To be filed under "saw this coming." Following in the footsteps of the ill-fated Chrono Resurrection project, the totally unrelated other attempt to port Chrono Trigger to the PC using a 3D engine fell last May to the very same beast: a cease and desist from Square-Enix. Now they have released a large pack containing concept art, 3D renderings, screenshots and more. If you're one of the apparently large group of people that really wanted to see this RPG classic updated, head over and work yourself up into a teary mess over what could have been. Me? I may just fire up the superlative Chrono Cross one more time.
Update: if interested there is a petition hoping to get permission to do this up legit.
[Thanks, Jonathan]

And wasn't it Square-Enix who filed the C&D letter?

Also, if it is all about money...
I am assuming that these guys were remaking the game for nothing (or very close to it) So wouldn't it make sense for Square to soak them up for peanuts and then turn around and sell their work for millions?

Quite the contrary actually. Square -remade- Final Fantasy I and II(Previously, never released in English) on the GBA titled "Dawn of Souls" with a ton of extras, and lead to great success. They recently (As in, a few days ago), released a remake of Final Fantasy IV (Final Fantasy II to those in the states) for the GBA with a ton of extras as well, and has scored remarkably rave reviews (8.3 on Gamespot is fairly good). So Square, can really remake games.

This project, excellent as it may be, is basically ripping off Square-Enix's IP. They revisit their old IP constantly with the Final Fantasy series, so if there's enough interest Square Enix may consider pushing through the considerable legal problems to think about a remake.
No, seriously, I'm thinking the Chrono series is a dead license. Fan projects would best be served by emulating the Silver Lining team and doing a sequel, set in the same world and sharing similar sensibilities to the two Chrono games, and then getting permission to use the characters from whoever actually owns them. Even if one gets refused, you've still basically got a full game that you can change slightly and actually release.

Nah, they have GBA-esque graphics. They still retain the somewhat chibi feel, with brither colours and obviously, more details than their 8-bit counterparts.

Chrono Symphonic is a project we support, so we're keeping the link up on our site to get it publicity. However, it hasn't launched yet. Stay tuned.

Damn, when was it released... 10+ years ago? and I still have that one song pop into my head every few months... Yearnings of the Wind.
It would kick SO much ass if they would allow a remake or remake it themselves.
