We loved the idea of finally getting usable fuel cells onto our PSPs sometime in the coming years, so we were no less enamored to hear that a selection of working prototypes might be making their presence known at this year's Consumer Electronics Show. While they're not exactly the batteries we were hoping for, the new fuel cell "power packs" will allow you to keep your gaming device, cellphone, PDA, or rechargable MP3 player topped off, negating the need to plug the device into a wall outlet, possibly for weeks. A spokesperson for Medis, the company behind the power packs, suggested the possibility of up to 80 hours of juice for iPods from a single fuel cell.
At cost, the company says the fuel cells will go for about $8, which will go higher depending on the retailer. They plan on hitting the US market during the second half of 2006 (the "back to school" period, as they say), with a much larger launch scheduled for 2007.
