Advertising in videogames isn't a new phenomenon. In fact, it's become such big business that companies like Massive Incorporated have been built entirely on the premise of putting updating adverts in games. But gamers can be a traditional, fickle bunch; being goaded into patronizing a product, especially within the almost sacred confines of the game world, can break the fantasy and undermine the entire experience. But what's to stop the onslaught of in-game advertising? Is this issue even worth discussing?Advertising helps out the game publishers and developers by easing the initial monetary investment, so it really could be good for the industry in the long run. But how far are we, the target market, willing to be advertised to? Would you be comfortable with getting product inserts for deodorant in your next copy of Street Riders? How would you feel about a travel website like Orbitz using Myst to plug overseas travel? Metal Gear Acid 2 shilling for Tylenol? The possibilities are endless! (And more than a little disconcerting, actually.)
