The PS3 controller has arguably been more criticized than Nintendo's
forthcoming Revolution controller despite being more conservative. While its shape
is exaggerated, follow the link to view a gif sequence that outlines the function behind the
"boomerang" or "wheel" design.
Does this change your opinion on the controller?

I know nobody's going to read this, but I'm much relieved that the controller looks functional. Like many others I'm still disappointed that it's effectively the same button layout and still no triggers... But at least it looks functional, which is a huge relief.

I won't say how it feels or works because that would just be stupid, but it is ugly. If they were going to change the control, why not add something that the old one doesn't have? Someone was in the crack room and brought a notebook with them!

Personally, I think it's nice to see a change in the controller design. The dual shock 2 controllers weren't that great either. The two that I had both broke, and seemed like they were made of a really cheap plastic. It's too early to assume how big the new controller really is, and how it feels in your hand. There must be a reason why Sony is using this controller for the PS3.

i really dont understand what some of you are saying. the 360 controller is a total rip off of the dualshock and dualshock 2 and i say this only because i have a ps1 and ps2 and just got my 360 (and very much regret it), not even an hour after i started the system it crashed, but thats not the point the point is they copied dualshock.
but back on topic you cant judge the ps3 controller till you hold it in your hands and play a game that requires fast and precise button presses or movements of the analog sticks.
to judge a controller before even holding it in your hands is not only stupid and childish but just plain ignorent. but anyway back to the 360 for a sec im giving my personal opinion here because i did buy one, im warning you now save your money for something better or more important cause i took mine back the next day and am now saving that money for ps3, the 360 completely killed MS for me, infact i have now stopped using windows as well and switched to linspire.
i now dub the 360 system
SP2 jr. after the discraceful service pack that caused so many peoples computers to crash without any chance of recovery.
and yes i know alot of that was off topic but seriously people sony has been developing electronic hardware for decades and MS is basically a newborn in this area, id say show sony at least a little bit of faith they know what they are doing. besides why even care what the controller looks like? havent you people ever heard of thrid party controllers? you know they do make different designs for the same type of controller.

Who gives a sh1t who copies who? Too many of you people are caught up on that. Controllers should be functional. Period. If someone else has a good idea and another compnay adopts it, who the hell cares? It means that we, the gamers, win.
Also, who cares if Sony keep using the same controller design from generation to generation? That is also just a plain stupid complaint. Aren't most keyboard essentially the same as they have been for many years? Yes, they are. Why? Because they are functional the way they are. Get a clue people.
But that said, I still think Sony needs to switch the D-pad and left analog stick. That has been my biggest gripe with their controllers for a while. The two analog sticks are too close to each other on their current designs and aren't as comfortable to use as the layout used on the Xbox controllers.

The controller of the PS3 looks sweet! It looks futuristic and I like it better then the Xbox 360 both console & controller. It may look like a boomerang but atleast it's unique and fresh looking.

"Sony's "history of excellent industrial design (video game version)":
"Hmm... the last one was black... we shall make ours silver!"
"That rumble pack is selling like hotcakes... we'll call ours Dual Shock!"
"Hmm... That N64 analog stick is actually working... but we'll have two!! (manufacturer's note: Games will only use one of the two analog sticks)"
My take.. I'm pretty historically innovative and groundbreaking myself.. just give me a painting from Picasso and a big photo copier, and I'll give you an "original" masterpiece."
I could say the same thing for Microsoft. Microsoft's controler for the Xbox360, has rumble, two joysticks...
This is the process:
Nintendo makes a cool idea -> Sony innovates and develops that idea, creates a unique approach -> Microsoft copies BOTH, and makes the most money.
That's how I see it.
My personal opinion about the controller is neutral. I like Microsoft, and Sony (I've grown out of my N64) and I own an ipod and a pc. Why do you have to take sides? When you listen to the media, you get influenced. Just go and try it out, if you can't, then don't come to a conclusion!
I haven't tried the 360's controller yet though.
In best buy, this guy was playing the 360, and the framerate was VERY low, like something that doesn't even look like it was moving? I think it must of been lagging or something, so I left to get a stereo which I came for, and then came back and it was still like that. But when it didn't lag, it looked ok! :D

I'll be honest... I'm glad to see that there's mixed reviews out there about it. Though I would recommend at least putting it in your hand and trying it before knocking the fact that it's different. It's not like this is the only controller that's looked like this.
Anyone who's owned and played with an Alps Pad and saw the picture of the PS3 controller went 'SWEET!'. We might be the only ones, but we're probably the only ones that firsthand know how the controller feels to some extent. Bottom line, I got used to the playstation controllers, but everyone still gets claw cramps from playing too long with it. Unless you have the hands of a 6-year-old girl, the controller isn't comfortable. The PS3 controller and the old Alps Pad are made for big american hands, and you'll understand that when you can try it out.

I have seen a picture of this with someone holding the controller and it should be tiny.
