2D Metroid Dread cancelled
While DS owners are anticipating Metroid Prime: Hunters and playing the unique Metroid Pinball, it appears development on that platform's 2D Metroid Dread has been cancelled. While it's true that the game's only previous hint of life was a pre-E3 list, and it never even made it there, fans were still looking forward to a side-scroller running on the relatively powerful DS hardware. With the GBA reaching end of life, and the Prime series landing on a handheld, will there be any room left for an old-school Metroid?

I don't think so.
Anyway, it'd be great if tehy maid a side scrolling 2d metroid for the DS in the style of Dawn of Sorrow. That would be awesome.
Rollin @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
Supposedly, this was only in the planning stages and canned months ago. But anyway, i think they might have shelved it for next year or something. With Hunters using wifi, they prob wanna focus on that without shining the spotlight on some 2D Metroid bread and butter.
Mark Korsak @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
haha i actually love the 3d metroid MUCH more than the 2d ones. I was never into metroid too much, and i heard so much hype about the 3d one Prime for GC, decided to try it out, and loved it. I think the primes are so much better than the 2d ones like fusion and super metroid

Damn, I heard about Dread getting cancelled like 2 months ago. Not exactly news... :|

um... it isn't official until Nintendo says so, everyone's just assuming its cancelled because there haven't been any new info releases, just because there arent any new screenshots or anything it doesn't mean its cancelled.

I just played through Metroid Zero Mission and am deep into Metroid Fusion again (third time through). I love many 3D games, and Metroid Prime as well, but in all honesty, Metroid is best in 2D.
It reminds me of synthesizers in the late 70s and 80s. Everyone thought that live instruments were dead and that live musicians would become obsolete. There was a time when every label producer *had* to have synthesizer in *every* production.
In the same way, we're still sort of in a time where game producers irrationally want to make *every* game 3D, and that if the hardware for 3D is there, it's just considered a bad decision to make game in 2D. I sincerely hope we get over this--there's a sort of gaming that 2D *is* superior to 3D for, and Metroid is one of those games that simply cannot be the same in 3D.
Can games like Prime work well? Yes, but it works well precisely because it fulfills the requirements of 2D gameplay mechanics, e.g. in the precise jumping. In that way, it works *despite* 3D. Don't get me wrong--I'll take Prime, happily. But the GBA Metroids are the apex of 2D gameplay, and no matter how good Prime is, how pretty the graphics and clear the sound is, controlling in 3D in ANY game is more difficult and less intuitive than controlling in 2D.

I've never been into first person shooters. When they took my beloved Metroid and turned it into basically another Wolfenstein 3D with fancier graphics, it broke my heart. Now they're just kicking 2D while its down.
Vinnk @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
Thanks for screwing up the margins with your over-use of "o's" guys. Classy.
CaMBoB @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
GBA life ending? Ummm... so are you officially reporting that Nintendo isn't going to support the Micro? Duh.
Kenofthedead @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
The Micro is a small time event, it was never the new GB, just another GB for those who love smaller technology.
According to Nintendo, the Gameboy Advance is still being supported and will continue to have games produced for it for at least another year's time (at least until early 2007).
I don't mind that much on this un-news.
A game that was never announced was not included on a list of games being made, shocking!
Now Nintendo could still make another 2D Metroid game, and most likely will. They do like their high-selling games and 2D games for the Gameboy Advance still sell well.
Sockatume @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
*thinks*
Haven't Nintendo been saying - for a very long time now - that the DS would not be replacing the GBA line, and another "normal" handheld would be along in near future? Maybe the project's not canned. Maybe the team's been shifted to developing a New Gameboy launch title.
jago @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
Wha? Woh...I've never heard of this game at all...and I've been goin to E3 since 1999.
Man that would've been awesome...but they probably cancelled it for good reason.
Jay @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
The GBA isn't going away yet is it? They'll only stop GBA games when GBA2 comes out, and even then they'd still be making games for another year or 2, look at the GBC!
BlackYoshi @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
Glitchcog, I doubt you've even played Metroid Prime if you think its like Wolfenstein. It has lockon, and very few of the enemies fight back a la Space Pirates (with guns). MP is one of the least FPS-like First Person Shooters. Its more of a first person action/adventure.
GlitchCog @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
Yeah, I know it's the least FPS-like FPS, but it's still a FPS. I just don't like them. Point and shoot, point and shoot, point and shoot, roll into a ball for actually interesting gameplay, point and shoot, etc... I really liked Metroid until it became first person. I have no interest in the genre. I liked the first Doom. Since then I'm afraid I've grown weary of aiming for space pirates.
Space Junk @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
This has been one of my worries about handheld systems getting more powerful. Once you can do 3D on portable systems, will anyone still make 2D games? I like Metroid Prime and all, but I hope we don't have to lose 2D Metroid games because of it.
Joseph @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...
maybe they canned it to port the release onto the gba? With the micro being released, I'm sure Nintendo is going to have to be more involved in the little console (though having FF 4, 5 and 6 announced probably doesn't hurt the line-up at all...) I don't think I would be disappointed at all seeing another 2d Metrid of the GBA, or another Zelda or Mario for that matter, it's a great platform for these types of games. :)

Good people of the forum, I shouldn't worry about it.
We will see another metroid title in 2d when I don't know.
Question to EVERYONE, how would all of you feel for a metroid 6 to appear on the revolution ...
... in 2D. Now before I get jumped on in this chatroom just think about it, it would be the difinitive metroid game EVER .
* An actual sequel to metroid fusion.
* An ENORMOUS gaming area, were talking MASSIVE here. : )
* Graphics like you wouldn't believe, and am talking beautiful graphics here.
* Power ups and special moves like you wouldn't believe, ON THE REVOLUTION : )
* A totally immersive storyline that blow away anything that we knew of the metroid universe.
I've always been curious how a metroid game would be represented in 2D now with the technology given.
and the funny thing is it would work because it will be from nintendo ( bias I know but DAM) It would really work.
I need ALL your thoughts on this folks, Holla back! : )
ClaudeLv250 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
It's a rumor guys. It is by no means official.
Xomphos @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel like I want to cry. :(
I LOVE Metroid in 2D. It is the BEST in 2D. Don't get me wrong, but 3D metroid is good, but 2D is da bomb! Ah Metroid Fusiona and Zero Mission-the memories they have given me.
Now, what I wander is, what concept art/screens/beta of the game will we probably never see that Nintendo has locked up in it's vaults with a magical leprican gaurding it?
Mr nuclear @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
I think we should pile on the pressure on nintendo to re-release metroid 6 .... METROID 6 ....
OLD SCHOOL : )
...ooooooo... no. @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
Mr nuclear, do you mean like SSBM? (which was 2D with 3d graphics).
Mr nuclear @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
