Sony to present Playstation 3 at CES in January
According to Playfuls, Sony is expected to show off the PS3 at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES)
in Las Vegas. That would be expected. What's not is the company's enormous 12,000 square feet reserve at the
central event stand. From the article: "[Sony] intends to build a special platform in the middle of the expo, on which
it will be able to properly boast the company's latest products, including the long-awaited Play Station 3."
Kutaragi & Co. sure can promote with the best of them. What are you most looking forward to regarding the
next-gen console?
[Thanks, Nico]

Good, they still have 2 months to scrap the controller. Sony, what are you thinking?!?!?!?!
Alkemist @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
I don't know man. I reserve my final judgement on the controller (good or bad) until i've held it. I heard it was actually quite comfortable.
Fuzz @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
”[Sony] intends to build a special platform in the middle of the expo, on which it will be able to properly boast the company’s latest products, including the long-awaited Play Station 3.”
It will also make an excellent platform to toss the boomerang controller from.

"What are you most looking forward to regarding the next-gen console?"
Playables.
Steven @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
1. Actual price
2. Actual release date
3. Playable games
Kevin D @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Lets hope they actually have some 'real' games for people to test out and play. That would be cool.
Jack @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Well personally I prefer the current dual shock controller, its sony call if they want gamble it with their batman weapon.
Pseudogrey @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Well if you remember this time last year there were a lot of reports that MS would be showing off the 360 at CES. Since that didn't pan out I'm holding off on getting excited about this one.
Chiablo @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Wait... do people actually go to CES?

Sony' doing this at CES becuase they don't want to share the limelight with anyone. If they hold out for E3, they'll be overshadowed by Nintendo. Even if the games aren't playable, they want to make a splash, so they'll do it at CES.
skibble @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Since when has CES ever been about games? Granted, there may be a few playables as a demonstration of the box's capabilities, but CES has always traditionally been all about the hardware.
At least we'll finally get an actual verdict on the controller, in any case.
JRM @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
it makes sense that they'd show the PS3 at CES: THE PS3 IS, FIRST AND FOREMOST, A BLU-RAY PLAYER!!! It doesn't make sense to show off a new TV or refrigerator at E3, same thing applies with the PS3.
I just hope they also put up a golden calf in their platform at the middle of the expo--or better yet, a White Elephant.
Keith Sheehan @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
CES used to be about the games back when it was in Chicago (pre-E3).
XD @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Bottom line....
Sony has made a lot of claims, promises and trash talk! Now is their chance to deliver and backup what they've been preaching! Anything less is enough to make me believe that Sony is pulling another "PS2 = Toy Story in real time, ect." but this time with PS3! I hope they don't dissapoint; I guess we'll see in January!
Mike @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
I want to see some interconnectivity with PSP.
The biggest thing i'm hoping for is that PS3 will act as a LocationFree base station.
Stevo @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Hey. You cannot deny that a controller that, when thrown, will return to you hand would be amazingly cool. No more having to trudge across the room to pick it up again to have your next go.
Look at the controller again. It's actually pretty swish.
Leomar Grullon @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Don't hate on SONY people they did great when they showed off the PSP last year and now big momma is coming home so get ready Billy.
Baby Mario @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Coming from a person who's first two consoles were a Playstation and a PS2, I want to see them make more moves for them to crash and burn.
Batman @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Revolution controller: Looks stupid and uncomfortable, I sure as hell won't get Nintendo.
Sony controller: Looks stupid but I will reserve judgement on it. I mean it's Sony for crying out loud. Since when have they ever done anything wrong?
Mike Garfein @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
CES makes sense for Sony's splash. They are going after more than just a PS3 intro. They're goal is to capture the HDTV market. I wonder if they'll have a prototype HDTV using the cell chip? If they do you could see a TV that displays 9 HDTV channels on screen.
I expect to see TV shows and movies using BLU-RAY, (probably running on a PS3).
White Rose Duelist @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
It does explain a lot about the PS3 controller that batman is a fanboy. Maybe he submitted a Batarang to the development team for use in the prototype.
Lite @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
hahaha,
Will Billy Boy and the Softies have the Xbox 360 debugged by then?
PS3 is gonna run the table again either way.
irateVpirate @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
I too am hoping for the PSP connectivity, and the location free capability. That alone would sell me.
shawn moniz @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
yea i dont know if im getting nintendo's new system, the controller turned me off to it,i mean if i want a remote i will play with my tv and dvd remote :) im not sure if i will spring for the xbox 360 or the ps3...just gonna wait and see what happens with these consoles and what good games come out of it....
mike @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
i hope to see killzone 2 playable and looking likr thet movie from E3 whats the chances??
Andrew Fong @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
@22: Bet'cha PS3 will have even more bugs than the 360. My friend's PS2 has had to be replaced twice (though the second time was conveniently just as the slimline PS2 was being released), but my launch X-Box is still ticking.
Besides, the complexity of programming on the Cell architecture will probably result in a huge number of buggy games early on. What's more, since they're programming bugs, they'll be harder to fix (i.e. you can't get a replacement or suspend your power-supply with string and there's no online service to download patches).
I have to admit, however, that all of my Nintendo machines work fine. My SNES still works like a charm and my NES is still mostly functional.
phez @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
No playable games = instant fail.
Don't let down your fans, Sony.
prooie @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM

