Scoring with PMS GibGirl: uber tips for Geometry Wars
We interviewed 31-year-old gamer PMS GibGirl with intent to uncover the secret behind her
fantastic top-10 score of 1,377,920 points in the Xbox 360 Live Arcade game of
Geometry Wars. She dropped a knowledge bomb on
us:
-
Take out snakes as quickly as possible - not only are they hard to kill, they block your shots with their bodies. I think they're the #1 most dangerous enemy.
-
Manage gravity wells - you don't have to destroy them all, but make sure to keep the number down, and know where they are so you know where the blue circles come from when you hear one blow.
-
Once the # of enemies increases, your goal should be to look for where on the playfield is safer then where you are, and try and get there - and remember that this is a constant task, you'll always be looking to get somewhere safer.
-
Learn to listen—each enemy makes a distinct spawn sound, and certain ones should be listened for. Especially the red horseshoe—it makes a rumbling before each run across the board. If you hear it, you know it's coming.
-
And finally, practice—learning to "read" the board and react fast enough to make use of it only develops from playing. I just happen to have spent a lot of time playing Robotron: 2084 [since the late '90s] and similar games in the recent past, which has helped.

After I posted this, I went back and gave GW a spin. I got a new personal high score! 595k.

I purchased the full version of this game and have recently become addicted to it. It is sad that I have spent nearly $1000 on my 360 over the past week including all the games and accessories and have found myself turning it on only to play Geometry Wars.
Funny thing is... I don't mean that as a knock on the available games... I truly enjoy many of them... there is just something about this damn game.
Must play... NOW!
vc @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
I don't think it's sad. I think it's awesome that there's such a compelling game in the Xbox 360 arcade.
What's sad is that this game has provided me with more real fun than most multi-million dollar titles on ANY game system.

Very true. There is nothing "sad" about it, as I said before. This really is a flashback to my childhood years of gaming (with my older brother's Atari 2600). Just like then I can try and try, play hour after hour, and I just can't hang with the elite players.
I really hope the 360 owners out there give this game a chance and realize it is well worth the 400 MS points you'll have to spend for the full version.
As or right now I can't even survive 60 seconds, without firing a shot, to gain the pascifist achievement! Grrrr.... it's killing me!
Literally! Well, in the game anyway.
vc @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
That achievement is pretty tough to get. It took me a while to nail it. I like that one.
I think they should also have an achievement for standing still for 60 seconds and only using the fire stick. That would be tough too!

Getting gaming tips from a PMS girl is sad :p
Whatever happen to "giving out tips on the msgboard" under a gender-less name? Internet these days. I don't see Joystiq interviewing one of the top-players in Battlefield 2 and asking for his tip, do you?
I want ugly mugshots!!!! Not the same ol' "tee-hee-hee" fist under the chin picture. What gives? Is that all they can do? How sitting back and feeling relaxed? Maybe a "I don't give a rat's @$$" facial expression.

This guy has it on the money. That picture delivers you the contracts to a multi-dollar gaming spokeperson...and probably a sucker punch in the face.
Fuzz @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
Can I get geometry wars anywhere else? I'd like to try it, but can't quite manage the $550.00(I'm in Canada, eh) for one game.
Dylan Greene @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
Any chance of posting a video achieving those super high scores?
Also, any tips for Mutant Storm Reloaded? PMS GibGirl has a top-10 score there too.
Blurrz @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
You two need a room!
vc @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
We'll interview the top players in any game, yo!
JD @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
thanx for the help
btw: have you seen the top score something like 2,400,000!!
absurd the highest I've gotten is 240,000
Gary Larson's publicist @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
MB,
Dude, who cares who is giving you the tips on this game? I don't care if it is a guy, girl, paralyzed monkey, or Kurt Vonnegut himself - a tip is a tip.
Just sit back and enjoy the goodness that is Geometry Wars.
Milton Bradley™ @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
@ #9:
I agree. But what ever happen to being "anonymous"? You can still send tips while being anonymous or having an unisex nickname/username, right? Or has that change?
I think it's the picture that's bothering me...plastered there like if it was selling something.
Dirty tricks I tell ya! Sex sells though.

Gary Larson's publicist @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
MB,
Agreed. In part at least. I would not support the idea of gamers getting their ideas/tips/feedback posted simply due to the fact that they have provided their gender... and it happens to be atypical of what the norm is perceived to be.
Very true.
Regardless of that... if that is what it takes to get a post about GW (and I don't mean Bush) posted, then so be it. We need to get the word out... this is a damn fine, albeit simple, game.
Charlene @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
She doesn't exist! And neither do I!
TxdoHawk @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
How can you people complain? She's kinda cute, and seems to know what she's talking about. How about interviews with a few of the clan members, Joystiq?
vc @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
We have one of the PMS Girls writing for us, actually!
I like interviewing gamers. More to come!
Rich @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
I am currently 33rd in retro on the 360 and this game is the most fun and addicting time i've had on the xbox so far. Its challenging and fun and evolved in hd is oh so pretty.
I'm gunna go play right now actually. Thanx pms
PMS GibGirl @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
Hey, I got interviewed on short notice, that was the best picture I could dredge up. :)
I'm gonna have to dive back into the game though - I'm suspecting that my score is already out of the top 10. After watching a video of the #1 player, I'm certain I can beat him with a little more practice!
Cella PMS @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
Freakin' sweet! Thanks for the information. GibGirl pwnz0RZ at GW!
PMS GeekesS @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
w00t! Congrats GibGirl on the article! Nicely done and I love the picture :P
Calistah @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
Woohoo! Way to go Gib! Good luck on that #1 spot, I'll be around #300 or so if you need me. ;)
James @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
What's the top ten score at Mutant Storm? I got like 1.2mil playing at Zero Hour.
lyam @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
Kinda cute?
You're on crack. GibGirl is freakin hot!
Gypsyfly PMS @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
I can't believe I've never seen your picture before, you are so cute! Great job on the scores too.
stonelance @ Dec 18th 2005 9:06PM
Woot! I heard you are a pro at this game from Calistah. I haven't got a 360 yet but once I do I will definately try my hand at this game.
raginginfidel @ Dec 23rd 2005 3:50PM
Video of #1 player? where and how?
