Griefers tried to bring down the entire Second Life Grid by creating self-replicating "spheres" that would fill the environment, prohibit characters from moving, "ultimately incapacitating server after server until the entire Grid goes down."
This wasn't the first time said griefers tried such an attack, but this time Linden Lab, the creators of Second Life, had a strategy: create a virtual "firewall" preventing the attack from spreading. Mark Wallace, who covers Second Life over at Walkerings, makes a distinction between trying to prevent these attacks with code changes, insisting "dedicated griefers will always find a way around any such technological fixes." He maintains the strategy used to halt this attack, policing the world itself, is the only effective strategy.
Anyone ingame when this happened?