bd (formerly b) @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
"@22: Bet'cha PS3 will have even more bugs than the 360. My friend's PS2 has had to be replaced twice "
Translation: My friend's PS2 had to be replaced twice, therefore the majority of PS2s had to be replaced. *sigh*
Better yet: My Launch Xbox works, therefore every Xbox must work.
Even better yet, three of my friends that have Xboxes had to get them repaired, another one was just plain disappointed .
By the way, 900,000 PS2s (out of almost 100 million) were shitty this generation, yet 14 million (if not more) Xboxes were shitty (out of 22 million or so). This time, 10% (if not more) 360s are shitty. At least it is an improvement over the 66% they had last generation, eh?
I only agree with you that Nintendo consoles are the only ones that work as they should do.
I want (don't expect) playable games at CES, and clarification for their retarded online service.
Oh, and at least the PS3 controller looks better than having the same shape as the Xbox-S which is the most uncomfortable controller ever.
Snake @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
This is about 5 weeks away.. can't wait!
matt @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Im looking forward to some actual game footage. That would make me giddy with glee. I mean they should atleast have some gameplay footage from some game by then. And as far as the controller goes anyone who bases whether or not to buy a game system because the controller looks "stupid" is a idiot. Seriously I mean come on how many of you even look at the controller when you are playing. Its like saying... oh I dont want to eat my food on that plate because it isnt a circle its a square and it looks funny ew.
Anyways I thought I heard something about Sony throwing some thing on February about the the PS3. Ill have to look it up again but if thats true im sure we'll see some hands on stuff there. As far as hands on stuff at CES I wouldnt get my hopes up for that. I'd also like to know what Sonys plans are as far as Online stuff. A price wouldnt hurt either :)
Jago @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Batman...I hope you were being sarcastic...
But if you weren't then you are an ignorant and hypocritical ass.

