"I wonder how many more DS hand-helds people will keep buying as long as nintendo keeps changing the colour of the outside case...they have learned from Sony well."

Unless Sony's been doing multi-colored cases for hardware since before 1995, then Sony is the student in this matter.

1994-1996: Classic Game Boy released in "Play it Loud" colors (Black, Clear, Green, Yellow, and Red), plus a special Manchester United edition.
1996-1998: Game Boy Pocket eventually released in Grey, Black, White, Green, Red, Yellow, Pink, Clear, "Ice Blue," "Extreme Green," "Emerald Green," two Silver variants (one with a silver border and one with a black border), plus seven Japanese limited-editions.

1998-2001: Game Boy Color released in "Grape," "Teal," "Kiwi," "Berry," "Dandelion," "Atomic Purple," Clear Black, Clear Green, Midnight Blue, Ice Blue, Clear Orange, and Clear Blue. Plus eleven special edition variants, and six Pokemon variants.

2001-2003: Game Boy Advance released in "Indigo," "Arctic," "Glacier," Fuchsia, Spice, Platinum, Gold, Clear Orange, Midnight Blue, Black, plus eight special edition variants and four Pokemon variants.

2003-2005: SP released in "Cobalt," Platinum, "Onyx," "Flame," "Pearl Pink," "Pearl Blue," Emerald, Graphite, Gold, Pearl Green, Lime, Platinum/Onyx duel-tone, "Surf Blue," Blue Marble, two Camo variants, and "Pearl White," plus 21 special edition variants (including three NES ones, two Zelda ones, a Naruto one, a Kingdom Hearts one, a Donkey Kong one, a Boktai one, a Spongebob one, and quite a few others), and seven Pokemon variants.

2005: Thus far, the Micro has been released in Silver, Black, Blue, Pink, Green, plus a NES and a Pokemon variant.

2004-2005: The DS has been released in Titanium, Electric Blue, Black, White, Turquoise, Pink, Red, Teal, a different Pink, a very light purple, a limited-run light blue, gold, plus exclusives with wireframes of Mario, Bowser, Wario, Peach, and Yoshi, all in different colors, and one dark-blue one with Pikachu superimposed on it. Also, at least four custom-designed DSes have been sold to celebrities for large amounts of money (Jay Mohr, Poppy Montgomery, Alan Cumming, and 50 Cent).

Additionally, the N64 was released in Black, translucent purple, translucent blue, translucent reddish-pink, translucent orange, translucent green, translucent grey, "Extreme Green," a special Banana paint-job, Gold, and a special-edition Pikachu mold. Plus, the controllers came in a whole load of different colors.

And the Gamecube was released in Indigo, platinum, black, orange, "Crystal White," "Mint Green," "Copper," "White with Pinstripes," and 2 special editions.

Variant Rundown:
Game Boy - 7
Pocket - 20
Color - 29
Advance - 22
SP - 45!
DS - 16, plus 4 customs
N64 - 11
Gamecube - 9
