This is NOT the first consumer electronic device to have a monster-sized power brick! It's not that unusual!

If I recall correctly, Pong had a good sized-brick, as did the original Atari VCS 2600 heavy-sixer (although the brick actually included the prongs that you plugged into the outlet).

My set of Creative Labs Four-Point Surround speakers has a brick that's heavier than the 360 brick, and about the same total size (taller and fatter, but not as long).

The new slimline PS2 has a moderate-sized brick that gets in the way, but nobody has complained about it, yet. For that matter, the PORTABLE Sony PSP has a similar mid-sized brick! In proportion to the actual system's size, the PSP brick is monstrous in size!!!

More potential annoyances from Joystiq:

* Power button doesn't work unless you press it.
* DVD tray doesn't work if discs are shiny-side up.
* Console is not playable while jogging with it strapped to your back.
* Case is too hard to be used as a pillow!
* Color-blind people can't tell if Ring of Light is green or red!
* If you vigorously shake the 360, it stops working!
* No homing ping sounds after losing controller in sofa cushions.
* Memory cards can't be used to stir drinks.
* Downloads aren't instant! The nerve!
* No death ray sent to people who upset you on Live!
* If used as a serving tray, 360 is not resistant to crumbs or liquid.

Etc.

Seriously- Take a hint. This has lost its charm.

I guess they aren't really comparing it to the power supply they should compare it to. We already know that it draws at least 160W of power. How many different voltages/rails does this computer require? From the pins I counted at plug in at least 4, but then I plugged it in quick and didn't count all of the pins. That means they should start pulling out the power supplies on their gaming machines and dunk that puppy in water. I can easily guarantee that an ATX power supply even the ones without fans that maybe can put out 200-300W will out volume it completely, particularly if you include all the cords required.

Anyone even seen an Amiga computer powersupply? That was just as big even the Amiga 1200 powersupply which delivered about 20w to the system, was huge!

This is why I hate blogs - coming off fairly self-important for complaining about the PSU...again.

And this is to say that some people are unfortunate enough to give this site the benefit of the doubt when they come over from, oh, gametab. Every single time it comes off like a nagging puppy wanting attention. Sure, I'm disappointed I wasted my time coming, but then I think of all the times I didn't and it all balances out. Best to stay away balanced out, I say.

Just wanted to say that the Gamecube is NOT 235% larger than the Xbox 360 power adapter. Yes, it's 2,35 times larger, but that means that it's 135% bigger, not 235% as it says in the text. An increase of 100% means it's twice the size of another object.

ZeroCorpse - Agreed. Vic clearly isn't the brightest fellow, he turns consoles over with the disc spinning (try that with the PS2) and complains about where he decided to place the charging cords (if you want them tucked away, tuck them away!).

But at least Vic doesn't think he can eat plastic like Ben. Seriously is there a lot of lead in the water where you guys work? Try the bottled stuff.

The only annoyance that is valid in my eyes is the Windows Media support. But I understand MicroSofts reasoning.

And these data results are royally messed up. They are comparing displacement (powerbrick) to external volume. To get accurate results all of the items need to be measured in the same way. Having an opinion and voicing valid concerns are one thing, but lately this site has garnered the credibility of the Onion.

The ZeroCorpse,
thats funny stuff! I aree 100%!
No wait,
Memory cards can't be used to stir drinks
Why not? As long as the glass is small enough!
This continued PSU bashing is making Joystiq look bad, in my opinion!

As they should.

volume = displacement

I meant to say agree; sorry for all the typos.

Art Guy,
I think you solved the mystery, with your lead tainted water comment!

There is nothing but hate for X360 out there! You'd think X360 caused you mothers to get killed the way people are lashing out!
Calm down people, its actually a decent system, I'm sure the other 2 will be great aswell!

Someone should mod the power supply into a full-blown PC using a Mini-ITX board.

THE SECRET ABOUT THAT BIG PSU
THE SECRET ABOUT THAT BIG PSU
THE SECRET ABOUT THAT BIG PSU

Let me tell you the truth about the size of the PSU, in the begining the xbox 360 design has the PSU inside (if you see images of a disasembled xbox 360 you will see that has enough space for it), all the microsoft enginerers feel good, they could pack all in one small unit.
The problems start when they try the unit, and suffer overheating, this happend a few months ago, the solution (you know microsoft first create and then fix) was to pull out the PSU, since they cant pull out the CPU or ATI card, with no time to fix more design flaws, they make the PSU twice the size normal will be, just like an external CD is more bulky than an internal.
The sorprise come out when after pull out the PSU, they still have overheating, less than where inside, but still happends in some circunstances. But no time to redesign, or fix flaws, because the launch date was inminent. So microsoft release the fix design, and hopes all the buyers has air condition in their rooms, thats why they realese in winter, cold time. For spring and summer, they may recall, or have fixed the overheathing.
Thats why they send you a free-post 2 way for your xbox 360, cause you cant fix it by phone, they need replace your defective design unit, for one fixed one.
