Now that you can download all 36 entries to the OMG Cup competition, we thought it'd be appropriate to bring you some highlights from previous years. These entries from the 2003/4 competitions are extremely addictive titles — one of which was made into a commercial game published by Freeverse Interactive. Like most indie game development competitions, these games tend to focus on addictive gameplay. So without further ado - here are four indie games that may cause you to lose several hours of your life. At least you'll lose them having fun!
The first game that deserves a mention is
Kill Dr. Cote, the definition of an arcade shooter
done right. There?s no pretense here: your aim is literally to ?Kill Everything!?. Featuring truckloads of enemies,
guns and gore - this is Serious Sam in 2D. For more polish check out the Freeverse published
Kill
Monty.
Chopper is a pretty decent side-scrolling helicopter shooter: 48 levels of helicopter fun at your fingertips!
Next up: MAFFia. The
title of the game is a reference to the UK Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food?s
response to the foot and mouth crisis of 2001. To quote the game?s creator ? on at least
one occasion there were men with guns firing wildly into fields of
animals, although to be fair it was usually handled a bit more decorously.? In MAFFia the aim is
to shoot as many sheep as possible. Extra points for keeping sheep in the air for long periods of time
and/or
riddling them with as
many bullets as possible.
Last but not least: BugThug. It?s probably a sign of my taste in arcade games that this is the only game on my favorites list that doesn?t feature weapons. If you get into this game you better take plenty of breaks. Otherwise you?re looking at some pretty serious RSI problems. If BugThug was a mainstream game, it?d probably get a health sticker slapped on the box.
If you?ve got any favorites from previous iDevGames or other similar indie game development competitions, feel free to highlight them in the comments thread.
