MTV, eager to shed the perception they have nothing to
offer videogames, brings us another worthwhile read. This
time they talk to Nate Bihldorff, a 31 year old writer for Nintendo
of America responsible for the scripts of over 30 games including the popular Mario & Luigi: Superstar
Saga and the recently released Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. Unable to speak Japanese, he works
with a translator to preserve the story and create new dialogue. In an attempt to turn the funny up to 11, he wrote in
gamer injokes like when "a character implores Mario to
save Princess Peach. 'You will save her, won't you?' he says. 'I assure you she is not in another
castle.'"
Bihldorff concedes that "Villains are always the most fun to write. They always have the best lines." Of course he is referring to lines like Fawful's classic, "Princess Peach's sweet voice will soon be the bread that makes the sandwich of Cackletta's desires! And this battle shall be the delicious mustard on that bread! The mustard of your doom!"
