DDR Mario Mix potentially discontinued
Everyone's favourite plumber and a dance mat—it was sure to be a hit. Except, inexplicably, the game
DDR Mario Mix appears to have suddenly been
discontinued. Posters on Nintendo's offical forums
and
elsewhere bring word that
problems with the dance mat production have caused Nintendo to withdraw the game—this is backed up by the rising prices
it's fetching on eBay and Amazon.com.
No confirmation from Nintendo yet, but we'll keep you posted. It's surprising that a popular holiday title would be
discontinued without good reason, but it might be only temporary.
[Update: Nintendo have confirmed that this is a false rumour: according to a Nintendo representative, "This is
definitely not true".]

SWEET! I bought one for my nephews, but now I might have to hold out and see what it will sell for. :-)

There was a "Hot Bean Juice" scandal.
Sick Nintendo, just sick.
GlitchCog @ Dec 18th 2005 9:38PM
I bought this game. The up and down spots on my dance pad don't work so well after what most would consider to be very light usage. Somebody told me that the pads just go bad quickly, but maybe it's actually a defect.
I can't say I really like the Mario tie-in. It's silly to the point of lame. I just wanted to try DDR, and all I have is a GameCube.
dslamngu @ Dec 18th 2005 9:38PM
#3 Glitchcog,
$110 for a used slim PS2 is not a big investment. $50 more and you can grab anywhere from 2-5 excellent used games to keep you busy until the Revo comes out. What's the problem then?
Greenboy99 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:38PM
I'm going to agree with #3 [GlitchCog]. I just wanted DDR and only had a Gamecube =] Mario =/= Good
Anyways...mine is already out of the pack and used..but...heh...maybe it'll be a collector's item ;D Or I can sell it and get FE9~
Nicholas @ Dec 18th 2005 9:38PM
Actually, I don't think there's a problem with the up and down going bad. I think the problem is missing them. I had a lot of trouble hitting them at first; everytime, I looked down and my feet weren't anywhere near the up and down arrows.
I have a friend who solved the problems by only using one foot. I just spent some time to learn to put my feet where I thought they were going.

I'll probably pick up a thin PS2 soon for Katamari and DQ8. I should have waited for DDR. I had a PS2 a long long time ago and it ate a bunch of games and DVDs, so I've been wary of going back.
Still, if DDR Mario's discontinued and I can sell it on eBay for a profit, I'm happy.
Karmakin @ Dec 18th 2005 9:38PM
I have DDR:Mario, and have been playing it a lot. The pad seems to be high quality. I've been looking for DDR for a while.
I actually have DDR:E2 for the PS2 and a pad for it, but the rumble chip in my PS2 died, and that powers the pad.
Jago @ Dec 18th 2005 9:38PM
If this is true, they should still sell it and partner up with one of the many other dance pad manufacturers. It probably can't be that hard to use existing pads and just change the circuits and whatever is printed on the pad.
GlitchCog @ Dec 18th 2005 9:38PM
Nicholas:
For me it's not from missing the buttons on the pad. Actually, during the gameplay it works pretty well, although I too took a while to learn to step the right distance and re-align myself in the center. The up and down buttons on my pad have issues on the menus where my weight isn't directly over them. So when you try to scroll through the difficulty levels you have to press much too hard on the up and down arrows to get a response.
Buttonbasher @ Dec 18th 2005 9:38PM
Can't you buy 3rd party pads? I know that this is the first "DDR" to hit the cube, but couldn't you use another pad from another game? Or just because its not Konami DDR, do the other pads not work. My EB has a bunch in stock, so I'm about to go pick it up, and would like to have a backupplan for breakage.
Thanks.
Milton Bradley @ Dec 18th 2005 9:38PM
Yeah, it's probably possible to pick up a third-party pad...that's if it's supported for the Gamecube. You could always use the controller converter to make it plug into the Gamecube.
Sucks to hear this game being discontinued. Although I wished Konami/Nintendo would've done this a long time ago, not at the last minute where the next generation consoles are being introduced just next year. Bad planning I guess.
Bad reviews I heard. I hear the music selection is terrible and repetitive.
Save yourself the money, get a PS2 and buy any of the DDR games(DDRMAX2 is currently my favorite) At least you'll get a decent Konami dance mat to start with and can go for the high-quality metal ones later on.
Schaep @ Dec 18th 2005 9:38PM
GlitchCog,
Read the manual of the game, you have to press the up or down button twice to change the difficulty setting, so your dance mat mat works fine.
