Cinematical.com has digested (for non-subscribers to Variety) a
recent article that predicts the evolution of gaming consoles into home entertainment hubs, starting with the Xbox 360.
Variety's Ben Fritz suggests that movie studios, eager to distribute their content to stay-at-home gamers, will back
the Xbox 360 and the PS3 by distributing their content in formats that support these consoles. In addition, these
studios are beginning to open their doors to development teams in order to produce top-notch games based on their
films. Hollywood can no longer afford to ignore the gaming industry and the demographic (namely, young males) it
controls.
So will next-gen consoles become the mainstream link between television, the Internet, and out-of-home media? Will Xbox Live play host to a movies-on-demand service? Will Sony use the PS3 as a new means to distribute its film-based content? We've heard these ideas being tossed around for years. But is it now finally a reality?
