In the next Steam update, Valve are set to release additions to
the Source engine which include a range of cinematic effects. One way to achieve realism in World War II era games like
Day of Defeat is to make the visuals of the game
look similar to films of that era, and Valve are planning to enhance the Source engine this way.
Bit-tech.net take a look at the various effects that are under development, from depth of field to film grain and motion blur, all of which should make games look more like movies. Employing well-known cinematic techniques is an interesting development, especially welcomed by the machinima community, although the multiplayer aspects of the game will likely remain unaffected. There's a fine balance between eye-candy and being able to play well, and while some of these additions will look and feel good, they may well hinder play enough for some gamers to turn them off altogether.
