I had OOTW and later got Flashback (I think that is what it was called) on my 386. I remember that it even worked on my brother's amber-screen 286. I loved those games.

OOTW was the first adventure game that I ever played through in one sitting. It was so enthralling, and so fun, that I never put the controller down. I played it on my SNES, but I loved it. It was AWESOME storytelling for a 16-bit console's limitations!

We need more like this!

Chris,
This, along with Flashback, are some of my all-time favs. The slick animation and fluidity alone were way ahead of their time.

Whatever happened to Interplay?

He's not "just" the designer. Eric Chahi did everything on the game. Literally. I remember watching the credits roll in the Amiga version and his name was one everything. He was the progammer and designer. He worked on parts of the graphics and sound.

This guy is an anomaly in the annals of game history. He basically invented the modern action/adventure...and he did it basically by himself. It's also eerie that this got posted today. I swear this very afternoon, I was thinking about writing a review of Out of This World on the Amiga. Crazy.

Good to hear that he's still trying to put together his next good idea instead of just cranking out crap *cough*Trip Hawkins*cough*. Hopefully we see something spectacular from him in the near future, and he doesn't end up being the gaming equivalent of James Ensor. (You know, Belgium's famous painter.)

Be sweet to see OOTW and the sequel and Flashback all remade with modern graphics. Perhaps as Xbox Live Arcade titles.

I had this game for the amiga but it was called 'Another World' not 'out of this world' did just the uk get this title, and why?

grat game though and flashback too, this one was more cinematic and with fantastic set pieces, flashback was a much longer game with missions and such, oh and smaller characters.

Twist: Flashback had a 3d sequel called Fade to Black. I played this a little bit (I actually still have the disc around I think), but I don't recall it being that good. Actually, I wasn't a huge fan of the original Flashback either (of course, it was so long ago and I was so young at the time that it's possible I just didn't "get it" or something).

Out of this World was something else altogether. What an amazing game. Unfortunately I was never able to play the sequel. Oshi, is that the Sega CD version you talked about? Is this the only format it came out in? I remember waiting and waiting for some kind of sequel to come out on the SNES, but nothing ever came... and I vaguely remember seeing it come out for some system I didn't have (potentially the Sega CD I guess). Is this available for anything else now?

I still have the PC version of OOTW / AW stored conveniently somewhere on my drive. I should get out Dosbox and give it another whirl :)
Not to endorse illegal activities, but I'm sure this game can be found on numerous 'abandonware' sites? Would be cool to see a psp port of this game...

Yeah "Another World" in the UK. I remember it well, the atmosphere and animation at the time seemed revolutionary. What a game - damn trick in spots too (those leech things were a pain).

Would be great to see new stuff from it's creator/s.

I believe I played OotW on a PC while on a trip to Korea back in '95. I loved the art style and presentation, but hated the frustrating trial-and-error gameplay. Can't say that I got past the first few levels/chapters (if you can call them that). Kudos to those that did.

OUT OF THIS WORLD IS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES EVER!!! I remember playing this on PC for hours and hours. When I first saw the intro for this game I thought graphics couldnt get any better... The music and sound effects were awesome. And this wasnt just some shoot everything in front of you, it took strategy and many deaths to get some things right... I remember it took me forever to get past the part were you rolled though this underground passage way with steam blasts shooting out trying to kill you. Great game, my top 5 of all time

OOTW is fantastic. One of the greats of all time. I have played it on:
•Atari
•Amiga
•Apple IIgs
•Genesis
•SNES
•DOS
•Mac
•Sega CD
•3DO

The 3DO version is quirky because it is the same game but with updated background graphics. The Sega CD version also has the best music (of course). I even ripped it to CD. Each version has its own little quirks.

The sequel, Heart of the Alien, was only on Sega CD and not quite as good. I spent quite a while (before eBay) tracking it down, and as usual, having it was less fun than the hunt. In fact, I believe the Atari version and maybe the Amiga don't have the second to the last level. "Burger" Bill Heinman put it in during the Apple IIgs port, I think.

Flashback was a spirtual successor. It's PS1 sequel Fade to Black (also on PC) was in 3d, but it really sucked. I don't know how much Chahi had to do with it. He did take like five years making Heart of Darkness on PS1. It was good, but not classic like OOTW. There are some other games like OnEscapee that have followed in the same vein, but OOTW is still the fountainhead.

I could go on for hours. I have a fetishistic fasination with this game, Wasteland, and Raiders of the Lost Ark for the Atari 2600.

It did have gameplay reminisant of prince of persia. It was tons of fun.

Blake, it was Delphine not Interplay. Interplay was the publisher for some versions, but I don't think all of them. Here's an unofficial Delphine website:
http://ramal.free.fr/dsi_uk.htm

Did not know: They also made Shaq-Fu. That almost makes me want to pick a copy up.

I still remember the stuff the alien guard said to you when you were still in the cage at the start of the game. "Anuntha...anuntha...uchelah!" And then "thud" as the cage fell on his ass.

Ok, I probably screwed up the spelling of those words that probably don't actually have a spelling.

I played the game on my Amiga. I had no idea it was available for so many other platforms.

I believe the game was supposed to be "Another World" in all markets. But in the US, that is the name of a daytime soap opera. So we got "Out of this World." Same game. :)

WOW! I mentioned this in the whole Ebert cussing Vidgames.

I will be breif this time (sort of), this is an amazing game, its beauty borne out of the limitations of the hardware at the time, but created a visual masterpiece that is timeless, dont need new graphics.

I remeber watching the opening sequence and it has you sinking, I thought that was part of the intro no game. After an exchange and furious waggling of joystick, joy ensued.

Amazing, Killer7 (stulistaically) is the closest. AW simple controls but amazing depth, sound like a Nintendo title to me ;>
