erm, why not just buy a $5 adapter at radio shack which adds a volume knob and mute button?

Why not just use the standard headset or take #1's suggestion? I'm all for tinkering with things, but some task are just downright pointless & stupid. Anybody who would waste their time with such menial tasks needs to find some "companionship", seriously.

You can plug in any cellphone style headset or xbox1 headset to the 360 controller. You loose the hardware mute and volume controls BUT you can control that through software. Just hit the dashboard button on the controller to bring up the sub-menu and from there you can mute and adjust the volume. No soldering required.

The "Xbox 1" headset works fine with the 360, anyway :-)

I think this is a good idea but too permanant. I would have taken some minijack extenders and cut the female end off and soldered those. That way you could switch headsets anytime.

Well I've tried both cellphone earpieces, xbox headset on a wireless and wired controller, and get no sound at all!!

Anything I'm missing?
