Making a game based on a movie can be easy, although making sure it doesn't suck is another matter. Peter
Jackson's King Kong: the
Official Game of the Movie from Ubisoft got reasonable
reviews, and GameDaily have gone behind the scenes to chat with the makers of the game.
Interesting points covered include the game's use of a custom soundtrack, rather than the movie soundtrack—using the
same soundtrack is easy, and can make the game feel more like the movie, but it can also make it feel unoriginal. As
Kong was intended as a companion to the movie, not a derivative work, the separate soundtracks seem to work here.
The game's producer, creative director and composer also talk about what it's like working with Peter Jackson and
WETA, and the game's replayability, defending the game's short plot by pointing out the amount of action compressed in
the game. There's clearly been a lot of thought put into the adaptation, which makes a nice change.
