Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade service won the best of show "Innovator of the Year" award at the Digital Entertainment & Media Excellence Awards. Yeah, we've never heard of them either, but with some big names attached to them like Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter, it certainly beats a sharp stick in the eye. The possibility of digital delivery of content like movies, music, and games seems like its gathering more and more "steam" lately (pun intended).
Can Microsoft do the impossible and create a viable alternative to the brick and mortar retail presence and in so doing, open up the doors for a whole new generation of smaller indie games who don't need the support of major publishers and valuable shelf real-estate? When the new service has only been "live" for a couple weeks now and is already winning awards for innovation, the writing appears to be on the wall.
