Um...just plug in any USB keyboard!!! I plugged in my Logitech Wireless Keyboard receiver and it works great. Mouse won't work, but any old USB keyboard will. Problem solved.

In my opinion one should not need extra hardware to have a functioning console.

As soon as you require PC parts and components, you have got a PC, not a console.

Yes, a USB keyboard works.

But no: a USB keyboard should not be required to avoid this aggravation. It's silly.

Since the revolution uses bluetooth for it's controllers.. i wonder what's the chance you can just pair a bluetooth keyboard with the console.

That would be so so useful, as many of us already have bluetooth keyboards =).

"In my opinion one should not need extra hardware to have a functioning console. "

My 360 is perfectly functional without a USB keyboard. I just use the keyboard when I need to enter alot of text because it makes it EASIER. It's not necessary to make it functional though.

Just because the Xbox 360 works and the text entry system they have in place works does not mean that it's not annoying.

Toaster Annoyance #00001

I bought a really sweet toaster the other day. It is made of stainless steel, and burnished to a very high-gloss finish. However, once I got it home and plugged it in, I found that it doesn't slice my bread and put it inside itself to toast. What a ripoff! I can't believe they would market something like this as something to "make toasting bread easier". There's a rumored bread-slicing and serving attachment coming, but so far it's just been hearsay. I'm almost tempted to take this thing back.

In my opinion, the 360 needs a PSP-like input rather than a full qwerty keyboard. Its far faster to type in stuff with the PSP's phone-like interface.

This whole "I cant enter text as quickly on my console as i can on my PC so it's annoying" thing is akin to "I can't get to Paris as quickly in my car as I can in a plane, so it's annoying."

If all you're going to do is complain then I have this question for you: do you still have the box that it came in?

They need to come up with a "wheel" system for entering text utilizing the Analog pads. Left analog pad upper case and numbers. right analog pad lowercase and symbols. It'd be much faster.

... you guys seem to miss the point of the article... They are lementing the text input for people who dont have/dont want to use a keyboard.

I personally havent managed to snag one yet, but I would be annoyed with a slow text imput system. At least offer to finish my word before I do, or create a better layout for the text input. Ala psp cell phone interface, except assign controller butons to each block of letters or something similar.

It depends how much you've used the original Xbox's text input system. After sending hundreds of textual messages via Halo, I'm a dab hand with it now. The main annoyance was the Passport password entry screen, where everyone in my living room got to see my password as I typed it in.

Well, Jennie's good at using it Vlad, so what's your problem!? GW hasn't gotten those thumbs in shape yet?

Benhc911 has it right. This isn't a console flame, it's a legitimate annoyance. I'll put it another way: why can't I get text into the 360 faster than my cellphone? Is T9 too much to ask?

@ Gareth

I can't get to Paris as quickly in my car as I can in a plane, so it's annoying! Seriously!

Just because its impratical doesn't mean its not annoying.

Try using a wireless keyboard. You can stow it away in a cabinet or something when you aren't using it, and still keep your entertainment center free of wires and other clutter.

It's the same as every other console, with the exception that they let you use a USB keyboard if you need to. So it's actually BETTER than every other console. How often do you actually enter text anyway? After initial signup I've done it... once? Twice? Although I do agree with you about the password security issue.

Joystiq, you have a great site for news and video game blogs, but sometimes you're a little too quick to hop on the bitch boat.

If you guys are so friggin lazy that you can't have a keyboard plugged into your system "cluttering" up your precious area, how did you turn on consoles or live with cords before the wireless controller?

Brandon:

(1) I don't have a USB keyboard. I have a very expensive laptop.

(2) I don't appreciate clutter. Requiring me to keep a keyboard in the living room in order to send text messages is ridiculous, especially when there are many superior text-entry systems. Take a look at text-entry on the PSP or on any cell phone.

I refuse to plug in my USB keyboard but please don't deny me my right to complain about entering text via gamepad. I even want to complain that entering text via gamepad is slower than using the keyboard that I could plug in but refuse to do so. LOL - xbox hater.

I would like to see all the consoles support the text entry used in Beyond Good and Evil. Works great with the analog stick; it was brilliant.

Crabby -- I haven't experienced that, but I KNOW that there are better ways to enter text than what was implemented in XBL.

Monmin: get with the program, man. Just because I criticise a component of the Xbox 360 doesn't mean I hate it. It means that I think it could be even better than it is right now.

Oooh guys he has a "very expensive laptop" and thus for some reason can't drop $4 on a keyboard.

You really shouldn't list complaints which apply to EVERY CONSOLE EVER!

PSP text entry is easy? Ha! They used a virtual cellphone system, making it even slower than 360 texting.

This is just moronic. Do you people recognize the changes to console gaming that are occoring. Yes it is now beneficial to just plug in a keyboard for texting over Live. The fact that you can is a plus...not a negative. T9 is great for cell phones and that's it...I'll gladly take the keyboard thank you! Oh and you can get a mini usb keyboard at Fry's for like $15 or under that is easy to put away. Or you can do like I do and just plug in a wireless logitech keyboard and you can hide the darn thing when not in use.

Wow, between this site and Kotaku you'd think there wasn't anything postive about the 360 at all. It really seems like so many game "journalists" are just looking for the most nit picky things to complain about with the 360. There are some important issues, but this is just crap someone pulle dout of their asses. Text entry with a gamepad has and always will suck and it's no better on my PSP.

Crabby-- I came here to say exactly the same thing. It's like using a iPod scroll wheel to select an mp3 vs. a directional pad. So much faster and easier.

"It should be at least as easy as entering text on the Sony PSP"

...your shitin me right? You actually think it is easy to enter text into the PSP? Well I just have one question for you...WTF have you been smokin? OMG, to think someone actually thinks that the PSP's text system is easy! It has to be the biggest pain in the ass text entry system to have ever been conceived!!

also, yeah, a keyboard works, that is the first thing I tried before even thinking about typing in my name for my profile.
