Everyone needs to stop defending the 360 by calling people an idiot.

I would like you all to think about this, many years ago portable CD players with skip protection where all the rage. So how did you show off the skills of your new CD player to a friend? You shoke the hell out of it, you spun it around in circles, you TILTed it to and fro. Did the disk scratch, no. Locking Mechanism. 360 must not have one. Too bad. For a system that should be deisgned with the idea of taking it with you on occasions the 360 has failed. I've seen a PS2 be laid down with a disc spinning, what happened, the game went on.

360 was rushed to beat PS3, all you Fanboys won, but look at what it got ya.

Blu-ray discs are not live DVDs or CDs they are in a plastic casing (like PSP UMD's) and they are more scratch resistant. Also, since they are in a case that holds them in place, they won't flop around in the drive like a DVD, so you wouldn't get scratching from changing a PS 3 from horizontal to vertical when playing a Blue-ray.

One thing I've never understood about console software media: If you ruin your disc, why do you have to pay a full $50-$60 to buy a new one? Don't they have a media replacement program? I mean, you're not paying $60 for the disc, you're paying $60 for the content on the disc. They should replace the media for a small S&H fee.

#56 Bestbuy aparently has such a program, but you'll have to pay a small amount of money for it. The solution is just don't damage the disc. It's not to take care of the things. I don't do this personally, but do some college frat boys use the 360 discs as coasters?

*sigh* I've had people bugging me from the moment I mentioned I was going to wait in line for a 360. I mean, some of the stuff these people come up with is just insane. "Don't buy a 360, you can't drop the xbox from 4 foot onto concrete without the power switch snapping lose!" Umm.. ok, and just how often does anyone intend to do that with their console?

Accidents happen, but no one complains to Ford if they decide to drive their car into a tree just to see what happens. No one ever expects a $30,000 device to withstand tortures it was never designed to, but they'll be damned before they feel cheated out of $300.

Anyone who throws their controlers around, kicks their consoles, jerks on the cables to knock it over... they seriously need to get some therapy. The worst part is, I've never seen a child act like that, it's always the "adults". They know better, and they deserve what they get out of it.

There is nothing more pathetic than watching a 25 year old gamer thowing a literal tantrum because they can't figure out the camera controls on a game, or keep pressing the wrong button and throw their controller across the room because it couldn't have been THEIR fault.

Repeat after me: It's just a game. It should be fun. Taking it serious just ruins the experience for me and anyone else around me. It's just a game.

LOVE D-Sking idea in general
#2
even new technology is made cheaply. 360 uses (i'm sure) the same ROM type as a PC, just like the original XBox. Well, actually the original XBox used a cheaper than PC ROM as most of the XBox's can't read DVD-RW or CD-R ????
#3
The guy that got a replacement from BestBuy when BestBuy was sold out of consoles...think about this statement. WHY WOULD HE REPLACE THE CONSOLE??? IT'S NOT BROKEN. He got the game replaced...sheesh
#4
You won't catch me buying a 360 anytime soon after reading all this. Unless somebody figures out a mod for it so i can put a better ROM drive in like my normal XBox.
#5
expanding on #2...product developers are cheap. very cheap. If they were to put in the little bearings to stop the yaw'ing of the DVD disc, it would cost them a tonne of money, where the few people that fuck up their own discs and are smart enough to return them, it costs M$ a few cents to give you the new media. factoring in say 1% of all games sold get scratched, and say 75% of those people are smart enought to exchange it, that still only 75 discs out of each 10000 sold. That is probably a 10:1 factor on consoles, so 75 disc at a manufacturing cost of around $0.05 (packaging included) compared to 1000 consoles made with bearings (an extra $0.01 / unit) is a manufacturing cost of : $10.00
so replacement discs : $3.75
better consoles : $10.00
savings per 10,000 games / 1000 consoles :
$ 6.25
manufacturing ratio of : 10000
* assuming 10,000,000 consoles sold
saving to Micro$oft : $60,250

......that seems worth it to the multi-billion dollar company of M$. why, cause they don't care if you...the consumer, gets screwed. If they save a couple bucks in the long run, they are happy with it.

my
$0.02

I just got my 360 airlifted to me in Iraq, with the inverter in my Hummer, I was playing PD0 when we came under sniper fire near Bagdad, the 360 took several rounds, when in the vertical position, and nearly scratched a disc... then on the way back to Dealta Base we were ambushed by several insurgent's with RPG's and again the 360 took the brunt and now I get a message from the system telling me to contact microsoft, what a flimsy piece of junk...BTW most of us have stopped wearing flak jackets, we just strap 2 PS2 front and back, much better protection.

