The New Yorker writer Daniel Radosh thought to have actual New York City tour guides take a tour through the virtual streets of True Crime: New York City. Their observations range from surprise ("That's not terrible") to incredulity ("I gotta be honest…. It's been a very long time since I've seen a cab driver that good-looking").
Besides swapping cab drivers, Activision also took a number of other licenses that all seem to involve making the city look worse than it really is. They admit to perpetuating the stereotypes of those who only know New York City from the movies because, frankly, it makes a better setting for a gangster game that way.
In the photo we've put together here, the left-hand side is a photo of Times Square NYC. The right-hand side is the same location in the game. It seems that an entire police station (the low building with the blue sign in the real image) has been removed from existence. Figures.
[Update: Radosh writes in to notify us that the station is actually there, just moved a bit.]
