I'll restate my comment from Major Nelson's blog:

The first indication of the quality of the “book” should be that it’s self-published, as opposed to being run through a publishing house. There is literally no quality control through self-publishing companies like Lulu. You can self-publish anything as long as you’re willing to shell out the dough for publication. In the real world of publishing, an author doesn’t *pay* to have his book published.

In a lot of ways, self-publishing is a sort of “get-rich-quick scheme.” -sj
