Revolution demo'ed in NYC
MTV's Stephen Totilo has been
on a
roll lately. It continues with his being invited by the
Big N to play the hands-on demos we heard about in September. On the 39th floor of a midtown Manhattan hotel, the
Reginator showed off the goods, but there was also talk of possibilities.
Nintendo's Head of localization Bill Trinen said during the demos,
"I want a Western.
I want to stand there and draw my gun." They also discussed
cooking and fitness games, two-controller, two-fisted
boxing games and "survival-horror games that might have the player using one controller to point a gun and another to
scan the scene as a flashlight."
Since we weren't invited to play with the pretty little thing, we'll have to settle for
make-believe. Oh Revolution controller, how we long to
hold you.
[Thanks, C-Dub]

on the 39th? dpnt you mean 29th or something?
Voidious @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
Why can't you be on a 39th floor?
thettrash @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
That survival horror idea sounds awesome. I am looking forward to this console more than anything else.
cyberfelon @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
The survival horror does sound cool. How will it control, though? With two wands being used, how does the player actually move? If it was on rails it would be easy, but a survival horror on rails wouldn't work (and before anyone says it... no, I don't consider House of the Dead a survival horror).

I honestly can't wait for this thing. I love that stiq has been having more and more posts about it as of late.

ahhhhh! its blocks away!!
so close yet so far

So some games will require two remotes? Then the system should come with two remotes. Wouldn't even cost much more with two in the box.
Galls @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
has anyone else noticed these games are revolving around minimal movement and simple arcade style games?
I man this games so far are amounting to nothing more than arcade games with a light gun.
Wonderflex @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
Does this mean to play a two player boxing game it would require four controlers? I've been wondering about this for a while, because I can imagine duel weilding guns would work this way too. My only question is though, if you are holding two standard controlers, how do you navigate direction? Would it be similar to ASDF on the keyboard, except you use the joypad on the left hand?

"has anyone else noticed these games are revolving around minimal movement and simple arcade style games?

The Controller DOES have a Dpad at the top, where your thumb could comfortably and easily reach. You could easily hold two controllers and move with one of the dpads.
mjp @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
C'mon... while playing the survival horror you could move with the d pad. Have you people even looked at the controller? I don't really see having one as a light and the other as a gun... I see having a light mounted on a gun... and use the numchucks or whatever to move. But think of standing on a wall and tilting the controller to peek around a corner. Think of actually having to keep your hand steady while firing a sniper rifle. Think of pistolwhipping someone up close... This thing has great possibility... I just hope it works as advertised. I'm sure XBWAKS and PMS3 will clone this idea soon enough- and it'll be a great boost for the whole industry.
mocax @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
I want to pilot the APU in Matrix Revolution(s)!
Sean DL @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
Navigating direction wouldn't be super hard. Just a new thing gamers would need to learn to do. moving the controller with the flashlight around to see in the dark while moving in game with the controller with the gun steady and using the buttons on that controller to move around and when needed be you move it aim and shoot(Press B on the back of said controller).
It sounds complicated, but once you play it's very simple.

And I wonder how soon it will be before Nintendo gets sued for repetitive stress fractures or some other injury related to swinging your arms around for hours at a time.
I still think this controller's a bad idea. It's basically the same as the Eye Toy, except that the Eye Toy isn't used for EVERY PS2 game. It's cool sometimes, but can you imagine playing GTA with the Eye Toy?
Mullinator @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
@ZeroCorpse
It is less likely than regular controllers to cause repetitive stress fractures simply because of the fact that you are moving around a lot more. As for swinging your arms around:
"Aiming in "Metroid" could be done without lifting one's elbows from one's lap."

Chance @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
Some of you folks need to reserve judgment until the controller's in your hands. Out of all (yes, ALL) the skeptic journalists who've had a go on the thing, none (as in NONE) have reacted with anything less than marked enthusiasm.
I, for one, have my reservations. But if the thing works as well as described, I'll be a proud Revo owner "sometime" in 2006.
tcc3 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
Im dreaming of swordplay and creative uses for this thing too but the more I hear about it the more it sounds like a souped up Xavix.
http://www.xavix.com/
Has anyone played one of these, perhaps the demo at Radio Shack? Its got specialized motion sensitive controllers too (like a "tennis racket")
In short Xavix sucks: Its a good idea that the tech isnt ready to implement well yet. I pray the Revolution does it much better.
Zaki @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
"With two wands being used, how does the player actually move?"
Why not use those DDR dance pads for movement? They should be used as an oversized WASD keys for that kind of control?
Lith @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
Wow, this is going to bomb SO BADLY!
Goodbye Mario, i will miss thee. *sniff*
At least, until you show up on xbox, HA HA HA HA!!!!

"They also discussed cooking and fitness games"
Sounds like a blast. I'm excited for the bathroom cleaning sim.
kevro @ Dec 18th 2005 9:13PM
"And I wonder how soon it will be before Nintendo gets sued for repetitive stress fractures or some other injury related to swinging your arms around for hours at a time."
Sounds ridiculous, but it's unavoidable with today's "litigation nation". Small price to pay to get millions of gamers off the sofa and into shape. I'm sure there are many people at higher risk of suffering just by wasting away making as little movement as possible.
