Following up on earlier rumors that Peter Jackson approached Guillermo del Toro, part of the Mexican New Wave and fellow monster movie afficionado, to direct the upcoming Halo film, del Toro said, " I'm in talks with them [Universal and Bungie Studios] and Peter, but it's not true that it's on and Hellboy's off." Del Toro makes it clear that Hellboy 2 is a priority saying, "The ideal for me would be to do Hellboy 2 and if Halo doesn't go away, then yeah, I'd love to do both. But it may go to somebody else."
As a fan of Hellboy and Del Toro's previous work (except a few… Mimic anyone?) his selection is inspired. Short of Jackson himself directing the film, Del Toro seems like an obvious substitution. Like Jackson, Del Toro is skilled with using effects, and notably makeup effects, in his movies. And if you've seen The Devil's Backbone, you know that like Jackson's Heavenly Creatures, Del Toro has proven himself a gifted storyteller and not just a monster movie guy. Here's hoping they figure out a way to let him do both 'cause I hear Uwe Boll is free after he finishes up the Slaughterhouse film (that's a joke… I think).