ok sony, bring on the suck
88m8 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Well if the PS3 is as unimpressive as the 360, I definitely won't be buying one.
This "hopping on to the next generation, even though it's the same games, at a slightly higher res" doesn't cut it for me. I want something exciting, or I'm keeping my $500!
james @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
ces(in vegas) used to have a huge gaming section. So huge that they needed to branch off and have their own show. But honestly e3 would be way better if it was in vegas where all the good conventions belong.
I know the dual shock is more precious to some people than their own mothers. but its always felt slapped together to me. this boomerang shock just seems like a way to use the same lousy analog buttons in a new(ugly) chassis and save money. Theyve got to do it somewhere besides no hd and no backwards compatibility right????
Jake @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
I wouldn't expect any playable games at CES. There's almost a 0% chance. This will be all about HD capabilities. They MIGHT release an official price, because that would be a key part of attracting customers that aren't gamers but just want a Blu-Ray player. It's just going to be a hell of a lot of the same trailers we've seen before running in 1080p at 120 fps. ;) Expect playable games at a dedicated Sony event in Japan, as E3 would probably be too late.
Jon @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Well they need to put up or shut up. I want to see playable games and no more freakin pre-rendered bull crap! I hope the press gets to get their hands on their actual controller. More importantly than these points is will they reveal an Online plan to compete with Xbox Live??? If Sony drops the ball on online play again...!!!!
Jago @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
"If Sony drops the ball on online play again...!!!!"
I think Sony has already said that they aren't going to have a centralized online hub like Xbox Live. While I am not the biggest fan of the Xbox (I don't hate tho), Xbox Live has been proven to be a success and should be a model to all console maufacturers.
88m8 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
I'll admit that XboxLive does some nice things... but $50 a year ($60 where I live), shouldn't be the model for the industry.
I sure am glad that Nintendo feels this way as well... I'm enjoying my MarioKart DS Wi-Fi, and I'm glad I don't have to pay for it! Did you see the article about how 45% of the 112,000 North American buyers of MarioKart DS have already taken it online? How many would if it cost $$$ to play online?
Soir @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
"Besides, the complexity of programming on the Cell architecture will probably result in a huge number of buggy games early on."
How in the world would you know this? Are you a developer working on a title for the PS3?
Or is this mere speculation?
"What's more, since they're programming bugs, they'll be harder to fix (i.e. you can't get a replacement or suspend your power-supply with string and there's no online service to download patches)."
I would say wrong on this one.
In the latest edition of PSM coming out (December), they've gotten a hold of some news about the PS3 - some of this may or may not be true so don't belive everything;
They talk about the PS3 being really powerful and basically more powerful than Xbox360. They interviewed a dev. that said the PS3 could actually be more friendly (programming-wise) than the Xbox360 because "People are finding that the [Xbox] 360 has some stupid bottlenecks".
Also it's mentioned that since about a year ago, SONY put together a team to come up with an online network for the PlayStation platform - it was too late for the PS2 since the generation-swtich was already close.
It's also mentioned that, feature-wise, they've practically copied Microsoft's Xbox Live! - and if SONY keeps to their "No cost for Online"-policy we should be seeing a really good competitor against Xbox Live!
EngoP @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
I hope they have playable demos of the games we've seen (DMC, MGS, GT, etc.) and at least some videos for what is yet to come. Lord knows they need it all right now.
Don @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/feature.php?aid=11937
You should read this article that was wriiten after the Toky Game Show. The writer says that the reason why Sony is not showing any playable titles is because the PlayStation 2 is still making Sony alot of money, and they don't want people to lose interest. This is contrary to Microsoft who wants to ditch the Xbox immediately because they will never be able to make any money from it.
Scythe @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
lets just hope that's all true but I can't wait to see some real game play. If it looks as good as they say it will I'm sold. I could careless about the controller I'll adjust like i did from the snes to the n64 to the ps1 & ps2
Just give me sweet game play and i'm all set.
Lansing @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
James: no backwards compatibility
Ummm.... Isn't there backwards compatability all the way back to Playstation one. If there isn't than its news to me, big news. Why hasn't anyone said anything about misinformation like that.
pauze @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
i'll see if the ps3 is shown at CES. if it's not, oh well...i'll just hit up the Vegas porn convention, which is happening the same weekend.
on second thought, who cares about the ps3 when there's a porn convention around?
Kevin D @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
According to Hackaday's link to "AnandTech", the PS3 will most likely NOT do 1080P X 2...LOL (half way down the page)...
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2453&p=10
"One thing is for sure, support for two 1080p outputs in spanning mode (3840 x 1080) on the PS3 is highly unrealistic. At that resolution, the RSX would be required to render over 4 megapixels per frame, without a seriously computation bound game it’s just not going to happen at 60 fps."
Read it and weep kiddies...LOL....
Good article about the 2 machines...
Peace out
Rare Hare @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Lansing: what james was saying was that, in his opinion, the "slapped together" controller was where Sony is shorting us, rather than doing something like leaving out hd support or backwards compatibility.
personally however, i'm excited about the controller. at first, i admit that i was sceptical and that i said the same things you people do about it. but after taking some time to think about it's shape and design, and then seeing a picture of it in GamePro magazine WITH a human hand holding it, i'm excited. it could quite possibly turn out to be the most comfortable controller ever created. i fell in love with it over night, and it's now my desktop wallpaper.
the only thing i wish they would do now is to set the L2 and R2 buttons back a bit (like the pelican PS2 controllers) and give them more room to be pressed, similar to the Xbox triggers. then it might very well be perfect.
this is sweet. can't wait till January.
JD @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
hey kevinD, if I can play UT2004 on my pc at 3840x1200 then 3830x1080 is certainly possible.
thats right, go edit your UT2004 ini file, change the res (if you have dual screens) and away you go...sure it slows down quite a bit, but thats a 128mb FX2000 im using (FX5800 Equivilent)
for an RTS or somthing that might make use of dual screens its certainly possible.
ZeroCorpse @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Yeah... it will be on display right next to the Phantom.
