Valkyrie Profile returns in 2006

Square Enix and Tri-Ace (Star Ocean, Radiata Stories) have announced plans to release two new Valkyrie Profile games for the PS2 and PSP.
Silmeria (PS2) will be a direct sequel to the original PS1 RPG and will launch sometime in 2006. Lenneth (PSP), on the other hand, is a complete remake of the original game and will contain additional cut scenes and movies to connect the two stories. Lenneth (named after the game's heroine) will be released in Japan on March 2, but no U.S. dates have been announced for either game.
The original Valkyrie Profile was praised for its strong visuals — particularly the portraits and battle effects — as well as its engaging characters. However, the game's handling of "time" and its relation to the entering and exit points on the world map made it confusing for some.
Additional details for the new games will be available when Square Enix launches the official Valkyrie Profile web site on Dec. 12.

A remake of Valkyrie Profile fits the PSP perfectly.
The game battles and dungeons were side-scrolling, and will benefit alot from the widescreen. Also, the whole thing was almost 100% 2D (awesome 2D, I might add), so it can safely run at a lower clock speed to save battery and still keep the original's 60 fps and gorgeous spell effects. As a plus, the music was synthetized and there were virtually no in-game FMV, and with the extra RAM and compression it can cache huge amounts of speech and keep UMD access at minimum.
I wonder if SQUENIX was only waiting for the userbase to widen a bit before doing such obvious move.

Its a good thing for the PSP, being a port or a new game. I'd buy one again if they start releasing good games on it.

oh hell yes. now i don't have to pay $100+ for a copy on ebay. ports = bad, remakes = :D!

That and Crisis Core make two reasons I should get a PSP. Naturally, all the disgruntled PSPwners of today will leave me wiggle room to find myself a second-hand unit when the third reason hits store shelves.

Yes! I never got to try out the original VP, so a remake would be very nice indeed. Oh, and there's a sequel, too. ^_^
By the way...has anybody else noticed how similar the "Valykrie Profile" logo is to the "Final Fantasy" logo? They both use the same font (Onyx, FYI), they both have the same etching-style picture in the background...that's something that struck me years ago, and it's just as true today.
