Solid gold Xbox 360 face plate
An anonymous auctioner is selling a solid 24kt gold Xbox 360 face plate on Ebay. The starting bid: A whopping
$36,000. We presume it's the going rate for a gold bar maybe. From the auction: "This is a pure 999.9 solid gold bar
that has been cast into the shape of a functional Xbox 360 face plate. The IR receiver, ports, and buttons are all
functional!"
"I love gooooold!" (spoken in a
Goldmember Dutch accent)
[Thanks, Bryant]

Oh yeah! More money to spend on the 360 for something other than actual games! :P

Bling bling! <-- LOL!

No reserve but starting bid of 36k ha very laughable.
Nushio @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Wow, insurance is only 1 dll!
I wonder what might happen if that item gets 'lost in the mail'.......
Fuzz @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Well, 900g is about $16 000 USD worth of gold. So the guy is looking to more than double his money. Good luck with that.
JCM @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
This is cool...but I wonder if you could get it cast for yourself much cheaper. The starting bid is more than $21,000 higher than the gold is worth (assuming my math is any good).
I say this like I am really interested...I didn't even buy a $20 face plate, I sure as hell am not going to buy a $36,000 one. But still one cool way to pimp up a 360.

Man Fuzz...I've got to learn to recheck the posts when I spend too long typing one. Nice work.
frick @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
wow. that blows the hell out of my wood faceplate
SOAD @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
I'd rather SPRAYPAINT my own....which I'm not going to....
Steve-in @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
I'm pretty sure that it is just spraypaint, I mean who's got enough gold just lying around that they can make an xbox 360 face plate out of it.
Mark @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
I think it would probably be cheaper to create a mold of the 360 faceplate yourself (you can buy hobby kits that can do this for you), then hire a metalsmith to melt and pour gold into the cast. You could use another metal instead -- silver, platinum or copper. If you got the money and time, just do it yourself for the ultimate customized job.
Toast @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
As if there wasn't already enough incentive for someone to steal your 360...
billymo @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
As a jeweler... you'd never want 24kt anyways. You could make indentions with a fingernail, and it would bend like crazy.
Yes, you could get it cast... and I'd recommend 14kt. At least it'll be usable.
Then again, if you can afford one of those, you can afford to keep it under glass.

And yet there are so many people people in the world dying of starvation...

Psh. Gold.
Let me know when someone makes a PLATINUM faceplate.
Can't blame a guy for trying, though. If nobody buys it, he just melts it back down into a bar again.
This will probably end up being the inspiration for one of the upcoming "minor 360 annoyances". No parts made out of precious metals that can be easily stripped, melted down, and resold.
JD @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
the 360 gets so hot it will probably melt
Corey @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
but.......but...........where are the diamonds?

Corey @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
but.......but...........where are the diamonds?
El Chimpo @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Man I want to meet the dude who buys this waste of money so I can slap him. How dumb would you have to be?
skibble @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Corey is right, where are the 360 faceplates chiseled from a single enormous diamond? I'd pay 30, maybe 40 bucks for one of those.
The ZeroCorpse @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
I never buy accessories that cost more than the console. It's just a rule, man.
gamer1 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Maybe Bill Gates would buy one for his Xbox 360 that he probably doesnt play. It could be kind of like a nice trophy of one of the major accomplishments that his company has achieved.
patrick @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Question, when you install the faceplate on the 360 doesen't the tabs have to snape into place? With them being made of gold seems like to me they would not be flexable enough to work. Also this thindg looks like it was painted. Because it isn't shinny like all the other gold "bling" that I have seen.
Joe Petersen @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Does it say anything that the guy's supposedly got solid gold lying around, but has to prop up the faceplate on his circa-1975 dining room table with a drinking glass in order to take a picture? And are those rattan chairs?
billy g @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
if its soilid gold then how the hell is it staying up resting on what looks like an empty glass? its wither fake or gold leaf .
billy g @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
i guess i should have looked at the ebay as its addressd there. oh well. i guess thats what ya get when you post half asleep
sorry
popstand @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
Feels like a hoax to me. The guy sells garage door openers on eBay. Can anyone say "Viral Advertising". Worst case scenario, somebody buys it for the 36 large, and he has to go out and make one for 15 or 16. Meanwhile, free advertising for his amazing garage door opener business. He's also been adding things to the listing that fall into "Methinks thou dost protest too much" category. Particularly the eye-rolling bit about the matching Diablos.
krylon @ Dec 18th 2005 9:02PM
personally i'm wondering how he mounted the plastic bits into cast gold ...
