"Bereft of life, it rests in peace." Gaming television in the
UK has been remarkably quiet ever since the glory days of GamesMaster and Knightmare (which, let's
face it, was a live-action video game). With occasional blips like Bits on mainstream TV, and the odd channel
popping up on satellite to cater for gamers, the torch of gaming TV has been quietly carried along for years. However,
many shows have had low audience numbers and low budgets to match.
Recently, Games Network TV launched a live show integrated with Xbox Live, in which a team competes on air with viewers across the country, albeit on an obscure Sky Digital channel. But what of gaming television in the mainstream? Fortunately, BBC Scotland have come to the rescue, with a new offbeat gaming show called videoGaiden, successor to the online show consoleVania.
The show is hilarious and the presenters are genuinely passionate about games, something which many of the Sky TV offerings fail to capture, so it's definitely worth watching. All six episodes are now available online; here's to a second series!
