Cenix, a Korean company that specializes in a range of electronic gadgetry, is looking to take the PSP on in the land of kimchi and StarCraft. Their awkwardly titled gaming unit, the GMP-M6, is a full-featured multimedia device that promises 2D and 3D gameplay right along with audio and video support, just like its Japanese-bred brethren, except in addition it uses MiniSD cards and features an FM tuner. Even better, the gadget will also pack in widescreen display and will allow for 6 hours of video and gaming, and 20 hours of music. The only difference is the GMP-M6 will attempt to deliver all this in a form barely bigger than the Game Boy Micro, and at a price below $200. See it for yourself in these photos.
Of course, they could just be blowing smoke up Sony's stack. The company's claim of 50,000 downloadable game titles sounds awfully like the crowing Infinium Labs made about their troubled Phantom console back in the day (and we all know what's happened with them recently). Also, the GMP-M6 looks like it only has three face buttons (not counting the awkward trio on top) and a rudimentary directional pad; which isn't really a bad set of controls, but surely nowhere near as progressed as the PSP or even the DS. And we haven't even mentioned Sony's years of experience in the business, their steady reputation with gamers worldwide, and the fact that the PSP is a better-known, more widely-supported brand.
Still, it'd be foolish to ignore the potential David versus Goliath showdown that could come about between the two consoles. But what sort of PSP Fanpersons would we be if we didn't root for the big guy?