Post 38, Jake: Your comment shows complete lack of thinking on your part. Reread what you wrote:

"I can roll my gamecube around, sometimes I get mad and kick it, nothing happens. It's called a good design. Walkmans don't scratch discs if you tilt them, and if you drop most, the actual walkman will break before it scratches the disc (well, with a good walkman that is)"

You say a good walkman will break before it scratches a disc? That's the stupidest idea I've ever heard. Consider this Jake, the average CD is about $12 to purchase. The average walkman is easily 2 or even 3 times that amount. So what makes sense Jake? Do we scratch a disc at $12 OR destroy a walkman at $40. You decide. Next time think about what you post.

#61 - He was making the point that it's easy to protect a from these problems, duh.

About the guy with the 16 controller problem, I used to go over to my friends to play Xbox and there were a few times we had 16 people playing at once. A lot of people had xboxes and 4 controllers and Halo/Halo 2, what we were missing was a place that had 4 rooms with sufficient space for 4 people and a TV. We had all 4 TVs in 1 room with covers hanging up to essentially divide it into 4 rooms. Not trying to blast on the 360, but it should have no problems....

No locking mechanism, wireless controller issues, (negligable) crashing, overheating, etc... Although most of you are happy with your 360s, I personally think Microsoft are making fools of themselves with the xbox 360.

This is off-topic, but First you ghave to deal with the overheating, so it has to be stored in the open.. no cabinets for it. Now we are at the point where we have a console sitting in the floor, probably vertically. There have been many occasionals when my Gamecube has nearly been tugged off the shelf (and a few times it has). It happens... people play video games, get excited, and the fact that they are attached to a console totally escapes them. For cripes sake, save yourself and lay it horizontally.. You don't buy a system to stare at it, so having it vertical or horizontal should not matter (aesthetically).

Think about this for a second. DO YOU REALLY THINK IT'S ACCEPTABLE THAT A CONSOLE CAN SCRATCH DISKS SO EASILY? I don't care if it says not to tip it in the manual. It's just not right that a little tip can cause such damage. Even my PC and my PS2 can be tipped (slowly, sure, but tipped none the less) and not cause any damage to the disks. The problem here is the bad quality of the drive.

Again, think about it. Do YOU really think it's acceptable for a console to scratch games that people payed 60 dollars+ for?

Seriously guys, this is stupid.
1st'ly to all of the Ps3 fanboys here- and sony have said this themselves- THE XBOX 360 AND THE PS 3 HAVE ALMOST IDENTICAL SPECS. Now shut up about it going after the PS2, its outdated and 2bh, overpriced. Now every console, since the SNES has had problems at launch. Oh yes, even the original PS and even some people precious PS2, hmm, what was it for- oh now i remember- scratching disks. Not rusing to Ms's defense or anything, but it even says in the damn malues- "dont rotate the console while the disk is spinning". Is this such a hard concept to grasp? Oh and i wudnt count on "Blu-ray" for the Ps3. At E3 this year, Sony, doubled all the Ps3 and its fabled "Cell processor" to make it look btr than the 360's. Ms was there with a working, playable console, Sony had a case and Nintendo had a Powerpoint presentation. For the love of god leave the "Ps3 0wns the 360" crap alone. It dosent. Take it. The Ps3 has a single 3.2 ghz processor, while the 360 has a 3 3.2 ghz chips. And its available now. It looks good. Not like a damn laminator (or fridge, depending on how you ask). Oh and just two more words- Halo Three.

There is another way to scratch a 360 disk, which is slightly different to the "tip over whilst playing" approach.

I have my 360 on a shelf, on the horizontal position. When re-arranging some cabling, I swtiched off the console (with a disc in it) moved it away from the shelf, then re-attached and powered it up. When I powered up - the disc got scratched.
So - if you move your 360, make sure theres no disc in the drive!
