel, and soul of a series across decades."
-
Worth Playing (95/100) - "There's also a powerful shot of nostalgia for folks who grew up on NES Dragon Warrior... All told, Dragon Quest VIII is one of those rare games that can be fairly called a masterpiece. "
